Oh man...we had one of those "I want to be at Disney and Not Here" moments last night. HAd a tornado pass about a mile from our house, we were on the road as it was coming at us. Ended up taking shelter at the Firehouse about 6 blocks from our house.

Brutaly scary experience, you see, in 2006 we had a tornado take our house with us in the basement. This was almost an exact replay of the previous encounter...except we weren't sitting at home. DD remembers the experience photographicly.

Boys, we (Me, DW, DD(6) and DS(3) rushed into the firehouse in front of a whole wad of firemen watching the storm and went and hid in a bathroom hallway. They looked at us like we were insane...About 60 seconds later, we were surrounded by 10 firemen who were saying "Ok...there is a monster out there. Then the lights went out...My wife and daughter started crying...me and the boy just held onto each other. The firemen were trying to figure out how to get to their clothes so they could start a rescue mission...(This was even more mentaly jarring than the storm at this point) The storm rages outside for about 20 minutes and then the firedudes head off and suit up. We just sit there in the emergency lights.

It missed us by a mile...tore the heck out of some corn fields.

Don't know if my poor old heart can take much more of that. I do know that making my daughter talk about her favorite place in disneyworld calmed her (and us) down tremendously.

Thank ya Mr. Mouse.

What a terrifying experience!!!! I sure am glad that you are fine!!!! Hope the kids are doing ok from the scare of it all!!:scared1:

Sorry to hear you had to go through that again. Glad you and your family came through it. I can't imagine what you went through. Smart thinking to start talking about Walt Disney World. Glad you are safe. :)

On a happier note my DW and oldest DS made it safely to Washington DC this morning. Flight was smooth. They are walking the Mall and than heading to Air and Space. Nice for them to bond and have a nice Mother and Son experience. :cool1::cool1: I am home with the other three. Daddy has to make their day fun as well. Wish me luck. :)

wow! glad to hear you guys ok. we had one not to far away from us but nothing like the storms you get. we have alot of mountains around us and they dont realy get a chance to get started. i remember the tornado shelters when i would go to minni for work. what a helpless feeling. glad to hear your ok!!:thumbsup2

That's terrifying Explodo! Glad to hear you and your family are alright!

It reminds me that I use Disney to distract frequently at work. I work in a pediatric ICU, and deal with frightened children daily. Talking about their favorite ride in Disney, or their favorite Disney Fairy, or the latest Phineas & Ferb is an amazing way to calm the kids (and their parents!)

There is nothing like that feeling of being completely out of control of a situation...I mean Add to that as the Dad(or mom) you can't allow fear to show...it trasmits to the kids in a nanosecond. So in my case...You sit there like a poker player...Emotionaly it's draining. At least the disney stories allow everyone to talk about happy things.

Glad you are all safe. Here we worry about Hurricanes but at least we get days of warning before they come on shore. Good idea on the Disney stories.

WOW! :scared1:
I'm glad we don't get them around here very often! For some reason, I used to have nightmares about twisters coming through the neighborhood I grew up in here in Easton. I've never even seen a real one, other than a "water spout" when I was on Guam, so I don't know how those nightmares started. I hope I never do see a real one! Glad to hear you are all safe! :)

WOW. :scared1: So glad everyone is okay. Very sorry about the last one too. What a situation to be in. I guess like it must be like if your house were to burn down. I can totally see though why the fear is there, since you've definitely experienced it before. Very glad you guys were all ok this time.

Glad you're OK. I've lived in the heart of tornado alley for most of my life. In fact, one of my earliest memories is of playing outside with my best friend after my 4th birthday party. We were playing with my new birthday present toys in the front yard, and looked up to see a funnel cloud coming our way! :scared1:

Luckily, it took a turn before it got to my house. Tornado watches and warnings are just sort of par for the course around here. Unfortunately, they're so common that too many people ignore them when they shouldn't. But there's a reason my media room is in my basement. If we're going to have to be down there, we may as well be entertained. popcorn::

That was one heck of a storm last nigth Wasn't it, thought for sure we were going to get in on the tornado action too. It was sighted in the cities on either side of us. just got lucky i guess.

i was a little stupid out talking to the neighbors until lightning hit a block or so away.

Glad everyone was safe and ok.

Where are you in MN?

Man, how'd you do that?! I check travelocity every day and can't seem to get a fare under $189. I need it to get below $150 for my credit card rewards to pay for it. So far- no luck.:guilty:

Detroit was a NorthWest hub and now there are a lot of Delta flights from here. Spirit also flies from here and I probably could get a cheaper flight on Spirit but by the time you add in all the fees it would probably cost more.

Hey Chill,

We're there the 17-24th...:thumbsup2

Port Orleans Riverside

Sounds like I will get to have my second Dis Dads meet at the Magic Kingdom. I'm looking forward to it.:thumbsup2

I wanna go too!

I have been trying hard to see if there's anyway I could get down there for my birthday at the beginning of October - but no. But mid-October, that might be possible... hmmm. Maybe, just maybe I could :tiptoe: sneak in an extra visit this fall...

...doubtful really, but I can sure try and try now can't I?!? I'm constantly looking at "possibilities" for getting down to FL or out to CA.

"Where are you in MN?"

In Rogers...the unofficial Tornado Capital of Minnesota:sad1:

Explodo: glad to hear that you are all safe. That's quite the ordeal that your family has been through both times.

I have only ever been involved in near misses with Tornadoes. Heavy storms but the path of the tornado both times was about 10 miles away.

Darn, you figured it out :rotfl:

Seriously - I've been looking at 2-6, really wanting to spend my birthday either in the World or the Land... but DW has put the kibosh on that saying that we can't be away from home for my birthday this year. Whatever. I'm not taking it as any kind of anything being planned though... :rolleyes1 We'll see. I'm not holding my breath.

I'd really like to be there and to meet ya in person AJ... but I can't this time around. But that doesn't mean I can't get away for a couple of days later in the month. :cool2: Maybe. Perhaps. Possibly. :confused3
