The Darling Family Takes on Marathon Weekend: Jan at the Boardwalk Villas

Jenny, I don't know how I missed that you had started this....man I'm late!!

Great report! Your last post was amazing...what a triumph....you must be so proud of him! Looks like you're all having an amazing time!

Fantastic story! Good for you "Peter Pan!" I have to admit it made me a bit misty. My DH had cancer 5 years ago and I feel like running saved him. He had some pain in his groin after running a 5K race. Thankfully he went to have it checked and discovered he had testicular cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy he is now cancer free. Running has continued to be his "triumph over adversity" as well. Thank you for sharing that great triumph!

WOW! Congratulations to your DH!:woohoo: What a feat! You must all be so proud of him! And way too cool that he ran as Peter Pan!

:eek:Yikes about the bus! Too bad they can't open the park and let the Epcot resort folks walk over.

I remember hearing about that family. I just never put it together that it was your family. Let me add my congrats to the hubby for the race and the triumphs!:yay::woohoo:

What a triumph for your DH to have overcome, I can see why your so proud!

Looking forward to more:goodvibes

When you recounted the story of your husband, I had tears in my eyes. I remember, then, the story of him being injured during the climb but I hadn't realized how badly his injuries were and all that you had been through. What a moving and inspiring story!

It was a crazy experience, but it all turned out OK in the end. I wonder if Pop had more buses than Boardwalk or if DH just hit the line at the wrong time. It all worked out OK for him because his wait was on a warm bus instead of standing around outside.

I heard there was an auto accident on the road that morning that was causing back up and delays. Maybe that had something to do with it? :confused3

What a great story about your DH's 1/2 marathon! Way to go:goodvibes:goodvibes

I loved that he dressed like Peter Pan...this is way I love Disney!!!!

great update!!!

Congrats to DH, that's incredible that he was able to overcome the lightning strike!

I love the Peter Pan character part of the story :)

Can't wait to hear about your race!!

Thank you. I loved that he was Peter Pan too. It shows me that even though sometimes he doesn't like aspects of a Disney trip (like the crowds and the heat) he really does "get it."

Jenny, I don't know how I missed that you had started this....man I'm late!!

Great report! Your last post was amazing...what a triumph....you must be so proud of him! Looks like you're all having an amazing time!
You aren't really all that late. There is still plenty of trip reporting ahead. Glad you made it over:goodvibes

Wow that must have been so scary for you. With DH it was only a very short period (maybe 6 hours) that I didn't know if he was alive. It seemed like a long time, of course, but after I found out he survived the strike there wasn't that fear (though we were concerned about the head injury for a while.) Fighting cancer is a whole different ballgame and I'm glad your husband made it through. I often tell people that "I run because I can." After going through something like cancer or a near death experience that phrase really takes on more meaning. I'm glad your husband is still here and is still triumphing.

It is a tad bit annoying that runners can't walk through Epcot in the morning. I'm sure they don't want to staff the park just so a stream of runners can walk through, but it would be much easier. Even after the race, Epcot wasn't open yet so he had to ride a bus back and he would have preferred to walk. Ironically after the marathon the park is open I could have walked back, but didn't want to (26 miles was enough for the moment.)

It was quite an experience this summer. There was an article in Outside Magazine, a blurb about the accident on the Today Show and the other morning shows. CNN, NBC and others wanted interviews. He wasn't up to it at the time so DH missed his 15 minutes of fame. Too bad for him:laughing:

Thank you! It was a great moment!

When you recounted the story of your husband, I had tears in my eyes. I remember, then, the story of him being injured during the climb but I hadn't realized how badly his injuries were and all that you had been through. What a moving and inspiring story!
I never really talked about the injuries here on the DIS. I think I just mentioned it briefly in the TR I was doing at the time. That day after the strike there was a period of time we didn't know who had survived. My dad accidently dialed my SIL at one point. All he told her was they had been struck by lightning and to call 911 because they needed an emergency rescue. He didn't say anything else so at that point we knew my dad was alive and that it was bad. The hours afterward were very scary and I remember saying to my SIL about DH, "He just has to come back to me. I don't care what kind of shape he is in. He just has to come back." So during his recovery I often remembered my feelings and prayers of that day. And I was just grateful that he was back. It's not an experience I want to repeat, but it is one of the greatest learning experiences of my life.

I heard there was an auto accident on the road that morning that was causing back up and delays. Maybe that had something to do with it? :confused3
That explains why the delays were so bad. I'm glad to hear it isn't always that bad for the half. There were no problems getting there for the Marathon on Sunday. (As you know.)

What a great story about your DH's 1/2 marathon! Way to go:goodvibes:goodvibes

I loved that he dressed like Peter Pan...this is way I love Disney!!!!
Only in a Disney race can someone dress up as Peter Pan and it seems completely normal! That's why I love Disney too:goodvibes

Wow that is truly inspiring  I remember when you posted on your last TR about what happened I was so scared and shocked for you. A big well done to your DH, you guys must be all so proud and what an experience for him as well during the race. I lol'd when you revealed he ran as Peter Pan, such a boy :goodvibes and getting a crow from Peter and a wave from Tink along the way must have really spurred him on :goodvibes

Love the jacket too, if you ever want me to send you over any of the Arsenal stuffs just let me know, will be happy to :)

Your birthday dinner looked like it was lots of fun and that sandwich was just huge!

Awesome pictures! Well worth the money I think. Thank you for sharing your story with all of us. It's truly inspiring and hearing stuff like that makes me love the sport even more!:goodvibes When Scott and I run the half together next year I am making us costumes for sure. He doesn't know it yet, though! :rotfl:

Of course I am crying over here at my computer reading your story!! That is such a special moment and I am AMAZED by his time alone and even more so after reading what happened!! Thank you for getting personal...I think thats what makes the DISboards so special in terms of sharing with...well..strangers :rotfl: I always feel like I actually have met the person and know them after I have read a great TR.

I love that DH dressed up as Peter Pan and had some special interactions along the way :goodvibes Really cool that the announcer did a shout out to him too!!

I remember you posting about the accident. Wow that is great how far everyone in your family has come. Tell your dh congrats on the 1/2 and what a great finish time. That was great that he dressed up:thumbsup2

What an amazing story. You must be so proud of him. I remember hearing about that accident back in July. Thank goodness your dad was there with your husband.

Your hubby's story got me a little choked up over here. It's funny thing what a guy can come back from, but you nailed it right on the head. A love for running wouldn't do it, neither would Disney or even a self want. Nope, for every thing that any guy has ever done which could be considered great or miraculous, it's always been for the girl he loves. Tell him we said :worship:

Wow, what a great story. Congrats to your DH on running (and finishing!) the race! :thumbsup2

Oh my goodness Jenny....I remember you posting on your PTR about your husband's accident but had no idea it was that bad!

Your story of your husband's Half Marathon race was inspiring and moving in and of itself...knowing the background makes it even more special. What a great trip for your entire family. :goodvibes

Love your husband's Peter costume for the race...and how cute is that story about Tink!:)

So glad to hear you had a fantastic birthday.:goodvibes I would have been so nervous at that point about the Marathon though...I can't wait to hear all about it, and hear what you did to prepare and (hopefully) take it easy before the race.:goodvibes

Your husband's story brought tears to my eyes. What a great triumph over adversary! I love that your family had such a great weekend and I can't wait to hear the story of your race.

Thanks for the congrats. It was a scary day, but it all ended OK. A big thank you for the Aresenal's offer, but I think DH has enough stuff for now:rolleyes1 I love that cheesesteak sandwich! It is so yummy!

I love when the runners wear costumes. I saw some good ones during the full. What are you thinking for next year?

Thank you so much. The Peter Pan thing was a great bonus to his well run race:goodvibes

Thank you. It was a great finish time. I guarantee I will never do a half that fast. And another congrats to you for your half too:goodvibes

What an amazing story. You must be so proud of him. I remember hearing about that accident back in July. Thank goodness your dad was there with your husband.
The accident was more reported on out west so I'm not suprised you heard about it. There were actually 18 people (in 3 different groups) on the mountain that day that were effected. Unfortunately one of them didn't make it back alive. I am so thankful my dad was there that day. I literally owe him my husband's life.
