The Dance Mom Thread

Yeah, I go with the cheap stuff mostly because I "share"--I would really not have a bunch of girls using the same lipstick, so I buy cheap and let them keep it.

Just wanted to stress to those new at this..........please DON'T share make up that has already been used. It spreads eye infections.

I would definitely ask the teacher or studio director about the choker and hair accessories before you purchase them. Sometimes they want all of the girls to have the same accessories and I'd hate to have you purchase them and then not be able to use them.

I would also ask the teacher before putting glitter in the hair. Not all studios are looking for that effect. Unless you are on friendly terms with the director, I would hesitate to suggest altering the costume. Some can be very touchy with that topic.

You'll need make-up remover to take it off, but it's worth it.

Make up remover wipes can work pretty good for a quickie removal. I used to buy the girls a huge container. The director of one of my son's previous schools had a rule of no make-up being worn on the drive home. She said it was unprofessional.

Yeah, if you're a dance mom, you become an expert on all kinds of things...hair, makeup, rhinestones, eyelashes. Last year our girls were dolls and we had to paint round red circles on their cheeks. I came up with the idea of a stencil, which worked a lot better than freehand (esp in the dressing room in a hurry!)

On drill team they use this lip paint on their lips...it DOES NOT come off...DD can eat an entire meal and the paint is still there.

Fake eyelash glue is great at keeping rhinestones on.:thumbsup2

I second eyelash glue for the rhinestones. DD2 does not have pierced ears, and all of the dancers have to wear the same earrings, so I glue the earrings directly to her lobes with eyelash glue (after I removed the post of course! :teeth: ).

As far as make up goes, for recital, just about anything from the drugstore will do. And as the mom of 2 fair skinned dancers, I recommend going one shade darker than natural skin tone if your DD is fair. The whole purpose of the make up is to define their features once those glaring stage lights hit them. If I were to use their skin tone, both of my DDs would be glaring white blobs on stage. :rotfl: And another vote for Covergirl Outlast! Our competetive dancers use it too since it lasts all day! No more smudges on costumes or kissed tights! But actually my best recommendation would be to ask your studio what they expect/want for make up.

And IMHO, Neutragena has the BEST make up remover wipes! They even take off the lipstick! And without scrubbing like you need to with other wipes. Maybe a little pricier, but well worth it for me and DDs!

So where do all the dance mom's purchase their leotards for dance class?

We get leotards and tights from Target and ballet slippers from Payless shoes. DDs tap shoes were found in her size in like new shape in the used shoe basket at her studio (which is why I finally gave in to her asking to please try a tap class - she loves it by the way!:goodvibes ).

Yeah, if you're a dance mom, you become an expert on all kinds of things...hair, makeup, rhinestones, eyelashes.

Haha! THIS I can relate to. Irish Dance moms don't become experts on makeup till our kids are older and/or have reached the highest levels of competition...but we DO become experts on wig application, wig care, sock glue, and bobby-pinning.

BTW, my 5 yo just did her first dance performance at the local Irish American Club on Saturday. She's only been taking classes for about 4.5 months. Well, I was really surprised when, after about 5 minutes of sitting amongst the championship-level dancers, she ran over and insisted her popcorn socks kept falling down so didn't we have any sock glue.?

They learn fast, lol

As a dance/cheer mom I've become an expert in practice clothes, costumes/uniforms, makeup, hair diamonds, wigs/hairpieces...all kinds of things I never expected to have to know about!

When the girls were at the dance studio, we had to buy the recital costumes from the studio, and we were told what type of shoe and color, like "a black jazz shoe" or "tan character shoe with a heel". No one told us what make up the girls had to wear.

But now that dd is on a high school team....the team controls every aspect of her appearance -- the costume, the exact model and color of shoe, the exact brand and color of the make up, eyelashes, hair diamonds, etc... the look must be as uniform as possible. Last year I had to go to three different drugstores to find all the makeup, but this year the team captains bought each girl her own set of eyeshadow, lipstick, etc. the girls have to have a hairpiece...it's really more like a scrunchie that wraps around the bun, but it's got hair tht matches the dancer's hair color.

I don't mind, really...at least I no longer have to deal with cheerleader curls. You know, those curly hairpieces cheerleaders and pom squads wear over their pony tails? My cheerleader dd's team isn't wearing the hairpieces this year -- they were outlawed at the competitions held by our local high school coaches association, ad our coach didn't feel it was necessary to get the hairpieces just for our trip to nationals.

Ugh! The curls! One year, our studio did "Can-can" as the opening number. Usually the director is real casual about hairstyles, but she wanted curly curls for the can-can girls. Well, at the time DD had hair to her knees. I did the curls, but man, I wasn't happy! Especially since I then had to re-do her hair a few times during the show (french braids for tumbling, a bun for ballet--you know the drill!)

I've been away on vacation and just getting around to reading this thread. I'm enjoying reading about all the dancers.:)

DD17 is a dancer. Unlike most kids, she started dancing at an older age. She took her first dance class (hip hop) at 13. At 14, she was asked to join the hip hop competition team at her studio, and she's never looked back! She has taken classes in hip hop, lyrical, modern, jazz, ballet, pointe, acro, and breakdance. The only style she doesn't do is tap. She tried it at one time, but just couldn't get the hang of it. She competes in hip hop, jazz, and modern/lyrical. This year she is competing a solo in modern. She also takes private lessons at a gymnastics center because she wanted to be able to do back handsprings and aerials, which she quickly learned.

It's really incredible how far my daughter has come in just a few short years. I guess she just has a natural talent for dance. Every instructor that has worked with her believes this. She also loves it and is dedicated to it. She is constantly striving to achieve new skills and is always eager to learn from more experienced dancers.

DD is especially strong in hip hop, acro, breakdance, and modern/lyrical. Ballet and Pointe are not her strengths or favorite forms of dance. Of course, she must take ballet classes since it IS the foundation for everything else.:) DD does not have the physical build of a ballet dancer. She is barely 4'11" and 105 lbs. She is small, but muscular. Many times she has been asked by others that don't know her if she's a gymnast. When she tells them that she's a dancer, they usually say, oh yeah, I can see that, too!:)

In addition to taking classes and competing at her studio, my daughter has taken master classes with professional choreographers from around the country (she has attended the Pulse Workshops in NYC and taken classes at Broadway Dance Center and Dance New Amsterdam) and earlier this year, she was asked to apprentice with a local modern dance company. She is LOVING learning and working with the group! The dancers are very, very good (they are all quite a bit older than DD and have years of dance experience) and they are wonderful role models.

DD is a senior in high school and this will be her last year at the studio. She will be attending the University of Arizona in the fall. It's been a year of ups and downs. I can tell that she is ready to move on from the world of dance competitions. There have been a few scheduling conflicts this year, where events with the modern group she is apprenticing with have coincided with dance competitions. She's really not a competition type of dancer, if that makes any sense. That's not to say that she doesn't do well because she does. With her solo this year, she has taken first place and top senior solo score at every competition she's been in so far. I just know that she'd rather take classes and do more of a variety of dance events.

I'm not sure what the future holds for DD as far as dance goes. She auditioned for the dance program at the University of Arizona (they have one of the top dance programs in the country) but she did not get in. 300/400 students audition a year, and approximately 30 are accepted. She was disappointed, but she knew she didn't do very well at the audition. She was extremely nervous. She still wants to go to the U of A, and can reaudition next year if she wants to.

DD also has two dance companies that would like to have her work with them. The modern company that she is apprenticing with would love to have her work with them next year, and there is a professional choreographer that DD has taken master classes with that has talked to her about assisting and working with her company. As her parents, we would like to see her get that college degree before going out into the world.

One thing is for certain, DD is very talented in dance (and this is not just coming from her mom-:rotfl: ) and she has the ability to go far. Whatever she decides to do, we're here for her. While on vacation last week, we saw the Beatles LOVE Cirque Du Soliel show in Las Vegas. DD LOVED the dancing and aerial feats and now wants to take classes in aerial dance. She's a big fan of the 60's music and now thinks she has found her calling.:hippie: She's also mentioned auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance. She isn't old enough for this season coming up, but perhaps next year.:confused3

Like I said, who knows what the future holds! And, wow, I didn't mean to post such a long reply!

ETA: I've never had to deal with the costume, hair and make-up issues that many of you have posted about. I guess that's a good thing about having a daughter start dance at an older age! Luckily, her studio has always been totally in charge in that area! They've always been very specific about costumes, make-up and such, especially for competitions, and the older girls are responsible for doing their own hair and make-up. They must follow specific guidelines. I do know that the studio recommends MAC products. The make-up is VERY expensive, but it is definitely good quality and it lasts a long time. I also agree with the poster that mentioned using the more expensive make-up cloth removers.

I was going to say in my post but forgot is that our studio has specific colors of makeup for the girls of every brand. Last year when she was at the old studio they had picked out a makeup kit from Mary Kay and it cost about $135!:scared1: None of the mini company moms did this because we thought it was ridiculous for a 5 year old so we decided on a lip color with the teacher and then used our own makeup.

This new studo has specific makeup too but its all Cover Girl or Maybelline. Thank Goodness. I'll still use my Bare Minerals on her as Foundation because it just looks nicer and less chance of her having a reaction but everything else I'll have to use what the studio says. Lets hope the lipstick is still Cover Girl Outlast. Its just the BEST!

Our girls were required to buy a small professional stage make-up kit w/ foundation selected by the make-up artist to match skin tone & all else standard selected by the studio director. I thought it was nuts @ $75, w/ an extra $13 on a special brush DD wanted. I guess I should count myself lucky it wasn't Mary Kay!

Even on the non-competitive side of our studio, girls are requested to not wear any jewelry, make-up colors are given (green shadow/pinky blush, etc.) They've never had a problem w/ the body or hair glitter, but as much as possible they want all in a number to look uniform.

Oh I know I didnt think Mary Kay was THAT expensive but I saw what they were doing. Like 3 different eye shadow colors. A lip liner, lipstick and lip gloss. That stuff adds up. Turns out one of the teachers sold Mary Kay on the side. :rolleyes1 That kind of made up our mind not to buy it either. :sad2: I'm glad we are out of that place.

I forgot to mention we all have the same jewelry earrings and necklaces too.

We all have to buy Mary Kay for the private dance company. It lasts for several years, however.

The curls! My DD the gymnast has to have real curls....I've become quite the expert on making tiny tight curls.

When the other Dd was in 7th grade, her hair was down to her bottom and her dance team had to wear their hair in a low ponytail, with the pony tail in tight curls....boy did I learn how to do tight curls! (thank you Sally Beauty Supply for all the products that I didn't even know still existed.) I'd put 85-90 tiny curlers in DD's hair. It was a running joke to find the forgotten curler because it seems I always left one in that I couldn't see. After the curlers were out, her hair looked so great-people would stop her and ask if it was real. Of course, gravity took over and the curly pony tail fell as the day went on.

I HATE having to do curls!

DD1 is finally out of the curl stage at our studio. She has one dance that still requires it, but that is her trio which usually competes/performs on a different day than her group dances. This year we got low-pont, left part or low bun, left part for all of their dances. Much easier.

Unfortunately, I now have DD2 in the youngest group, and for some reason, our studio loves doing big hair with the younger dancers. Ugh! With DD2, I have to do a high right pony, crimped! Yes, crimped! The song is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and the costuming is very 80s too. Their tap dance is to Lonely Goatherd from Sound of Music, so I am terrified what the hair is going to need to be for that!

A year ago we left a school that was more into competitions (ballet mostly) and changed to a much more relaxed school that also includes theater. They usually do 1-2 comps a year, plus a national in the summer. They just sent out a survey and I responded that quitting the comps would be great with me! I prefer performances and community stuff instead.

My dd13 ..she dances ballet, pointe, jazz, hip-hop, modern. She's in ballet co and dance co (everything that's not ballet)

My dd15 is in ballet co, theater, and high school theater group

My dd11 is in theater at dance school and jr high.

In the fall, dd13 was in Nutcracker, dd15 in HS showcase and play, dd11 in Grease.

This spring, dd15 is in hs Beauty and the Beast, dd11 is in jr high Seussical
AND the dance school is having a regular recital middle of May, Lil Abner 2 weeks later, and ballet La Fille Mal Garde 2 weeks later.

And my dd 15 wants to add a sweet sixteen party in there somewhere!

Needless to say, mom's taxi is in gear from 1:30-9:00 almost every day driving between the 3 locations and home. I'm sure other dance moms understand why we do this, insane as it seems. They're so happy and I definitely feel as they reach the teen years, the busier they are, the better.

My mom is turning 72 in May and still teaches ballet. My sister is a ballet teacher, too (3000 miles away). The insanity IS hereditary.

luvflorida...I hope your dd tries out for SYTYCD! So cool.

I can't wait til May 22nd for SYTYCD to start!

New to the dance world here DD#1 is 7 and is in her first yr of a comp team besides regular dance class( third yr) we just got the makeup for the team it was 55 for the blush, eyeshadow, shimmer pot?, and lipstick from mode dion? - THe first comp is in April I don't really know what to expect!!

DD#2 also takes ballet/tap/jazz too!
:dance3:

The year DD's waist length hair had to be in tight curls, the recital order was (1) tap - tight curls; (2) ballet - bun; and (3) jazz - tight curls. I told the competition team director that it was totally beyond my skill level to get that giant mass of tight curls into a bun without ruining the tight curls or having the bun fall down, so she actually came into the dressing room and did the bun!
