Risky Business, Top Gun, Back to the Future, the Outsiders, Flashdance, Trading Places, Red Dawn, Return of the Jedi, Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Indiana Jones, Footloose, DH's alltime fave A Christmas Story, Terminator, St Elmos Fire, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Ferris Beuller, Dirty Dancing, Lost Boys, Fatal Attraction... and those are just a few of the awesome movies that I saw during my four years in HS (83-87). The 80's were the BEST!!!!!!!!

Did you know that Footloose was filmed about 30 minutes away from my house? I had several friends that were used as extras in the movie. We used to go to dances in the "mill" all the time in high school.

Morning, everyone. Yes, it is early and I haven't had any sleep. Quit DISing, and 30 minutes later BK was up. Then Rees... then Davis... then BK again... Now they're asleep and I'm wide awake. So, I figured I'd DIS again.

Oh, and the fact that I'm having an absolute panic attack over changing to Sept and the kids missing 5 days of school is NOT helping... I really am freaking out. Should I switch it back to December so they don't miss any school? Geez, I'm so wishy washy. I wish someone else could make these decisions.

Ooh, an old Humphrey Bogart movie just came on TV. At least I have something to watch now.

Denise,
Just relax everything will work out. You have said you are going in September, go in September. The kids will be ok and your will have a great trip.

Try and get some sleep yourself. You need it or you will end up really sick and then you won't be able to take care of your kids.

Sending :wizard: and :grouphug: to all of you.

Becky

ATTENTION LURKERS

I am officially inviting you to jump in RIGHT NOW!!!! I have heard it is hard to decide when to start posting so I am giving you the chance - you love us - you know you do - so jump on in! We would LOVE to hear from you!!!!

Yes, the more, the merrier!!!!! Come on in, the water's fine! I've only been here a couple of months myself and they treat me like family. (Oops, that might not be a good thing so I should say, they treat me BETTER than family).

Sorry I missed the 80's posting party..I was down for the count a 9pm. Got my son's sinus infection & soar throat..ugh..I hate being sick.

I graduated HS in 1986 & college in 92. This year is our 20 year HS reunion! Can't believe it's been 20 years since HS & I don't know if I even want to go or not. DH doesn't..he & I were in HS school together.

Denise, Go in September!!! They will not be missing out in Kindergarten! I took mine out "off peak" times & it was great..now that my oldest will be in 5th grade this fall the party is over! I have to go in the summer or school breaks now so thats why we are going the very last week of August (they go back in Ny after Labor Day) I am glad we went to Disney so many times off season because it made the trips so much more enjoyable. Don't stress!
Hope he's feeling better soon! :wizard:

Congratulations Glynis!

Now I'm all caught up!

I had 187 new email messages this morning. 95% of them were notifications from this thread :lmao:

What part? I don't have a Cajun accent...I'm more hick sounding. My friends used to call me Ellie Mae (let's see who gets that reference ;) )

I got it! I love the Beverly Hilbillies!

I got a flyer in the mail yesterday. My 10 year class reunion. :scared1: It included a list of people the class president is still looking for to mail info too...boy those names brought back tons of memories.

My 25th was two summers ago. We didn't have a reunion though. The high school has started to have an all-class reunion every couple of years and those are much better because you see the people who graduated around you. I only had 35 in my graduating class. I went to a school with all grades in one school. The closest school to us was 30 miles away. We moved there when I was 1/2 way through eigth grade. I had lived in Brighton until then. My Brighton eigth grade class had more students than the entire K-12 at Engadine. It was definitely a culture shock. Brighton is about 30 miles out of Detroit.

I used to have a list of where everyone lives...can't remember what I did with it.

Hi, all. I'm up and dying on 3 hours sleep. Kids have doc appts at 2:30pm. Hope we get some good meds. Thanks for the advice on Sept vs Dec. I have re-booked the Dec trip and have it as back-up. I am really struggling with pulling them out. It'll be better for Rees because low crowds, but he doesn't do well if he misses his 'schedule' and I'm afraid he's going to have a really hard time jumping back in the next week. In Dec we'd get home and still have 11 days of vacation for us all to rest (you know how you need a vacation from Disney afterwards). So, I really am torn. And if we go in Dec I could do 8 nights to make it a little less rushed. My stomach is in knots over this. I'm such a "goody two shoes" in real life that breaking the rules is really hard for me, and their school system is one of "those" that fines you, takes you to court, and sends home nasty letters. I'm really pitiful, aren't I? Anyone have a backbone they could loan me?

Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

That is the best movie ever. Just to see Patrick Swayze shirtless. Yum!

I loved being able to get the DVD for this. When I'm feeling blue, I pop that movie in and go to the last couple of scenes where he walks in, says that, and they do the dance. I LOVE that last dance scene.

I also love the "C'mere Lover Boy" scene.

DVD is great because if you don't have time to watch the whole movie, you can easily get to the parts you want to watch.

I have that spreadsheet someone sent to anyone who wanted it a month or so ago. Haven't kept it up with the new faces though. I keep meaning to but have more fun reading & posting.

I was married in 89, so does that make me really old :(

Denise, if it's going to cause you that much anxiety then it's not worth it. In the big scheme of life I don't think they'll miss that much, but you have to consider Rees and I wasn't thinking about it being difficult for him if you go in September. When will you know who his teacher is? Sometimes they're more understanding than the school system and maybe she/he could give you advice.
I do understand, though. I don't think Christopher's new school would look favorably on us if we took him out (he'll be in K too). I think they get 5 days no questions asked, though. We're going Mardi Gras week so he doesn't have to miss school. So...when you get some of that backbone, pass some to me.

Has anyone seen My Life yet? Someone mentioned their favorite movie scenes and the carnival scene from My Life popped into my mind!

UP: I'd rather have an all school type of reunion like your school does. I didn't have many friends in my class, they were all older than me. Still debating on if I should send the RSVP as yes or no yet.
Don't we all love how high school has such an effect on us???

I am sorry you are so stressed out!! I wish I could give you advice...I think it's one of those situations where you will kepp second guessing yourself. This is so hard for me to to relate to.....I truly have difficulty comprehending that a school system has the right to mandate to the extent that they are...

this is only my 2 cents...as I told you before my Christopher has some special need issues, was extremely routine oriented etc....I have ALWAYS taken the kids out at least 5-7 days per year for a family trip. They have NEVER suffered academically or socially. And fell back into routine without any problems. I guess it boils down to this: what is best for your family -vs- how much BS you want to deal with from the school. I don't think anyone would blame you for not wanting to deal with the school. You don't think they would have any flexibilty when you have a special needs child? Seems harsh.

You can only do what you feel right about! I totally understand. I am EXACTLY the same way. If a sign reads, don't walk across the lawn, I don't walk across the lawn even though there is a well-tred path with no grass from everyone else doing it. You need to step back and look at what you think is best for the kids though. Weigh the pros & cons about the kids and how they'll handle it (don't consider the school issue at this point). It sounds like there is more to you reconsidering than the school being upset. I may have read more into it but it sounds like you are worrying about Rees jumping back in after the Sept. trip. This is a very real issue and one you need to look at closely.

Becky has always been one that needs to follow a routine. She only has a reading comprehension disorder but schedules have been what kept her on track. I would never have considered taking her out of school for a trip when she was younger for this reason. She was so bad she needed to know who was picking her up, what car they would be driving, exactly where they would park, and exactly what time she could depend on them being there. If Dad was picking her up in the car and I showed up, it totally threw her. We have taken her out the last three years, but she has learned to handle her stress (by getting all of her assignments as far in advance as possible and doing them before and during vacation). This year, it took her a week to get some assignments turned in and she was very stressed (though the teachers were fine because she is such a conscientious student). The only reason it took so long is some of the teachers didn't have the assignments ready before we left.

Sit down and seriously look at the pros & cons for the kids. Take out the what is the better time of the year, what will the school think, etc. You know your kids the best. So far, you have:

December

Pros
Time to recoup before going back to school
Rees won't have to jump right back in

Cons
No free dining (oops, that isn't about the kids)

September

Pros

Cons
Rees will have to jump back in
Kids will miss a week of school (probably not too bad)j

ETA: Sorry didn't mean for it to sound like a lecture. Just wanted you to look at it for the kids and see if that helps you make an easier decision that you can live with.
