I'm so glad that the food all worked out! That was a really stressful thing for you! Thank heaven other people stepped up to the plate.

Speaking of camping food, at our annual family reunion, we are going to have a Dutch Oven cook-off. Do you ever cook in Dutch Ovens? We're looking for some new recipes. We always seem to do the same thing: chicken in one oven, potatoes in another and a chocolate cherry cobbler in a third. I've been looking at some web sites, but thought I'd ask here as you all seem to have answers to everything. So, anyone who's got a real killer Dutch oven dinner, let me know!

Here are a couple we've made at Girl Scout trainings I've attended that were delicious.

Apfel Kuchen (German Apple Cake)
Serves 6-8

bottom layer
2 cups bisquick
2 T sugar
2/3 c water or milk
1 egg

3-4 apples, peeled, cored & sliced

Struesel layer
1/3 c Bisquick
1/3 c brown sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
3 T margarine

Line a dutch oven with heavy duty foil. Mix the 1st 4 ingredients and spread in the dutch oven. Place apples on top of bisquick mix. Mix together struesel ingredients until crumbly. Sprinkle on top of apples. Cover. Place on charcoal, bake 30-40 minutes.

Hawaiian Dump Cake

Grease a large Dutch oven, bottom and sides. Then spread ingredients, as is one at a time, in the dutch oven.

1 can (1#5oz) cherry pie filling
1 can (1#4 oz) crushed pineapple
1 box yellow or white cake mix
1/2 c chopped nuts
1/2 c coconut
1-2 sticks margarine sliced thin to cover top layer

Cover and bake on coals approximately 45 minutes.

Caramel Apple Cobbler

8 c. pared and sliced apples
3/4 c Kraft caramel topping
1 T flour
3/4 c coconut of chopped nuts
1/4 c sugar
10 oz pkg Hungry Jack refrigerator biscuits
3 T squeeze margarine

Combine apples, caramel topping & flour. Spoon onto ungreased foil lined dutch oven. Cover & cook about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine coconut & sugar. Seperate dough into 10 biscuits; cut each biscuit into 4 pieces. Dip each biscuit in margarine, roll in coconut mixture. Arrange biscuit pieces on top of hot apples. Bake about 35-40 minutes longer or until biscuits are golden brown.

It's been awhile since I've made these but they are in our councils Outdoor Cooking - Girl Scout style cookbook. They are the tried and true recipes of the trainers from our council over the years.

Vicki and Paula-

Thank you both so much for making me feel loved. If one of you sent me a PM this afternoon the other sent one at the exact same time!! :rotfl2:

Of course I am a bit behind at work, but it's my own darn fault as you all didn't make me respond!! :teeth:

What is your choc/cherry cobbler reciple?? We also camp alot and I would love to have that recipe. I even have a dutch oven but never thought about using it for camping.

Lynn

It's so easy!

Line your dutch oven with heavy duty foil. Pam it well. Dump in one chocolate cake mix, and a can of cherry pie filling. Dot the top with a stick of butter and pour a can of lemon/lime soda over the top. Bake until done. I'm not sure how long, we test every 20 minutes or so. Just remember to evenly distribute coals on the top and bottom of the dutch oven.

I have a killer chocolate pudding cake recipe for the duthc oven. Chris has proclaimed it his favorite cake of all time. It is very chocolatey and served warm straight from the crock pot (as we call it here). I'd be happy to share.

Deb

ETA: I got the recipe off the camping forum on the DIS. There used to be a thread with all kinds of crock pot recipes. If I get time later I'll do a search.

Glynis mentioned coals so I am assuming that her Dutch oven is different than a crock pot. None the less if anyone wants the recipe I will post it later.

Hey all! We've had a really busy weekend, but I thought I'd stop and say hello!

It was nice to read of your mother's day celebrations... hope everyone had a pleasant day yesterday!

I'm off to my sister's softball game, have a good night!

I'd love the recipe. I can adapt any crock pot recipe for a dutch oven, so pass those recipes along!

I would love the crock pot recipe. We are talking about putting one in our camper. We are taking our first trip this week-end. Woohoo!!! Chuck's brother and SIL are going to meet us at a campground part way between us.

This is a dutch oven. You put hot coals under it and on the lid when you cook.

Dutchoven.jpg

ETA: That is the lid under the dutch oven! :rotfl:

I love Dutch Oven cooking. I love making lasagna, chili, chicken and dumplins, coke and chicken and dump cakes. Basically I am very much dump in and cook no recipes. I'll see if I can come up with basic guesstimates for amounts and post them later.

Basically any recipe can be adapted to a Dutch Oven. Here is a picture of a Dutch oven in action

Does anyone use ebay and paypal a lot - someone posted on the budget board today that if you try this new service -they will put $20 in your paypal account - I signed up for it this afternoon - placed a bid using the service and within an hour had $20 in my paypal account - AND I lost the auction - so you don't even have to win it!!

Some people are saying that they even found one with a reserve price and put in a low amount so they wouldn't win it - I just found an item I wouldn't mind winning - particularly with an extra $20!!

The site is unwiredbuyer.com - you can go sign up or if someone refers you by email then the person who referred gets $5 ;)

Here is the crock pot recipe for the Chocolate Pudding Cake

Crock Pot Chocolate Pudding Cake
1 box devil’s food cake mix
1 pkg. chocolate pudding mix (Instant Type)
4 eggs (large)
¾ cup Vegetable Oil
16 oz. Sour Cream
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup water
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix up the cake and pudding mixes, eggs, oil, sour cream and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Add the water and beat with an electric mixer on low for about 30 seconds. Scrape the sides down and then beat again at medium speed for about 2 minutes. Add the chocolate chips, folding them in.

Spray the crock pot with Pam and pour in the batter. Place the cover on the cooker and cook until it is puffed up in the middle and starts to pull away from the sides. Cooking times are: 6 ½ to 7 hours on low setting or about 3 ½ hours on high. Serve the cake warm from the cooker.

I just made it Friday for our camping trip and it was truly moist and delicious.

The girls bought the book Love You Forever for their dad. I know the story is about a mom and son but they thought it was applicable for dad & daughter as well.

Beautiful and sad all at the same time. So true as well!!!!! I sure go through more kleenex now that I've joined the DDA!

Hi Guys-
Hope you are all having a good day and enjoyed your weekend! Im getting ready to watch deal or no deal and grays anatomy--i am so addicted to grays anatomy this season!! anyone else?

I also had an idea for a present for my brother's birthday and I wanted to see if anyone had any creative ways to do this. In the past few weeks, I have been talking about how our friend Alyssa has died.. I have about 4 or 5 really good pictures of her and my brother that i think he would love to have..I was talking to my mom and I was thinkingabout making a bigger picture frame with these pictures, but something as the background..I dont know if i should just buy some nice paper to put behind the pictures ..or if there is something else i could do.
She has a favorite band who dedicated a song to her, so i could always put a lyric or two on there...

any ideas?

Yes, but for the games you have to do the hands. He can't squeeze them tight enough because of the CP (low tone). He's been crying about it. Any suggestions? He loves the Mickey Says game. BTW, how much is a PM? And no, you don't need to see 1 or 2 for MI3. Just drool over TC. He may be a wack, but he is yummy to look at!

Denise, have you tried putting Mickey on his back on a table and having Rees press Mickey's hands with the heel of his hand instead of squeezing with his fingers? That might work.
