The DIS Book Club Discussion Group: Round 4 - Wild Ride!

I'll be posting the schedule sometime this week. I wanted to give more time for everyone to get their copy of the novel first. :)

I picked up a copy at the library today - looking forward to reading and discussing!

I have read every book along w/u, but I don't no how 2 get in the discussions about them. GREAT book choices by the way. I've been putting them on my kindle. (than Kevin).

Hi DisneyWurldLover!

A fellow DISer from the Jerzy Shore, eh? :)

Join in the discussions by just posting any thoughts that pop into your head while you are reading. From time to time, I'll post discussion questions to help the conversation move along. Feel free to respond to those or share other ideas you have about the book.

While everyone is getting their copy of the novel, I thought I'd get the discussion going for those who were ready to begin. I will be posting a reading schedule shortly to help guide your reading. In the meantime, consider responding to the questions (or just one of them) below...

Based on the cover of this novel, what do you think it is going to be like? Have you ever read a book by Crusie or Mayer before? How is this book "timely" for us now that summer is approaching? Is visiting an amusement park or carnival a tradition in your household?

I actually just finished this book! After I finished House Rules, I went on and read Wild Ride because it sounded fun from the survey info. I kind of wish I had waited for summer (I'm a teacher still in school up to 6/25) or even for my Disney vacation. It did feel like a vacation book, light and wacky. I don't want to give anthing away - but be ready for something really diferent. I enjoyed it and can't wait to hear what others think.

Just got notice it is on hold for me at the library. :) I hope to go pick it up tomorrow!! Yay!!

I went to the library and discovered that this book has 10 holds on it! I didn't bother putting a hold on it because by the time I got it, everyone here will be done reading it. :sad2: I had no idea it was so popular! I don't want to buy it on Kindle because the cost is beyond my price point.

I figured because it wasn't a new new release, I'd be able to pick it up at the store easily, but it seems to be sold out everywhere around here. Fortunately Amazon wanted to sell it to me for half price, and I wanted to buy it from them. So it should be here soon.

I've never read Crusie or Mayer before, so I don't really have any expectations here. The cover image and description both gave me a sense of paranormal whodunit (the moon, the raven), and the setting in the amusement park sounded interesting - creepy sideshow instead of a creepy forest; that kinda thing. Looking forward to it. :)

I had started reading the book, and I'm not inclined to go any further than the first chapter. They lost me at scary clowns. :sad2:

I just picked mine up at the library. I'll probably start this weekend once I finish reading The Passage.

Thank you for doing this! I now have a really good reason to read something other than technical journals! Though, if as a group we ever want to read a really tasty technical work of non-fiction, I'm sure I can make recommendations! ;-)

Snagged a copy of "Wild Ride" for my Kindle. Started reading it, and immediately wondered what I'd gotten myself into. Certainly not the sort of thing I'd read anytime recently. Now I'm starting Chapter 10, and I'm hooked! I was actually hooked by about page 10, regardless, I'm certainly enjoying "the ride." It has a certain Stephen King feel to it, and I like it. Had it been set in Maine instead of Ohio, it pretty much would be an early Stephen King novel--so far! ;-)

Based on the cover of this novel, what do you think it is going to be like?
A haunted roller coaster.
Have you ever read a book by Crusie or Mayer before?
No.
How is this book "timely" for us now that summer is approaching?
Definitely a beach read, but it would be more "timely" as summer wanes and Halloween approaches.
Is visiting an amusement park or carnival a tradition in your household?
Nope. Can't stand them. I'm a Disney Girl, and despite what most people think, WDW is neither.

Another newbie here. I love Jennifer Cruise books and just ordered on my Kindle. Guess I'll start reading tonight!

Should be here tomorrow! AND I just finished House Rules. (Did anyone else feel like THEY had Asperger's after reading that?)

This is my first book by Crusie/Mayer - definitely looks mysterious and exhilarating based on the cover! My family never really did "amusement parks" growing up. It was Disney or nothing!! (MANY years of nothing. :rotfl:)

My copy is waiting for me at the library--woot woot! But now I have to finish "The Help," which I finally got from the library last week--popular book! But it seems like a quick read so I should be into "Wild Ride" in no time!

I know how you feel! I signed on for the first book in this book club, "The Help" and was hold 150 (or something like that). I just got it last week, but finished it in less than 2 days (thanks to a darned summer flu!). Not to go back or anything, but what an amazing story (thanks Kevin)!

Never read anything by Crusie or Mayer before, but I've read nearly everything Stephen King has written and the "Twilight" series, and this seems like it might be a combination of the two. As for amusement parks, obviously, DL and WDW, but they're in a totally different league. I avoid traveling carnivals and fairs like the plague--any ride that is routinely set up and taken apart in a few hours creeps me out.

But my dd recently turned 13 and for her birthday I took her and a group of her friends to a local amusement park (www.oakspark.com). It's small, and features more classic carnival rides like the scrambler, the spider, the round-up and a merry-go-round dating back to 1912. Oaks Park is one of the oldest, continuously-operated amusement parks in the country, recently celebrating its 105th birthday. It actually sounds a little like what the amusement park Dreamland from "Wild Ride" might have once been like, before it closed down and the Untouchables set up residence.

Looking forward to getting started!

That does sound pretty cool. I agree that it sounds a bit like Dreamland. Have you all looked at the map of it yet?
