[/FONI am planning a possible trip to Disney. What's up with The Contemporary? Why is it so "fascinating"? How did it get such a reputation over the years? Also, who has a good story about staying there? Anything really. Thanks folks!T]

Well their overall location speaks for itself because it's the closest resort to the Magic Kingdom and the only one with a walkway that goes there. Now what's great about the Tower rooms is that everything is located right there when it comes to their stores, restaurants, Monorail station on the 4th floor and etc.

that is a good selling point. How are the pools? Is there access to the beach ( I know you can't swim...)
I want to stay there so bad :rotfl:

There is a small beach area. There are two pools. The feature pool has a slide, but I prefer the quiet pool by the lake because it's a little deeper (at least, in part). The marina at CR is also great, because it offers a few things, like parasailing, that aren't offered at other resort marinas.

Transportation at CR is pretty easy. You have the monorail, which will get you to Epcot and MK (although you can also walk to MK, and the walk takes less time), and buses to AK and DHS. Since you are within walking distance of the MK bus depot, you have easy access to other resorts for dining or just sightseeing.

There is a wide variety of dining opportunities at CR, plus you are an easy boat or monorail ride away from four other resorts and their restaurants.

The standard rooms at CR are some of the largest on property. It's a big enough difference that if you've stayed at other deluxes, for example, YC/BC, you'll notice the size difference right away.

If you're on a budget, the garden wing rooms can be the best bargain on the monorail line. You don't get a balcony on the wing rooms (although the ground floor rooms do have a small patio), but otherwise the wing rooms are identical to the tower rooms. I actually prefer the wing rooms to the tower rooms - they are closer to the pool and marina.

CR is one of those resorts people either love or hate, and I happen to love it. I like that the theme is more subtle instead of in your face. I love the location and layout. I love the size of the rooms, and they have beds so comfortable you'll be tempted to sleep your vacation away. :cloud9:

In my opinion, the best thing is the walkway to MK. At the end of the day, with a tired kid in a stroller, I find it much easier to walk back then to go toward the monorail with the crowds (or bus if I was staying someplace else). Of course, DD is now out of a stroller, so we will see if that works next time.

The CR is a nice enough resort, although far from our favorite. I will say the first year we stayed there we had booked a garden view room and were upgraded to a tower room with a view of the castle which ws very nice (but not something I would personally pay for). It is neat to see the monorail go through it the first time or two. We are of the mind where "location" doesn't mean much to us as we always rent a car and drive to the parks, ADR's, etc. (and we found the monorail to be overrated as it can be as slow in loading, arriving or moving as the buses).

Its sort of lame but 2 years ago we had just finished unpacking, went down to the 4th floor and had a snack before MVMCP. While I was eating I looked at the Pinocchio thing they have their and for the first time since we arrived I got that feeling of I am really back at WDW!

A major plus with their buses is that Contemporary guests are always the 1st ones to be picked up and dropped off. In the mornings they will either share with the Polynesian or Wilderness Lodge, however anyone staying at the Contemporary will be picked up 1st. In the afternoon/evening they share with both the Polynesian and Grand Floridian, however once again you will be picked up 1st and dropped off 1st when coming back from Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom or Downtown Disney.

I stayed at the CR as a young adult in the early 70's and once again last year. To me, it is part of Walt's vision. You can see the MK and watch the castle change colors at night from your balcony as well as watch the monorail running through the hotel. I thought I might be disappointed going back to the CR last December because sometimes our memories of 30 plus years ago do not live up to our expectations. But the CR was even more magical this last trip! I felt like I was in the heart of Disney.

I love the place. Funny thing is that when we stayed at other resorts and would visit I used to think the place looked just too open with people coming & going all the time. But when we actually stayed there I realized the Imagineers did a really good job of giving guests the 'feel' of intimacy. I think you're going to love it:goodvibes

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. MK is the one park you really don't want to drive to - because of the hassle of going through the TTC to get to your destination. So if you are going to drive to the other parks anyway, being able to walk to MK makes this location an excellent choice.

I would have to say that I don't typically use the monorail to get to MK from CR though, because you have to go through all the stops and it takes about 20-25 minutes, where walking takes about 10 minutes. However, the one good thing about the monorail is that it is on a fairly reliable schedule (barring any maintenance issues), where the buses are at the mercy of traffic. So while it can still take some time to get to MK or Epcot by monorail, I've found the monorails to be a more efficient mode of transportation than the buses - but no where close to the convenience of taking your own car.

Not lame at all, that is what WDW is all about.

We've never had a problem driving to the MK and actually enjoy it. We are usually there an hour before opening and we park so close that we walk to the TTC and then hop on the ferry in most instances as we have found the monorail to be very slow (we waited 15 minutes to get a monorail from the Poly back to the MK in September when we went to visit the Poly for a break in the early afternoon). But each person has their own preference and many, as is evident on these boards, swear that the monorail is the greatest thing on earth. I just don't see it that way from our experiences over 20 trips.

Well where I come from location is everything and I'm used to paying a lot for location. Everyday I have a view of the Washington Monument.

The Contemporary is all about location, simple as that. You can see the MK and walk to the MK or take a short ride to the MK.

Here's our story:

A few years back we stayed at the Poly for a second time instead of the usual CR Tower.

For 3 nights we endured a barely cleaned room, a longhouse hallway that was full of sand and overflowing garbage near the elevator, and getting soaked every time we had to walk out of the longhouse to go anywhere.

On day 3 we were coming up to the CR on the monorail and my DH and DD moaned about missing the CR. I instantly made the executive decision to get off the monorail, go to the lobby and ask if we could immediately switch. A CM was very accommodating and showed us to a beautiful ground floor Garden Wing room (Tower was sold-out, but we actually got a refund for the price difference between Poly and CR;)) at the very end, closest to the pool and directly in front of Bay Lake. We said, "We'll take it!" We went right back on the monorail and packed-up and drove to the CR and we were all very happy.

This was a few years back and we've stayed at the CR every year since. However, I'm currently planning our 8-10 trip and DD's first choice is the Poly:sad2: or YC:sad2: "for a change". She thinks we've stayed at the CR too much - impossible! Right?:confused3

I just wanted to say based on my families experiences yes there have been times when the Monorail we were had to stop on the tracks, however the longest time we were stopped was maybe 2 - 3 minutes and sometimes we stopped for less then 30 seconds. There was only one time when there was a problem with the whole Monorail system coming back from Epcot where it would stay a bit longer at each stop, although things could have been worse and we were not in a rush getting back to the Contemporary. Also just like you we always walk to the Magic Kingdom because it's faster, however we have no problems taking the Monorail to visit the Polynesian and Grand Floridian. Finally when it comes to the time it takes while it sits at the other stations I would say when they are not busy it sits there for no more then 5 minutes, however when there are longer lines and etc they try to move as fast as possible and use the final borading call announcement. However once again that doesn't bother us because I would rather be waiting for the Monorail to move then being stuck in regular traffic on the highway back home in Toronto.

I agree with this post. CR's big advantage is easy access to and particularly FROM the MK. At closing time, it can be a real crush getting back on buses, and the ability to just walk is nice. You do PAY for that in higher room charges. It also seems to feel a little more in the middle of things. I would never pay their rack rates for it but I have stayed with FL resident and other sale rates.

But I prefer driving to the other parks.

I find it amusing that people will spend 8-10 hours a day in parks walking, then balk at the 10 minute walk back to the hotel when staying at CR or the Epcot Resorts.

The best thing about the resort, obviously is the location.

But--the rooms are beautiful, too and modernly decorated and super comfy.
