On another note, I'll be heading down close to your way in late August. DW and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary in early August, so we decided to take the family on a road trip to celebrate. During our two drives down to WDW, we were really impressed with the scenery in Kentucky and Tennessee, despite it being mostly dark when we drove through! We're spending a few days in Louisville, then down to Mammoth Cave and Bowling Green for a day. There's also a train museum that offers rides in New Haven that we're going to check out. Do you get over to those parts much? Can you recommend any good eatin' places or other things we should see?
Congrats. DW and I celebrate our 10th anniversary in September. It's Disney scary
It has been 15 years since I lived in Louisville, and that was a lot of beer and brain cells ago. So, here's what I recommend:
Others mentionned the Louisville Slugger Museum and baseball stadium
Churchill Downs - not sure if they are racing, but you can take a behind the scenes tour to Millionaire's row and the track itself
Belle of Louisville - Cruise the Ohio on an actual Steamboat
Cheaper or free stuff:
Louisville Galleria and 4th steet live - Big mall and outdoor music/ party - ok for kids when the sun is out
Science Musuem and Zoo (Zoo has lions and elephants)
Belvedere (downtown)- riverfront and fountains
Dining
Brown Hotel - creator of the Hot Brown - the original hot, open face sandwich that many claim and duplicate
Sealbach - Fine dining - really expensive - may not want to try
Joe's Crab Shack - chain restaurant but good food
Mammoth Cave is really cool. When you get to Bowling Green, you can also tour the Corvette Musuem. They have BeachBend there as well (not sure if open then), that really is a collection of carnival rides and their waterpark is a pool with a water slide. I would avoid Beach Bend. There is also Holiday World and Splashin Safari located in Santa Claus, IN, about 2 hours west of Louisville and a 3 or 4 hour detour to Bowling Green. It is a nice theme park about 30 minutes North of me, but it is fun. It is some nice roller coasters and terrific water park. When in Bowling Green, Mariah's Restaurant downtown is really good and has been a landmark in Bowling Green. If you are looking for a hotel in Bowling Green, go to the Drury Inn. They have cheap rates, pool, free hot breakfast, free dinner appetizers, and $.50 alcohol drinks.
I'll have to get back to you on Louisville dining. I will ask some friends who still live there.
