Oh man...we had one of those "I want to be at Disney and Not Here" moments last night. HAd a tornado pass about a mile from our house, we were on the road as it was coming at us. Ended up taking shelter at the Firehouse about 6 blocks from our house.

Brutaly scary experience, you see, in 2006 we had a tornado take our house with us in the basement. This was almost an exact replay of the previous encounter...except we weren't sitting at home. DD remembers the experience photographicly.

Boys, we (Me, DW, DD(6) and DS(3) rushed into the firehouse in front of a whole wad of firemen watching the storm and went and hid in a bathroom hallway. They looked at us like we were insane...About 60 seconds later, we were surrounded by 10 firemen who were saying "Ok...there is a monster out there. Then the lights went out...My wife and daughter started crying...me and the boy just held onto each other. The firemen were trying to figure out how to get to their clothes so they could start a rescue mission...(This was even more mentaly jarring than the storm at this point) The storm rages outside for about 20 minutes and then the firedudes head off and suit up. We just sit there in the emergency lights.

It missed us by a mile...tore the heck out of some corn fields.

Don't know if my poor old heart can take much more of that. I do know that making my daughter talk about her favorite place in disneyworld calmed her (and us) down tremendously.

Glad everyone is OK, and I agree with Commando - excellent job keeping your head on and keeping the family calm. We had quite a few twisters come near the farm growing up, but none ever hit us.

Hey, if it makes you feel any better, DW and I were doing our long-term vacation planning this afternoon. We're thinking of a two week long summer road trip in a few years - and I've routed one of the legs through Kansas City. You available to show us some good KC BBQ in, say, the summer of 2013?

Saturday DW and DD went to a spa (DW had a birthday gift certificate) and then school shopping. I took DS and had a manly day. Racquetball and Basketball at the gym, then on to the National Model RailRoad Convention in Milwaukee. 39,000 square feet of displays. These guys put a lot of work into these set ups! We finished up the day at a local fishing hole. Watched some pan fish totally ignore our bait, but it was a cool experience anyway.

I have friend who's mom lives south of the cheese curtain (in Illinois) She was getting my friend's husband a set of Bucky Badger head covers for his golf clubs. She had to ask my friend "What is this thing, a skunk?"

Weekend was nice and hot. Spent a couple of hours at the pool yesterday and of course I got a bit of a burn on my shoulders. (Darn Irish skin)

As for college football, Go Wildcats - Northwestern that is.

Explodo, that's some scary stuff. A tornado hit near here a couple of years ago. You can still see the random line it took through the area. Some businesses destroyed, the ones next door are OK. Just bizarre.

I have been trying hard to see if there's anyway I could get down there for my birthday at the beginning of October - but no. But mid-October, that might be possible... hmmm. Maybe, just maybe I could sneak in an extra visit this fall...

...doubtful really, but I can sure try and try now can't I?!? I'm constantly looking at "possibilities" for getting down to FL or out to CA.

Suuuuuuuuure. I know what's really going on.

Absolutely - name the date (let me know far enough in advance, and I can usually even get hearings moved). How much time are you planning to devote to KC BBQ? I don't know any BBQ places that are open for breakfast, but if we need to cover more restaurants than we've got time to get to, we can always have your family over to the house, and we can just bring the "Tour de KC BBQ" to us.

Having graduated from a traditional basketball school, college football season was mostly just something to distract me for a few weeks until Midnight Madness in October. But I've appreciated the resurgence of University of Kansas football - and I'm looking forward to this season under a new head coach. I really like the Turner Gill hire.
