A&E has a program on right now, "The Day the Towers Fell." I have a hard time watching, but I am. My husband was GLUED to the news networks for weeks and weeks after 9/11, and it was all just too heartbreaking for me. I will never, never forget, but I have a terrible time "going back."
I also have positive memories of 9/11 and the days and weeks following, though. My house and some of our neighbors had flags up every day, but on that day and the weeks that followed, everyone in our neighborhood had their flags out. One of my most vivid memories of that day (one of the good ones, that is) will always be looking out and seeing my neighbor across the street lean out his attic window and unfurl a flag that reached the ground. I remember our local blood banks asking on radio and television for people NOT to come, because they were overwhelmed and had no more storage available. I also remember people being kinder to one another, more patient in traffic, smiling (although rather wan, sad smiles) at strangers...I think just generally appreciating one another and the specialness of being an American for awhile. Sometimes I wish we could go back to that sense of solidarity and fierce love for one another, without the need for a horrible tragedy to get us there.
Welcome Just4now. I'm another one like you; interested but not super knowledgeable. I hang out here for the food and companionship, and the people here are very nice. They allow you to have an opinion without supporting links, and without having to be a political genius.
