Thanks for the welcome. I'm not usually much for political discussion because I'm always afraid I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. But I do like to read a lot.

Don't worry - that's me also! Everyone is friendly here. :goodvibes

Just read this interesting tidbit:

I thought you’d be interested to know that the word for ‘rebirth’ in New Testament Greek is ‘Palingenesia.’

 Welcome. I am not a big debater, but it is nice being able to come here and share ideas and observations-like the really irritating one below:

On a sad note, it seems that the theme "We will never forget" only applies to Fox news. From what I can tell, NONE of the major networks are covering any of the 9/11 memorial services. I guess Regis and Kelly and the Today show are much more important.x

Today I found out that a fellow DISer on another thread I am very active on, is a survivor of 9/11. I still cry when I think of what happened. And I am so grateful that there were so many survivors.

This morning I clicked on an article about SP being interviewed by Charles Gibson - old news....what was funny is that the article kept mentioning SP's handlers - like, her handlers were very protective of her at first but now her handlers see that she can hold her own in what could be a combative situation....I know that's standard language to describe campaign staff but don't you think our Sarracuda needs handlers? I mean, to make sure the other guys will be safe?

LOVE IT!!!

You've just described ME!!:rotfl:

That is why this place is so great. They make you feel comfortable to share and that you are not an idiot for being a conservative. :woohoo:

I'm going to have to give that to my DH........he took Greek in college. Got straight 100's.......(he is such a brainiac......ever hear the expression, "opposites attract"?) :teeth:

What!!

None of the other networks carried it? I was watching Fox and was going to check out the other channels but never did. You've got to be kidding me? What are they doing? It's not like it was 20 years ago........that freaks me out.

Didn't Fox do a nice job?

They played 20 minutes of their coverage on that day, 9/11, as all the events happened chronologically. It was very moving. I remember hearing about the first plane, turning on the tv and hardly moving from that spot for 5 days. I watched as the second plane went in on live tv. I was screaming, crying..........I was homeschooling my oldest at the time (she was 7). She was upset too, since she was close by the tv. I told her that she was never going to forget that day and where she was when it happened. She'll be telling her grandchildren about that day.

I didn't think that 7 years later I would cry, but I did.........it brought back those feelings of confusion, sadness, anger, love for my country, love for my fellow man.........all of it.

What........they're afraid that if they mention 9/11 they'll be labeled as a Bush backer?? I thought we were all Americans.

I agree, I am not a crier but this morning I did cry. I was driving to work and on a bridge there was a firetruck with it's lights on and about 15 people waving flags. They had a HUGE banner that said "we will never forget". I just started crying right there.

A&E has a program on right now, "The Day the Towers Fell." I have a hard time watching, but I am. My husband was GLUED to the news networks for weeks and weeks after 9/11, and it was all just too heartbreaking for me. I will never, never forget, but I have a terrible time "going back."

I also have positive memories of 9/11 and the days and weeks following, though. My house and some of our neighbors had flags up every day, but on that day and the weeks that followed, everyone in our neighborhood had their flags out. One of my most vivid memories of that day (one of the good ones, that is) will always be looking out and seeing my neighbor across the street lean out his attic window and unfurl a flag that reached the ground. I remember our local blood banks asking on radio and television for people NOT to come, because they were overwhelmed and had no more storage available. I also remember people being kinder to one another, more patient in traffic, smiling (although rather wan, sad smiles) at strangers...I think just generally appreciating one another and the specialness of being an American for awhile. Sometimes I wish we could go back to that sense of solidarity and fierce love for one another, without the need for a horrible tragedy to get us there.

Welcome Just4now. I'm another one like you; interested but not super knowledgeable. I hang out here for the food and companionship, and the people here are very nice. They allow you to have an opinion without supporting links, and without having to be a political genius. :)

I think most of us were glued to that TV for weeks ...I was so numb...I felt such despair that the US had changed in just a moment. I was so fearful for my children and what there future would be like at that point. I felt no safety for them at all. It brought back the memories of when I was young and we had the Russian nukes pointed at us.

How easy it was for those Terrorists to do what they did. 2 of the Terrorists lived in my town and worked at the local gas station..who new :confused3

seems we took our freedoms for granted and that the GOV was on top of all that. Us as civilians never even thought about such a terrorist act could happen to us...not here in the USA....well again we underestimated the thoughts of crazy people and there radical religion.

welcome :) This is the thread that brought me out of lurker status as well :)

None of us are political geniuses....there are a few posters here that probably think they are, but in reality they just have the ability to google something fast:lmao:

Its always interesting to see other people's viewpoints, and (for me at least) I'm fascinated by how people arrive at some of their beliefs, especially when they are different from mine. You can always learn something new from people, even if you don't happen to like/agree with it.

People in this thread are generally friendly and welcoming, though, which is a nice refuge from some of the other threads that are floating around.:thumbsup2

Combat troops of US-led foreign forces are already out of the cities of up to 14 of Iraq's 18 provinces, General David Petraeus, head of the coalition forces in Iraq, said on Thursday.
"Actually we are out of the cities with combat forces in probably 14 of the provinces of Iraq," Petraeus said in an interview with AFP.

He said combat troops continued to be in Baghdad, Salaheddin, Diyala and Nineveh where US-led forces are actively chasing insurgents, Al-Qaeda extremists and Shiite militias.

"Even in Tamim (Nineveh), we are largely in the periphery of different cities," Petraeus said.

Iraq has already taken security control of 11 of the 18 provinces in the country with two more provinces, Wasit and Babel, to be handed over to Baghdad by US forces in the near future.

Petraeus's comments come at a time when Washington and Baghdad are negotiating a contentious security deal that would decide the future of US forces in Iraq.

Iraqi negotiators have told AFP that the two sides have agreed to withdraw combat forces from Iraqi cities by June 2009 and from the country by 2011.

Petraeus said coalition forces have hardly any presence in the southern provinces.

"We have some presence in southern provinces outside the cities... in some cases they are nothing more than small bases which could be a provincial reconstruction team, or a transition team or a special forces team," he said.

Petraeus hands over command of the coalition forces to General Raymond Odierno on September 16.

He has been credited for the success of the troop "surge" strategy launched last year by US President George W. Bush that helped reduce violence in Iraq to a current four-year low.

Excellent news! God Bless Our Troops! :thumbsup2

Just wanted to share a little story with you guys. This morning I was a keynote speaker at a 9/11 breakfast meeting. While I was getting ready - my son came into my room with his Marine Corp uniform on (some of you have seen his picture :))

He always wears his uniform to school on 9/11. He will be 8 on Nov. 1st. He is in second grade. When I walked him to his class this morning - I ended up talking to his teacher out in the hallway for a few minutes about nothing particular. After my DS hung his bookbag up - he came out in the hallway where we were and asked his teacher if he could talk to the class about 9/11.
I think she was initially nervous about how detailed he might get - not knowing how much the other parents want their children knowing. So she asked my DS - "what would you like to say?" My DS answered "I would just like to say to our class that 7 years ago our country was attacked by terrorists. They flew planes into the WTC, the Pentagon, and a field in PA. Today I'm wearing this uniform because I believe that freedom is worth fighting for".

I'm not ashamed to say I bawled my eyes out on the way back to my car. He makes me so darn proud!

Sorry about the proud mom brag - I just had to share!

2 terrorists lived near me, too. And they frequented a business in my old town. The owner of the building where they lived put out a big American flag hanging from their old apartment window after it happened. But I live in an area with one of the highest middle eastern populations in the States.

I remember that our friend who owns a gun store told us about the many calls he got with people saying they wanted to buy a gun. When he told them they would have to get permits, Firearm ID cards, etc, they where surprised.:confused3

I was glued to the TV, too. With my MIL. Since my DH was there, we where so worried. They where waiting for other buildings to fall. My DH said they
would sound an alarm and tell everyone to run. He would come home covered in soot and dust.:sad2: He said TV did not do it justice, how bad it really was there. He doesn't talk about it much now.
