we are going over to the mk on the 1st late afternoon. not really going to ride anything. we just want to go over, see if they have any special 40th stuff and just hang out and watch the people. just something else we can check off the list.

This is kind of a redneck thing, but since Barry knows a thing or 2 about cattle I thought I'd post this here since we really don't have a topic anyway.

I had a customer come in here a few minutes ago and tell me his son went to a club calf (beef show cattle) auction last night. A steer calf sold for $33,000!

Winning is apparently just too important to some people. I don't care how many big shows you win, there's no way you make that money back from a steer. Maybe a heifer or a bull if you get a lot of good offspring... but wow.

Don , I can tell you for sure I wouldn't be doining either one, since my fear of hieghts is based on the falling down factor Since TOT I can't see it coming I'm fine, I'm also OK with roller coasters since it's on a track

When I was 5 I slid down a tree 20ft up, I was pretty messed up and since then and to this day I won't even clean my gutters on a 1 story house

This is also why I won't fly to WDW

I had to come up with every exuse in the book why we couldn't go on the Asto-Orbiter when my son wanted to go on it

$33,000! For a steer calf!?! It's not uncommon at the Wisconsin State Fair for the Grand Champion Steer to go for something like that that, but the buyer gets three things out of that: 1. Ego Trip. 2. Advertising for their business. 3. A Tax write off.
That's crazy....

Yeah. This is just the individual buying a steer, to show, for a chance to just have a shot at winning... and then they'd have to hope a bidder pays some crazy cash. If all things go perfectly well for them, the MIGHT break even. I guess if they translate tax laws very loosely, they could make it a tax write off on a farm loss. I don't have that kind of money to lose though. If I did, I'd definitely be a DVC owner.

If I'm going to spend anything more than a few hundred bucks on any calf, it had better either be a good quality bull or heifer that will produce something... not a steer that is good for feeding, showing for a season and then making some really overpriced steaks.

I used to show steers when I was in 4-H. Other kids in the club and other clubs that I talked to would pay upwards of $1000 for their calves. Once you figure in all the feed, vet care, etc, they could easily have $2000-$3000 or more invested in the animal. The Grand Champion at our county fair would usually sell in the neighborhood of $5-6000, but it dropped off sharply after that to $2500 range. So these kids (and their parents) would lose a good chunk of money every year. They were always surly and very serious about everything.

My brother and I would get to pick from any of the bull calves born on the farm, feed them out of the regular farm feed and pocket whatever money the animal brought at auction a pure profit. Guess who always have more fun at the fair?

One year, I actually had the Reserve Grand Champion Steer Carcass at the fair. You should have seen how PO'd all these guys that showed Angus and Herfords were that they lost to a Holstien!

(For you non-farmers, Angus and Herford are considered "beef" cattle. The produce higher quality meat, but you wouldn't want to milk them. Holstiens are "Dairy" cattle. High quality milk, but generally not good for beef.)
