I live across the street from a working grapefruit grove. It's fascinating! I always say a prayer in February that, after they are through harvesting, the grove will be fertilized and then the trees will be cut to size. With so many of the groves disappearing for more and more houses, seeing the workers come with these huge machines is always cause for celebration!
A few weeks ago the top trimmer was here.
Those disks you see on the arm are actually super sharp blades. They like to keep the trees in the 12-15 foot range so every Spring they lop off the tops of them with this thing. Now while that's a pretty scary gizmo, it pales in comparison to the side cutter which is out there working now.
How'd ya like to see that coming at you??!
This is the going away view, something I'm always glad to see. We are directly across the street from that row he's working. My DH says I wonder if they ever lose control and what would happen if it hit the front of the house?
If you look closely, you can see bits and pieces of the trees flying up in the air as the blades hit them.
I always thought this would be a great gig for Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs.

Besides looking scary, they sound scary too.
