Happy Birthday Billy Graham:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Billy Graham's work as a pastor to presidents is coming to an end, but he is praying for Barack Obama as the nation's next leader begins his work, Graham's son said Friday on the ailing evangelist's 90th birthday.

Franklin Graham said in an interview that his father's mind remains sharp even as his body continues to fail. But the preacher who has counseled every president beginning with Eisenhower is not in line to mentor Obama.

"My father feels like his time and day for that is over," Franklin Graham said. "But he would certainly like to meet (Obama) and pray with him."

Graham's views of the world are still respected in White House circles. Republican presidential candidate John McCain visited Graham at his mountainside home during the campaign, and Obama tried to meet Graham but wasn't able to do so because of the preacher's poor health.

Though never partisan in his preaching, Billy Graham is a registered Democrat. His son expressed concern about Obama's views on abortion and gay marriage - an issue Franklin Graham raised in a meeting with the Illinois senator - saying that he and is father are conservatives who believe the Bible speaks clearly on those issues.
"President-elect Obama heard our position," Franklin Graham said. "And I told him that this was very difficult for us and hard for us. It's a moral issue that we just can't back down on."

"But he's our president-elect, and those positions that he holds that are contrary to Biblical teaching, I hope that God will change his heart," said Graham, who now heads the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Obama favors abortion rights, and does not support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marrage. He supports civil unions and believes states should decide their own laws about marriage.

About 160 of Graham's close family and friends celebrated his birthday with an intimate gathering Friday at his home in Montreat, featuring fried chicken, barbecue and sweet tea. His ministry had received some 100,000 greetings - including a video from President Bush - from people who told stories about how he changed their lives. Graham's son said they would be bound so that someone could read a few dozen letters to him each day.

Encouragement is partly what Graham needs. He still struggles with the loss of his wife, Ruth, who died last year, and Frankin Graham notes his father has said he has more friends in heaven than on earth.

An avid consumer of news, Billy Graham still listens to television - he has macular degeneration and has can't read more than the headlines of a newspaper - and follows the events of the day. He spends much of his day napping and resting, and Franklin visits on Sundays to try and coax him to make the 100-yard walk to the barn next to the mountainside home in Montreat.

Graham's health is fragile. He was hospitalized overnight last month after falling over his dog while trying to pet it. He had elective surgery earlier this year to update a shunt that controls excess fluid on his brain. The shunt was first installed in 2000 and drains fluid from through a small tube, relieving excess pressure that can cause symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease.

Graham was hospitalized last year for nearly two weeks after experiencing intestinal bleeding, and he has also had prostate cancer. But Graham has still outlived doctors' expectations and some of the doctors themselves.

"He could catch a cold and his life could come to an end," Franklin Graham said. "At his age, any little thing could be a serious event. We realize that."

His days at 90 are a stark contrast to Graham's days as a globe-trotting evangelist - a ministry that put him behind the pulpit to speak with 215 million people in more than 185 countries and placed him in the confidence of some of the world's most powerful people.

Graham still writes and remains engaged in the planning and direction of the ministry he founded. This week, his booming voice will once again cross borders as a message dubbed in Portuguese will be broadcast in Brazil as part of an effort to bring some 1 million new believes into the fold this weekend.

But privately, he has been working on a book about aging, trying to put his late-life lessons into context for those soon to follow him.

"He's always been ready to die," Franklin Graham said. "But nobody's prepared him for getting old."

"Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start."

I can see it now: BO will start requiring retirees to jump thru hoops (volunteer, join one of his many Corps) in order for them to get their social security checks. This is scary stuff people.

I called the Catholic school for my son yesterday, and he is now number 3 on the list for 2nd grade (next yr.) He has been on the list for two years, so I hope he will make it!

My daughter was on the list for a Catholic school here and didn't make it in. I was so bummed. She is now in the 6th grade in public school and we are not happy with how things are being run. It is a public school and very liberal. We are looking into homeschooling and hopefully it will workout. I hope he gets into the private school next year.

Hey all! I ducked out while the political craziness was going on but wanted to come back now that it is all over. Can I re-join you?

Wow! I pop in and out of here, and usually try to keep up, but there's no way I'm reading all 34 new pages!

Anyways, I was dumb and commented on a note on facebook by a "friend" that was bashing Palin. I said, "you do realize that you just voted for a man who is on tape TWICE as saying we have 57 states?" The friend's response was that he didn't believe that because it wasn't publicized! So now, because the MSM doesn't report on something, it's automatically not true??? Wow!

He actually said this back in the primaries and not the general election. He only said 57 one time and the second gaff was 60( ? :confused3 ) I think. He had a couple of different number of states that we had in this country and none of them were 50. So, if your "friend" wants to do some digging, he should be able to find it. Youtube is blocked at my job, so I can't search, but you might be able to find at least one clip on there. I know it was discussed on this message board back when it occurred. I think DawnCT even had a thread on that and his other gaffs linking to a news article or something - so it was publicized. But, like anything at all negative about Obama, the OS chose to ignore and deflect. And then bash Palin. And then bash Palin some more. What are they going to do with themselves in about another month or so when they run out of stuff to bash Palin over? :confused3

Of course! You were really nice and welcomed me when I first joined this thread even though I was a Hillary supporter.

Were you quoting me? Is that my quote since those are my days to be at WDW? I'd love to meet up with you. I'll send you a PM.

I haven't gone near that thread today or last night, but I read it when it was fresh and so far (then) it was calm and respectful. I am pretty sure that light hearted comment was meant sarcastically, or ironically.

I wondered about that. I guess I have no sense of humor when it comes to the A word.;)

Bummer, we arrive on the 3rd.

Sounds good to me. :) But ya know, Honu lives way on up there in Wacky Whatcom. Long drive. Guess she could hop a ferry, though. Hmmm. What could we go do? Pacific Science Center? Seattle does have some redeeming qualities...

I agree with Honu. The zoo would be awesome. But I have to bring my son. :thumbsup2

Hi welcome back.......(waving)

It's still kinda crazy though........(for which I "bear" some responsibility).......

:)

Is it me, or does it seem like every time in recent years there's a razor thin Senate race with the GOP candidate in the lead that suddenly the state "finds" new votes for the Democrat??? Well, it looks like this year's version may put Al Franken in the Senate after all:
What's Happening In Minnesota?

When the polls closed Tuesday evening, Minnesota's Secretary of State's office showed that Norm Coleman had a 725-vote win in his closely contested race against Al Franken. By the next morning, however, Coleman's victory was already shrinking. As various precincts and county auditors have "corrected" their totals, Coleman's lead has dropped to a mere 237 votes. Minnesota Republicans are concerned that the fix may be in.
An update adds more head-scratching:
Hot off the press, the first apparent evidence of fraud. Last night at around 7:30, a precinct in Mountain Iron, St. Louis County, mysteriously updated its vote total to add 100 new votes--all 100 for Barack Obama and Al Franken.

Mountain Iron uses optical scanning, so the Coleman campaign asked for a copy of the tape documenting the ballots cast on election night. St. Louis County responded by providing a tape that includes the newly-added 100 votes, and is dated November 2--the Sunday before the election. St. Louis County reportedly denies being able to produce the genuine tape from election night, even though Minnesota law, as I understand it, requires that tape to be signed by the election judges and publicly displayed.

Maybe there is some legitimate explanation for these events, but I haven't thought of one yet. More to come.
Here we go again!!!

Coleman may have to take that thing to court. There are not enough of these  to express my feelings about Al Franken being in the Senate for six years.

You people are posting machines! There are 30+ pages to read!:scared1:

I have a fundraiser tonight for my mom's group so I won't be in much today! I hope everyone is doing well!

You've GOT to be kidding me? How can Minn. vote in Al Franken AND Sen. Michele Bachman at the same time? What's going on out there? Multiple personality disorder?

Hey, no one answered if they would be at WDW during Easter time.............anyone? I know I'm crazy for visiting that time of year but I needed a fix and that was the only time we could work it out.
