It's 2:20pm EDT, did I miss the announcement about John, or hasn't it been announced yet? I see the hockey game just started.

I saw most of the hockey game...!!!! and never saw an announcement either. Haven't heard from Lori or John but here is the Golf Digest link announcing John as the winner, http://www.golfdigest.com/. The NBC site had nothing.

Thanks for your support Porch...you were a faithful voter as well as many of the dads!

I saw the game winner. I gave a rather loud "Yeah!!!" when it went in and my DW who was in the shower started screaming my name asking what was wrong.:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

She has instructed me to never to do that again.:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Another one that couldn't be happier ( Well could use way more points) with DVc. We were Mod people and we are now staying for the same yearly cost (Dues and Loan {I know but but it fit for us}) but at the Deluxes now instead.Once the loan is done the real saving will be noticed for us and make it all that much better.

We own at SSr and have stayed there a few times ( really love it) , BCV last year for a week,VeroBeach for 5 nights and have a July 4th trip comeing up for 12 days at BWV and AKV. With the addition of the other resorts and rumor of the other deluxes maybe coming on board it just works real well for us.-

:thanks: for your feedback!!

I guess I have been in the dark when it comes to the DVC. I just really found out about it on my most recent trip (last week). I didn't go on the tour because I couldn't convince DW that we had the time to fit it in our schedule, but I was wondering if the DVC members here could enlighten me on the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY on the DVC?

The Good is you own your own little piece of the magic:smickey: , the bad is it becomes the only thing you think about  (your all ways planning a trip) and the ugly is it ain't cheap.:scared1:

That being said, I wouldn't change a thing. The line I use when explaining to friends is "I have never been so happy to write a check that big".
For us it means our family gets time away from everything. No work, no school, no computers, no responsibilities other than having fun and making memories that last a life time.

I kept our local NBC station on until 7pm here and no announcement was ever made on TV, thanks for the link Bob, I'm going to check that out. :thumbsup2

U.S. Open Challenge Contest
And The Winner Is...
The votes are in! And after a long grueling process our readers have made their choice
By Golf Digest
May 4, 2008
We have a winner, and it wasn't even close.

John Atkinson, an 8-handicapper from Omaha, was the clear choice in an online vote, and he'll join Matt Lauer, Tony Romo and Justin Timberlake in Golf Digest's U.S. Open Challenge at Torrey Pines South Course in June.

Atkinson received 48,756 of the 117,331 votes cast for the five finalists in the first U.S. Open Contest, conducted by Golf Digest, the USGA and NBC Sports. Erik Norton, from Boston, was the runner-up, with 25,948 votes. Ross Troike (20,233) finished third, followed by Matt Rice (14,329) and Phil Dembure (8,065).

"This whole thing has been exciting and overwhelming," said Atkinson, who is battling lung cancer. "The support has been amazing. I think people understood my story and have related to it. I wish I could say I was cancer-free and 100 percent, but I'm not. But that's not going to be the reason I break 100 at Torrey Pines or the reason I don't."

Atkinson, Lauer, Romo and Timberlake will be playing the U.S. Open course at Torrey Pines just a few days before the Open begins in June. They'll play from the same tees, which can stretch the course to more than 7,600 yards, to similar hole locations that players will face in the final round of the U.S. Open. A one-hour broadcast of Golf Digest's U.S. Open Challenge will air on NBC Sports on Sunday June 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. (EDT), in the hour leading into NBC's broadcast of the final round.

We are so excited to share that NBC announced today that John was the winner of the Golf Digest US Open Challenge Contest!! You can go to the Golf Digest website to see the official story. We cannot thank you enough for all of your votes, prayers and support. It is amazing to think that from one original email, almost 50,000 votes were generated for John. We could not have done this without all of you and your networks of family, friends, and co-workers.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime for John and our family. We are planning a vacation to San Diego and are excited to have about 20 people join us to support John. He continues to work at his golf game, taking lessons and receiving lots of advice. John also remains on the clinical study for his lung cancer at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. His recent PET scan showed the cancer active and slightly progressing. We are always hopeful for new studies/treatments and intend to seek a second opinion at a cancer institute in the next few weeks.

On another note, some of you may have received information about a wine tasting event in Omaha. Due to the upcoming Golf Digest commitments, John will be unable to attend this event. The organizer, Jodi Meradith is still planning to host the wine tasting. All proceeds will be donated to the non-profit organization, Lung Cancer Alliance. We feel this is the best organization to increase lung cancer awareness specifically.

John will be on the Today show and the NBC Nightly News in the near future--we will keep you posted on the dates. Also, Golf Digest is doing a story on John in the July issue, which comes out on June 1st. Again, we sincerely appreciate all of your votes, support and prayers. We are fortunate to have so many good people in our lives.

San Diego, here we come!!

John, Lori, Machaela, Andrea & Christopher

Ok...Finally the fellas have DIS Fever! I'm hooked! I have a secret crush on Minnie (since she kissed me last week at WDW). I can't wait until the new Free DVD's come out. I think I can quote the current ones we have.

Ok..Disney Fanatic...you have to take that Steeler footage off of your signature tag...it looks like Fast Willie Parker burning my Bears and getting in the end zone ( how many missed tackles was that? lol).

Just returned from 5 days last week...what an experience! It was a surprise B-Day trip for our DD9. She had a blast (and so did DW and I). It was her first trip and DW and I's first since '96. WOW how things have changed.

COUNT ME IN FELLAS!
  1. :welcome:
  2. I think Minnie has sexy legs  (I'm O.K.)
  3. Not anytime soon on the Steeler Footage
  4. I'm glad you had a nice trip. Post a TR soon.:thumbsup2
My wife is an engineer, and she just shakes her head when I show her the spread sheets I created for mileage, cost and days (broken out into ¼ of days) of what we may do when at the park/FW. On the later I bracket the which parks offer early or late hours and what festivals are going on…..

On my scheduling, usually after 8 or 9 pm is reserved for adult time, beers with fellow campers, late night walks and talks.

I am a WDW dad.
:welcome:

Hey, Would like to join. Along with the many qualifications posted. "I do, or do have, or have done" most of them. Got a couple more I didn't see posted.

1. Have Disney character golf club covers

2. Have helped planned so many Disney vactions for fellow employees in my dept. All of a sudden I am getting phone calls from other department, "Hey are you the guy I need to talk to about planning my Disney Vacation"? 3 people have called in the last 2 weeks. Always willing to help share the magic:banana: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:
:welcome:

First time I saw this thread, and I love it. I was reading the list at the beginning of the thread and was actually getting a bit scared, have I gone too far? NO, not possible with Disney.

My DW was sitting next to me and wondering what I was snickering about, and when I showed her she just shook her head in that "OH more Disney" way.

So I am officially requesting membership in the Dad's Club

Your in!

:happytv: <----- Me looking at old video shot at the "World!"

Ok, my turn to chime in - stayed at home today feelin' sick, so I have lots o' time in front of screen - and there's nothing on TV that I want to watch so I'd rather be reading and posting :rotfl:

We are both coast people - going to both DL and WDW every year since we are originally from CA and love going to WDW - honeymooned there, and have been back annually since 2002 or 3 - I honestly don't remember, a couple of years were actually twice. Plus I have been more times than the family, since I end up in FL on business 2-3x per year and always tack on a day or two for WDW. We haven't taken any extended family with us in the past to WDW, but have the opportunity now, should that ever actually come up.

Pre-DD, we would stay at the values or off-site, but then we moved up to the mods, and stayed in one Deluxe as a fam. They were all nice, but cramped as the kids have gotten bigger. DW and I are both a little larger, and just don't enjoy sleeping in a double bed, so we tend to end up in separate beds with a kid - which just isn't all that exciting. The space availalbe in a 1 br villa was very, very appealing to us - no doubt the 2 br and of course the grand villas. I grew up in a family that went to the mountains every yr for vacation and "camped" in 2 br cabins - we were roughing it without any tv reception or telephone. I know, I know - but those were my parents. DW's family always went to Yosemite and camped in a tent. She was used to cramped family trips - I wasn't. So it took a few years of convincing for my DW to finally come around to agreeing to DVC.

For us, it really came down to the following factors that we knew could and would improve the overall vacation experience for us.

  1. The thought of a king size bed and we could actually be together on vacation instead of with a kicking munckin was/is ideal.
  2. Getting the kids to bed at one time, and being able to stay up and talk or whatever husbands and wives do away from their kids (i.e. not having to sit in a cramped bathroom with the door shut so that the room wouldn't be too light so they could fall asleep - or pull the chairs out onto the porch area).
  3. Having much more space just to move around - not tripping over someone or a piece of furniture as you try to get to another section of the room.
  4. Eating breakfast in the room - this is huge for us - we do it almost every day, with the exception of an occasional character breakfast or two, we tend to eat in. Now we can do more than just a bowl of cereal. Now we can do dinner in too, on those non-park days when we want to hang around the resort. We won't do it all the time, but it's become a new option for us, and DW is actually looking forward to it on our next trip.
  5. Having a washer and dryer is huge for my DW. Every trip she ends up doing laundry part way through - now she doesn't have to pack all those quarters. Our trip to POR last year cost over $10 just in laundry.
  6. Being able to visit each year - and mix up where we stay (not limited anymore due to family size) and knowing that the accomodations are already taken care of. This is huge for us. Also being able to mix it up and go to DL the same way - once they open GCV.
  7. The opportunity to visit other Disney destinations around the world - the point trade out might be a bit high, but those trips would be worth it as well, since we wouldn't be paying cash for that part of it all.
  8. Staying in non-DVC resorts doesn't (except as I stated right above doesn't really matter to us...my FIL has 12 timeshares, and we get a week from him every year whereever we want, so I wouldn't waste our valuable DVC points on trading out - those trades are just too expensive, in my mind - plus they would take away from a Disney experience each year! :sad2:
  9. Being able to mix-it up further, and through in some time at Vero or HHI appeals to both DW and me - a Disney experience, just of a different sort. Some friends of ours own at both BWV and Vero and absolutely love it - both resorts, they love being able to do the beach on every trip as well as WDW.

We took the tour and really enjoyed it last Sep. We did it on Tues and left for home on Sat. I was so wanting to join before we left FL, but DW wasn't ready. So I didn't push. We talked about it for months afterward. I was in FL on business in Jan and took it again. She still wasn't ready - but my mid-Feb she was, so I called my guide and started the process. The money of course is a lot. Writing that down payment check was hard for DW - but once we finally did it - it was no big deal anymore.

Once we decided, and told the kids - and they realized that we would be able to go back every year (nevermind that we'd been doing that already) they got so excited. Then both sons began pouring over the Dream Book, and watching the DVC DVD daily - and are quite psyched about our first trip "home" this Oct. We're doing a split stay at BWV and AKV and none of us can wait!

Count me in, another Dad signing in.

Please sign me up too!!

another disney dad here-consider me a new member, I fit most of the criteria!!

Guilty as charged for WAY too many of those! :rotfl: Sign me up.

Gorsh fellers, I'm honored to be a part of the club!

I'd like to join the club too if it's not too late! Glad to see so many other Disney Dads out there...this is great. Thanks.

I want in...I stopped reading the criteria at #1 because it applied to me, so I figure at least 99.9999932% of the rest apply as well!!!!

DIS Dad's own!!!!

I'm in. :cool1: My wife says that I am just a big kid when it comes to Disney. I can relate to more than a few of the criteria. I guess once you get the Magic, you are hooked!

Hi guys! Count me in! I've always been a Disney fan....but I got HOOKED when I went on my first trip as a "Disney Dad".

:cool1: Count me in, Can't start the day without checking the DIS Boards in the morning

Can I join too? I have an almost-three-year old, and I've taken her to WDW four times already. I joined DVC for her. OK, for me... but that's what I tell myself!

Each of you have been officially added to the DIS Dad's Club List

Hey...Where is Emma's Dad? Is he MIA? If anybody catches up with him tell him that we are going to cut his pay in half if he doesn't get the DDC list caught up! :lmao: We might have to send DisneyFed and his colleagues looking for him.::cop:

LOL! Sorry I kept everyone hanging over the last week. I was busy down in WDW with the family... DD's very first WDW visit :goodvibes I am going to have to do a TR (I wasn't planning on doing one).

I must admit... I have been putting off getting back here because I knew it was going to make me miss WDW even more. I was totally not ready to leave on Saturday. While we were still at the resort, my DD looked up at me with her big, brown, I-really-want-this-Daddy eyes and said "Can we stay for another 10 years?" I forgot how hard it is to cry and laugh at the same time :lmao: :sad1:

It's good to be back with all the dads!

Oh... and while I'm still thinking about it... I recruited at least 20 people who now think of the monorail as Old Band-Aid :thumbsup2 Even DD now says "look, Daddy! It's pink Old Band-Aid!" :rotfl:
