The Darlings Caved Already! A Sept. '12 PTR -- Sept. 26 - TR link posted!

Before I begin, can I just say that my husband is begging me to go back to Disney World this year? Begging. Do you have any idea how hard it is to say "we can't!" to something I want more than anything?

(...anyone want to review/change their guess as to when we cave? :rotfl:)

Let’s talk resorts!

The single guarantee here is that we will be staying onsite. In 2010 we stayed at a Clarion Inn for 5 days and then switched to Pop Century for 10 because the Clarion had free shuttle service to Sea World, Discovery Cove and Universal Studios, all of which we planned to visit. So we did all that stuff at the beginning of the trip (rather than pay for taxis/busses from Pop) and then switch to Pop and do all Disney for the rest. We both swore we wouldn’t do that again! For us personally, it was just not a good fit. We don’t rent a car when we travel so we relied on the shuttle service which was so restrictive and not always accurate (times and pick up locations changed on the fly!) The hotel wasn’t very nice and the beds were uncomfortable, and the staff unfortunately unfriendly.

So Disney it is! :thumbsup2

With that explained, onto the choices!

Value: I’m fairly cheap. Ok, ok, I’m incredibly cheap. I don’t like to spend money and when I do, I don’t like to spend more than I have to. That’s why we’ve always stayed in the value resorts. In 2007, on my family trip, our TA recommended Pop Century for a number of reasons and we loved it so much that I’ve just kept going back. For me, a resort has always been simply a place to sleep and shower. I like to spend all my time in the parks, so springing for a higher priced resort simply didn’t make sense. If we decide to go all value, we’ll definitely be staying at Pop Century again. We know it and love it and have no desire to see any of the other value resorts.

Moderate: We are seriously considering a first moderate stay. We talked about it a lot and figured that we’ve been there a few times now, and maybe we would enjoy spending time at the resort this trip. I took an afternoon doing serious research into the mods as if we were definitely staying at one. Of course I read good and bad about each one, but the resort that pulled me in was the Caribbean Beach Resort. It’s really beautiful and somehow feels to me like what a vacation should feel like. I can’t explain it, it just calls to me. So if we went with a moderate, CBR is a strong possibility.

Deluxe: We definitely can’t afford to do a 10 day all deluxe stay, but we are entertaining the idea of a split stay, first 8 or 9 days at Pop Century and then 1 or 2 at Animal Kingdom Lodge. No contest, if I’m going deluxe, I’m going to AKL! It’s always been my dream to stay here, so if I could, even for just one night, I think I will.

With these options in mind, I did some very early pricing to get an idea of where we stand.

(2012 pricing, no discounts)

Resort:.........................Price per night (November):...............Price per night (January):
Pop Century..................$100 (standard room)........................$89 (standard room)
Caribbean Beach............$169 (standard room)........................$159 (standard room)
Animal Kingdom Lodge.....$305 (standard room & view)..............$269 (standard room & view)

So we have a few options that we are considering, including some split stays.

Assuming a 10 day vacation…

  • 10 nights at Pop Century -- $1000 (Nov.)/$890 (Jan.)
  • 5 nights at Pop Century/5 nights at Caribbean Beach -- $1345 (Nov.)/$1240 (Jan.)
  • 9 nights at Pop Century/1 night at AKL -- $1205 (Nov.)/$1066 (Jan.)
  • 8 nights at Pop Century/2 nights at AKL -- $1410 (Nov.)/$1242 (Jan.)
  • 10 nights at Caribbean Beach -- $1690 (Nov.)/$1590 (Jan.)

I’m having lots of mixed feelings about what to do here. My cheapskate side says to look at the prices, my luxury loving side says to think of how enjoyable the other resorts might be, my simple side says "switching would be aggravating", my husband is no help because he wants to just stay 10 days at AKL! I hate being the strict budgeter in the family with no one to tell me no!

What do you guys think?

Ughh. Decisions. Decisions. That's exactlty why I bought DVC. I really had a hard time paying the deluxe prices, even with a discount.

Do you belong to AAA (or the canadian version)? There is always a slight room discount even when there is no other promotion going on.

So - here's what I think I would do:

5 nights POP/ 5 nights CBR

or

7 nights Pop / 3 nights AKL. It's hard to stay at a resort for just two nights because you really only have that one full day that makes you feel really there. I know its not one of your options, but that's what I think you should do if you really want to do AKL.

I just have to tell you that AKL is one of my absolute favorite resorts. I love the theme. I love the pools. I love the music. I love all the restaurants. I really don't think you can go wrong with AKL. I can't wait to stay there again (I actually stayed in Kidani when it first opened).

Since you love POP I don't think you should spend your whole time at a mod. Definitely do a split stay.

Good luck with your decision!

I'm exactly like you in the fact that I don't spend much time at the resorts, so I always go with value choices. However, staying at a moderate or deluxe would be fun to try. You never know how you feel about them until you give it a chance....

I think I'd go with a moderate for the first time, only because I'd be afraid once I stayed in a deluxe, a mod would always be compared to AKL in the future. If that makes sense...:confused3

Sorry to hear about Sheeka - hope the surgery goes well

Haha at Johnny wanting to return this year - I say go for it and while your at it book yourselves in a moderate/deluxe lol. You stayed at Pop last time so it'll be nice to stay somewhere different on your next trip. Looking forward to hearing where you decide in the end. Have a great weekend hun! :)

We aren't CAA members, at least I don't think. Johnny sometimes signs up for things and doesn't tell me if it's not something I'd be interested in. :rotfl:
I see what you're saying about needing three nights at AKL.
The 10-day mod stay, after some talks, has been officially crossed off our list. I agree with you, I like Pop!

It does make sense. If I went deluxe I might never see a mod! :rotfl:

Thanks Tanz, I hope her surgery goes well too. Can't lie, I'm nervous.
He's begging. Like... almost on his knees begging to go back. I hate being the practical budget thinker. I'm about ready to cave...

I predict you are going to cave! :rotfl: There are too many enablers (like myself ;)) on the DIS boards. If you don't want to cave you are going to have to give up the DIS! :rolleyes1

I won't be much help for resort. I've only stayed at Sports or Fort Wilderness Campground. We are similar to you in that we are cheap and have a hard time justifying spending more money for a resort when we know that we will be spending most of our time in the parks. That being said I really want to check out a Deluxe resort eventually.

:lmao: You all are no help! Just kidding of course. It's hard saying no when every fibre of me wants to go.

I wouldn't mind checking out a deluxe for a few days, but I just can see myself taking some type of fit over spending so much money, lmao.

Signing on! Love the early PTR... I think you will cave as well, but I think you will be strong and hold off until next fall!

Hello everyone!

Today I want to tell you about a series of events in my life recently. Settle in, grab a mug of your favourite beverage, slip a little something in it too (it's after 6pm here!) and prepare. It might take a while.

My aunt and two cousins have booked a trip to WDW. I am so very happy for them! Amy, my closest cousin and dear friend, was there once but her mother and brother have never been. Sept. 13 - 22 are their dates. I am also properly jealous. What kind of Disney lover would I be if I weren't?

I got an email last Thursday about "Last minute travel deals!" from Maritime Travel (TA agency I use). I normally toss them right in the garbage because they're all for trips in Cuba or the Dominican or Mexico, and although I'm sure they're lovely trips, they're just not for me.

This one... I opened it. I was bored. I was getting ready for work. I don't know what prompted me. I opened it.

Sure enough it was all the things I thought but the prices looked amazing! $400 to D.R. out of Halifax! Flights incl. and all inclusive for 7 nights! I text Johnny. We text back and forth all day. We were so close to actually going. When he got home we sat down and really crunched the numbers. After taxes and fees the trip was $776 per person. Leaving March 29. I started getting excited! Hopped on my TripAdvisor app on the iPad and started looking at reviews.

They sucked.

At that resort anyway. Every review had people being seriously ill to the point of many being hospitalized!

We lost interest.

I started thinking. Here we were ready to shell out about $1,552 for a trip we didn't particularly want, within a time period of less than two weeks. How cheap could we do Disney if we really tried?

Hopped on the desktop. This was serious stuff. I priced September for value season, Pop Century, standard room, standard vieew, free dining plan, 7 nights, 6 day park hopper and what do I get?

$1,568

Allow me to point out to those with limited memories or math skills (also, just let me do it for dramatic effect) that is only $16 more than the D.R. trip we didn't want one quarter as much as we want Disney! And that's not a last minute deal, that's any (value) time!

I looked at Johnny and he grinned, he could see me starting to crack.

Me: "That doesn't include flights though"
J: "We have enough AirMiles"
Me: "Taxes."

(math things)

Me: "$395.10 for taxes on the AirMiles flights."

J: "Yes, but we have 6 months to save for it

...

We did some more figuring but by this time we were in full trip planning mode. A few more extras (pay to upgrade meal plan: roughly $130, insurance: $180, Johnny is dying to do the Richard Petty driving again: $249 with experienced driver coupon) and we were up to just over $2,500. That's a bit more now isn't it? But again Johnny brought up that we have so much longer to save.

Here's the kicker.

Johnny has an option through work to set aside money from each pay in a savings account. He puts aside $100 per week. Friday that's being emptied for Sheeka's knee surgery (dog hurt her knee for anyone who didn't see that). Guess how many weeks until we would be going.

27.

That's $2,700 by the time we go. Meant to be?

Of course that's not taking into account whatever I can save, the money we've already got saved, etc.

You might be asking, "How are you planning this with your trip to Germany right around the corner?"
I asked myself the same thing. I had to justify it and here's how I did it.

Johnny and I don't drink alcohol at all ever. We just hate the stuff. So while our friends are out spending $50 - $100 every weekend at bars, we stay home. We don't smoke either, another big savings. We don't go out much to clubs, concerts, sports games, we don't shop much and we just don't spend frivolous money. Why can't we spend some of our money where we REALLY want to?

On a scale of 1 - 10 I want to go to Germany about a 5. I mostly want to visit my friend. I want to go to Disney a 10. We should be living for ourselves, not for others. If we have to put off Germany from next spring to next fall, fine by me!

We could go with my cousin Amy and her family! It would be so much fun to meet up for meals or afternoons in the park!

But... didn't we want to go to a moderate resort? Or a split stay? We can't afford it this year. And we wanted to to in November instead of September. Again, we can't afford it.

Yes... but that's when we were thinking 2015... So many people do a cheap trip down south every year, why can't this be our cheap south trip? We can continue to plan an awesome trip for 2015!

Only one thing is tying us up. I need to find a new job -- one where I actually get shifts. So I'm on the hunt and I've decided not to be picky. I have no idea what I want to be when I... well... "grow up" hahaha so I'm just going to get something temporary until I make up my mind.

With that said, the word is almost official. If I get a job, the name of this PTR changes and we're going in September!!

That would be fantastic if you got to go in September!!!! :cool1::woohoo:

That's right around the corner in comparision to 2015. :rotfl:
I really hope it works out for you guys. And I know what you mean about the whole saving money bit. Alex and I have a single drink about once every six weeks, but other than that we really don't spend money on the weekends. (We call ourselves "the old couple" around friends.)

And I like the idea of taking a small trip while still saving up for a big moderate or deluxe-stay vacation. :thumbsup2

OMG! I so KNEW you were going to cave! :cool1:

I am so excited for you! The only thing I wish is that you were going at the same time I was, but you can't have everything. The free dining IS totally a pull. It's really hard to pass that up!

So you need a job - Have you considered being a travel agent? Don't laugh. I'm serious. There are a lot of DISers who do it and work from home on their computer. I am seriously thinking about doing it part time after my youngest son leaves for college. It definitely has its perks, like wonderful discounts. And you love Disney so much -you would be perfect at it.

Here's one thing I've learned about traveling. I have NEVER, EVER regretted any trip I have ever taken. I've never come home and said, "Boy I shouldn't have spent that money". But the two trips I passed up on (One to Greece and one to Vancouver) I have continued to regret to this day.

Can you do a garage sale to help defray costs? How about turning your loose change into cash? Do you have any old gold to sell? These are all things I've done to put a little extra spending money in my pocket.

Keep us posted. I'm so curious to see how this all plays out!

I think there's some kind of reverse psychology at work here. The more you tell yourself you can't go... the more you want to go! It's interesting that when you take a good look at the numbers, going to Disney is not much more expensive than a trip down south. We where surprised when we priced different locations for our honeymoon and got the same kind of results.

Good luck with your job search :)

:rotfl: I KNEW YOU WEREN'T GOING TO BE ABLE TO WAIT UNTIL 2015!!!! But I didn't think you'd cave so early!

Really, I do think your plans sound very reasonable though! I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed for you for a new job!!

Omg, we are the old couple among our friends too! Johnny actually complained once about why parties have to have alcohol, why couldn't they have tea or something? Our friends were killing themselves laughing that this big burly looking guy wants tea parties.
September is so close comparatively! I could live with September! And it's just good motivation to go job hunting!

Hahaha yes, you called it, we caved. If it weren't for free dining, we wouldn't be going this year so it is quite a pull!
My mother also suggested travel agent and so for the past few days I have been considering it. I might just go to our local agencies and drop off some resumes. Particularly the one I deal with often, they know how often I travel and more often than not, I'm correcting them on Disney info!
When you said you've never regretted a trip you have taken, it really struck home with me. So very true. I've never yet regretted a Disney trip and I am the same way when we come home, we never say we shouldn't have spent the money.
I love your money saving/earning ideas and I'm totally on the same page! I don't show my horses any more so I'm selling a bunch of old show clothes, (already sold some!) selling some fish and trying to breed more fish to sell even more! We each have a "piggy bank" where we put our loose change and in a few months time we'll roll them. No old gold, but Johnny works on construction sites as a plumber and often gets scrap copper. We are doing everything we can and I think it's going to work.

I think you're right, I never wanted to go as bad as I did when I said we couldn't. :rotfl:
I love that Disney is hardly more than other southern locations! Lots of people say to us "you're going to Disney AGAIN!? Why wouldn't you save your money and go to Cuba?" lol. 1. because we wouldn't save much and 2. because we would rather go to Disney! Hahaha
Thanks! :goodvibes

Really, I do think your plans sound very reasonable though! I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed for you for a new job!!
:lmao: Oh man, I should have known we would cave so early. I was trying to tell myself that we really would be waiting until 2015 but knowing us the way I do, this is so typical! :lmao:
And thank you! :goodvibes

Ha! I really didn't think you would cave this early... BUT I am glad you did! Super excited for the Sept trip. I hope you find a job soon so that you can make it official!

OMG! I can't believe you might be going in September, that's soooo awesome! :cool1: Free dining makes it really hard to resist at least pricing out a trip, doesn't it? I hope you can find a job soon so you can make your trip a reality!

:laughing:I can't believe you are already considering going back in Sept.

We have gone to Disney the last two years in May and I am starting to feel the void of having no upcoming trip:sad2: I should be starting to make matching t-shirts and packing ponchos.

I told DH today that if we are not pregnant by this summer I am going to just go to WDW by myself in Sept. to run the 10mile Tower of Terror run, but we'll see what happens. I need to start saving just in case.

As for resort choices- I would pick Pop/AKL. AKL is AMAZING!!! We rented points last year and we loved it. I am determined to try the Poly one day but DH has said no to other resorts when he goes to Disney, we have to stay at AKL.
