I used to show steers when I was in 4-H. Other kids in the club and other clubs that I talked to would pay upwards of $1000 for their calves. Once you figure in all the feed, vet care, etc, they could easily have $2000-$3000 or more invested in the animal. The Grand Champion at our county fair would usually sell in the neighborhood of $5-6000, but it dropped off sharply after that to $2500 range. So these kids (and their parents) would lose a good chunk of money every year. They were always surly and very serious about everything.

My brother and I would get to pick from any of the bull calves born on the farm, feed them out of the regular farm feed and pocket whatever money the animal brought at auction a pure profit. Guess who always have more fun at the fair?:thumbsup2

One year, I actually had the Reserve Grand Champion Steer Carcass at the fair. You should have seen how PO'd all these guys that showed Angus and Herfords were that they lost to a Holstien!

(For you non-farmers, Angus and Herford are considered "beef" cattle. The produce higher quality meat, but you wouldn't want to milk them. Holstiens are "Dairy" cattle. High quality milk, but generally not good for beef.)

Yeah... that's exactly how things work at our fair too. Even the winners have more wrapped up in the steer than they get back. I just don't get it. At least this year, the steer that won was a locally bred and raised steer that was shown by the family that bred it. I always like seeing that happen.

You and your brother had the right idea for how to do it. Those are the ones that actually make money at the county fair auction and can still teach kids how the actual business side of things work...

Morning guys. Anyone up for some waffles?

Well....I am getting hungry.

Blargh!

This is turning into a completely Peanut Butter-n-Beverly week at work. Just gotta plow through it. There's a light at the end of that tunnel (and if it's a train, it's on it's way to Frontierland, so that's OK).

Building "Ghost" images for a new PC type...every time I go to start with a new OS it says "To boot from CD/DVD press any key..."

So does anyone know where the "any" key is at...I can't find it.

:lmao:

I’ve been lobbying to have this one added, but upper-managment just dosen’t seem to think it such a good idea…

Sorry you are having a bad week but do you really expect sympathy from us considering you will be at WDW soon? Have the world's smalest violin out playing for you.

Seriously, suck it up and say continuously, "I am going to be out of here soon. I am going to be out of here soon. I an going to be out of here soon..."

Have a great time.

A sad day at the Duck household today. We had to put our friend and pet of 14 years, Jack, to sleep. His health was drastically getting worse. The girls seem to be ok, but I am struggling with it. Before we had them, there was Jack.

I know how tough putting down a pet could be.

Sorry to hear that...

I am in Mammoth Cave, KY filling in for coworker doing an ethics training. Mammoth Cave has no 3G, thanks to Harbeson, and that old musty cabin smell. But, it is beautiful. There are turkey, deer, and bats (at night) everywhere. You can tour the caves, and 5 mile down road towards Cave City, they have more amusement stuff - dinosaur land, go carts, mini golf, and a zipline. This place has really grown since I was last here and will have to bring family next year. Time to had back to no 3G land. Later.

Sorry for your loss Dave. I know it's tough.

When I married my wife and she moved into my house...we soon discovered she had allergies to my 6 year old Golden Retriever. Even though I had my dog first, I had to give him up! Darn it!

So on top of losing him to another home - 2 years later - he succumbed to cancer.

I felt like I lost him twice.

So now, on top of my wife's allergies, I don't think I could ever have another dog.
