OMG!! I finally talked to my MIL. She tried really hard to be gracious....barely talked about the election....IT WAS MUCH WORSE!!! She wants DH and I to go to the inauguration:scared1: I couldn't believe it but, yet I shouldn't be surprised. She has invitations to one of the balls. She said, she knows I'm not a democrat (that's an understatement) but, "it's a historical occaision." :scared: She's sure DH wants to go. I know he could care less..and I'd rather have a "do-it-yourself" root canal...while, having my toenails pulled out...one by one. I told her we had vacation plans the week before...it would be hard to be gone that long. This is sad but, I can't and won't go. The inauguration is not something I can celebrate. I hate hurting her feelings but, geesh....she should know better.

**edited to add** I might could stomach the party but, the swearing-in..... That would be more than my conservative heart could bear.:sad1:
I just want to barf reading your post. LOL.

Your puppy is getting bigger already, bb! He's a cutie!

Hour four of being a deer widow and I've already cleaned up his side of the bedroom, cut and organized my coupons, and threw out most of the magazine pile after a quick go through. I usually have a brand new coach purse in my hand by now so I'm trying to stay away from the malls!

I made the mistake, and it was MISTAKE because I've been with him since 84, of saying, "I hope you catch a deer." I got laughed at. lol

OH, DD is at work, and since it is the weekend I don't expect to see her till Sunday night, but she's 23 so not my problem.
DS is in his room playing WOW. He occassionally runs out to tell me what new quest he's finished, but I have no idea what it all means.

Yeppers.. .its an exciting night in the W household! *rolling eyes*
As soon as I'm done with this post, I'll be downstairs reorganizing the basement. I don't have a hunter for a husband (thank goodness) - he's a fisherman so I never see him in the spring, so I can't relate, but I have to admit - your post got me laughing! If you all don't see me for a while, I'm stuck in the basement. I hope to get it all done by tomorrow night. Wish me luck!

Who brought up the Campaign for Human Development earlier?

I went searching and hit the website. And found the link to this letter.

http://www.usccb.org/cchd/MorinACORN Letter.pdf

I now feel better and will be placing money in the collection basket as I'd planned.
i didn't read the article, but I had read somewhere that the Catholic Church cut off all funding for ACORN. Is that what it's about?

Funny story with that ring. We were Christmas shopping with an almost eight year old and a seventh month old. DH HATES malls. He was wandering aimlessly and it was making me angry. I turned around and said, DO you have any idea what you are looking for? You're driving me crazy! He wasn't there... he had walked right into Zales and was looking at rings. I wanted to kick myself.

He spent two hours in that store with me insisting that I pick out what I wanted, don't worry about the cost, I was worth it. *swoon*
Awwwww. So sweet.

I am definitely praying a lot for all of them. Thanks!!!

I forgot to mention it was a 4 yr relationship. I made it sound like they just dated in the last year. My head is spinning.
Again, I am so sorry for all involved. How tragic.

Thank you for the update. I was thinking about them earlier this evening. It is all so tragic. I have no words, but will continue to pray for his family and friends.

I already have planned this! My very first comment is planned though, and it is all about the Spartans beating the Wolverines! I'm guessing when I drop that bomb at DH's family's Thanksgiving dinner that the topic will quickly change to how much they hate State, that we cheated, how great U of M is, or something equally stupid. Political stuff GONE! LOL After 24 years I'm used to it. The last time State beat them they glared at me all through dinner. I looked up and said, "WHAT? Like its my fault your team sucks?" <---yes, this was really my quote.

Just in case you ohio people think I'm on your side. I do take Michigan's side for the big game! (btw, they really do suck this year so you're sure to win
We root for both MSU and UofM but when they play each other, it's Michigan all of the way. Sorry Hockeymom! :)

i read a commentary yesterday about why obama has bush to thank for being elected president...

but it's not what you think...

it's actually a no brainer, but i hadn't thought about it before..

the writer made the obvious point (though i hadn't thought of it) that what broke the ice for having a black president were President Bush's two black secretaries of state - powell and rice...

that that is what broke the ice...

i hadn't even thought of that for some reason..

the writer (who isn't a conservative or a republican) said that Bush was the first truly colorblind president since LBJ...

interesting that they're both Texans...

perhaps it's something about Texans...

anyway...

i hadn't thought about it before..

the writer said that all those people out there who think that Bush is just this side of satan should consider the fact that it was Bush who put blacks into the most senior position in the US government other than president - even higher than VP for all intents and purposes...

anyway.....it was an interesting commentary and something i hadn't thought of....
Great post. I was planning on googling all of the "firsts" when it comes to African Americans and politics. Aren't most of the "firsts" from the AA community in politics Republicans? I'll have to check on that.

As for Michael Steele - I am really beginning to like the guy.

One last question - where do you all get your news? I hate to say this, but I get most of it from you guys. I mentioned it before but I want to get a conservative newspaper or magazine for Christmas. Do you all get your news from online or in print?

Thanks all - again, wish me luck in the basement. Not sure if I'll be able to get out of there once I get started. :)

I disagree, but then I don't think the Republican Party has to go back so far to the right. Here is how I see this election year.

1. McCain ran a terrible campaign. One of the worst I have seen in a long time. I think he did better on the issues than Obama, but he didn't talk about them enough.

2. Obama ran a great campaign. He had a lot of help with that with the MSM because they would not look into some serious issues they should have, but still, I have to give him credit, he did run a great campaign.

3. Many people are still pissed at President Bush. At least some of the votes Obama got were not for him, nor were they against McCain, they were against Bush.

4. The economy tanked at the perfect time for Obama, and McCain made one bad decision there. He didn't look presidential while the situation floundered. The MSM made Obama look presidential with their spin instead of pointing out that what Obama did do was back away and let mommy and daddy handle it, in other words voting present on the solution. Because McCain didn't handle it well, he couldn't use it as an issue to beat him with.

Notice, none of these 4 points talks about Republican or Democrat values. And, even with the first 3 point, McCain was still ahead until point number 4 happened.

Do we need to get back to basics and get back to our values? Heck yes, but not in an exclusionary way. To try to fit all Republicans in a cookie cutter way really would be the death of the party.

We really are in a good position. All the pressure to perform is on the Democrats. They can no longer claim "well we wanted to fix it but the Republicans stopped us". I don't know about you, but the reason I AM a Republican is because I don't believe the policies of the Democrats work. I don't believe they have it right. We will now see. As a Republican, here are my predictions for the next 2 years:

1. The economy is going to get worse. I think we will see an increase in unemployment, an increase in inflation, and a stifling of the GDP. We will be in worse shape in October 2010 than we were in October 2008.

2. Our dependence on foreign oil will still be there. We will have moved very little on this issue from where we are now. We will still be "hoping" for someone to come up with a way for us to "change" this situation.

3. There will be some issues that will be passed, or attempted to be passed that are so far left that all moderates will be pissed about, including blue dogs. I think there is a lot of buyers regret going on now.

The Democrats have to perform now. If they don't, they have nothing to point to, to blame it on. And I don't think they can truly perform more than a circus side show, with lots of good phrases, lots of feel goods - nothing that will put food on the table or get anyone a job.

It's a real simple game plan to win in 2010. Take every Congressperson in office now (especially Democrats), show how they voted, and ask the folks "do you agree with this decision?". In 2010, we should stay completely away from saying good or bad, just this is what they did, do you agree? It's so simple I'm thinking of doing it here. Same way Obama was able to say "McCain voted 90% with George Bush" we will get to say "X voted 90% with Nancy Pelosi".

We believe what we believe. The people don't have a problem with our differences. They do have a problem when our candidates appear dishonest, and practice more Democratic values than Republican.

I agree with much of what you've said, but will add a couple of things.

1) First, this was going to be a bad year for Republicans no matter who ran. It is very rare for a party to hold the White House 3 terms in a row. The last time was Reagan-Reagan-Bush I. McCain came closer than I think any of the Republican field would have, and at 52-48, Obama did very well, but he did not give McCain a Mondale-style shellacking. Half the country did not want Barack Obama to be our next president, and of the half that voted for him, half of those voters were tepid in their support, pulling the lever on a wing and a prayer, and can be turned on a dime if the Obama presidency becomes the disaster it is so very likely to be.

2) Americans are good, decent people. Many voted for Barack Obama to close the book on America's racial strife, and they believe that in electing him that is what they have done. They gave a man with zero experience, zero track record, and some troubling ideas a chance, like it or not, because he's black and it offered a sense of national racial healing. The race hustlers like Jesse Jackson won't like it, and they'll try to bring the issue of race back again and again, but they have been put out to pasture. America's days of hand-wringing and self-flagellation for the sins of slavery, Jim Crow, so-called "institutionalized racism," etc., are behind her. This is one of those unintended consequences we often hear about, because Barack Obama got a lot of votes playing the race card, but that won't happen again. His election has forever and ever taken race and white guilt off the table. America has proven herself to be as near a color-blind society as the Western World has ever seen. In fact, now we get to say "Where are Europe's minority presidents? When will Europe finally confront its awful racist past? Why can't Europe be more like…the United States!"

3) I think President Obama and his democrat Congress will attempt MAJOR legislative changes in his first 2 years, because 2 years is probably all they're going to have before Congress is lost to the Republicans or at least before their huge majority is lost. I expect in the next 2 years: Universal health care; amnesty for 20 million or so illegals coupled with fast track citizenship (they MUST be able to vote by 2010!); massive, massive tax increases on all wage earners, from 40% at the bottom to 60% or more at the top (and the Obama media will produce fraudulent polls showing that the majority of Americans "wanted" these tax increases to "help their country"); massive tax increases on savings, 401K's, capital gains, etc.; some kind of forced "citizen corps" service, which will wind up in the Supreme Court; massive "green" and global warming taxation that will gut the manufacturing sector; the censorship (they call it "fairness") doctrine and federal "hate speech" laws which will essentially outlaw conservative talk radio all together, also headed to the Supreme Court; Card Check legislation which will allow labor unions to basically beat the crap out of anyone who doesn't vote to implement a union in her/her workplace; and some kind of national voter registration plan, probably tied to the Social Security Administration, so the democrats will have millions upon millions of more registrants to cast illegal ballots for in the future. In short, his legislative agenda in the first 2 years will be largely about securing a win in future elections for himself and other democrats, and raising taxes. That should make him very easy to beat.

3) So what are Republicans to do? I say frame every single political discussion around Civil Liberties. Take the Civil Liberties issue away from the left, which doesn't really believe in Civil Liberties at all (I mean, is there anything more oxymoronic than the ACLU?). On abortion, for example, let go of the religious arguments. Fight for viable late-term babies on Civil Liberties grounds. Fight Obama's forced "citizen corps" on Civil Liberties grounds. Fight the censorship doctrine (and please, please ALWAYS call it that as that is what it is) on Civil Liberties grounds. Fight universal health care on Civil Liberties grounds, that we want to pick our own doctors, hospitals, treatments, etc. Obama's presidency is going to be all about strengthening government control and limiting Civil Liberties. And dare I say it (oh, heads will explode)? Consider gay marriage as a Civil Liberties issue. Let the voters decide. The Republican Party has got to be about FREEDOM and keeping government OUT of people's lives. Freedom and individual liberty have ALWAYS been winners in the political arena. If the Republican Party can grab this issue, develop it, stay with it consistently, then the American people will come back to them as naturally as a dog off its leash runs as fast as it can away from its owner. If the Republicans can convince voters that they will be the democrat party's slaves (and if Harry, Nancy, and Obama have their way, they will be), and that the Republicans will set them free, then we win.

I think we have to get back to the basics. And for the Republicans that means going to the right. When we run centrist/moderate/left of center repubs we lose. Why put in a half-Demo when the real thing is running?
I agree that we have to get back to basics, but that also has to happen on an individual basis as well. McCain didn't win because McCain didn't run, in my opinion. He took on the believes of the people he "needed to" and left John McCain in the background. A Centrist Republican can win. A moderate Republican can win. Left of Center, I don't think so. But a Centrist Republican (where I would put McCain) can't win as a Left of Center Republican.

That is one reason why I choose the Republican Party, although I am a moderate. I don't believe Democrats respect differences. As long as you are diverse on THEIR level, or believe what THEY believe you have the freedom to do so. Change it just a little and you are a racist, hating piece of scum who deserves to be spit on, have crosses wripped out of your hand, your churches vandalized, your children demonized, etc., etc., etc.

I was thinking that I couldn't quote all of what you wrote, if you and I started doing this when we are both on an obvious contemplative frame of mind, we would have our own pages! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

But I thought I would take 3(a) and highlight it. I like the thinking behind it. I don't even think we would have to point it out to them. We would just have to say "this is how x voted on this issue".

I think the left is going to try to go way too far to the left, and that will be their downfall.

loco and wth>> Lots of great thoughts there. I especially like the civil liberties idea. I don't think I'm the only one that feels like I'm always having my rights and ideas taken away for the greater heathen.

Meghan'smommy>> Its ok.. I'm in a mixed marriage. (UofM/MSU) LOL Though, becuase of that, I've been to quite a few of their football games! I will admit my favorite, in person game was at the Big House, in 1997, Michigan v Ohio.

It can't decide if its snowing or raining around here. Hope everyone else's weather is better this weekend!

Hey, wouldn't it be funny to post a new thread on the CB titled "It's Obama's fault." And then when they click on it, the OP message says "Just practicing."
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I won't do it. But wouldn't it be funny? I soooo look forward to hearing "It's Obama's fault" over and over and over for the next 4 years. I'm gonna laugh by butt off everytime I say, errr, I mean hear it! ;)

LOL, the only way I would be able to watch this atrocity is, well, I can't post the pic because it might be too graphic for the DIS, but just under google images, type in 'clockwork orange eyes', you'll get it. ;)

Well, I guess it was a nice gesture....but if I went - I'd need to get all the barf bags from the plane and take 'em to the inauguration.

I think staying home is a smart move. :thumbsup2

Hi all! Just popping in to say I can't stick around, but I'll catch ya later :rotfl:

Geez Breezy, my stomach is growling. You leave the house without serving lunch first? :sad2:  I hope you'll make up for it at dinnertime.

i didn't read the article, but I had read somewhere that the Catholic Church cut off all funding for ACORN. Is that what it's about?

Yes it is. It got cut off last july if I'm remembering correctly. Seems they can't keep the books very well in addition to the political stuff.

I've only been in the Big House once - I'd love to go to another game. It was so much fun. Today I thought DH was going to throw something through the TV. Michigan isn't having a very good season this year.

I need to head back downstairs and finish the basement. I came up to find storage systems from Ikea, but it seems like everything I want is out of stock in the Ikea in Michigan. Maybe I'll give them a call on Monday before I drive down there.

G'day all...

One last question - where do you all get your news? I hate to say this, but I get most of it from you guys. I mentioned it before but I want to get a conservative newspaper or magazine for Christmas. Do you all get your news from online or in print?

I spend so much of my time in the car shuffling kids around from activity to activity...:drive: ...so I get most of my news from the radio, and I listen to a lot of talk radio.

That, and the internet. I don't watch any t.v. news, or read any papers or magazines. I do, however, look at the local papers online.

And with that...I'm off to pick up my kids. See y'all later.

I don't think the party needs to go Jerry Falwell-right but we do need to get back to our conservative roots.

As for Jesse Jackson going away, not gonna happen. Someone asked him what they thought about racism obviously gone for the most part and they said it wasn't over, that MO has slave blood but BO does not.  WTH does he want?!

Perfect! Thank you so much!

Just finished up dinner - now we're back to the basement. Can't I just light a match and be done with it? It's like a Lego/Barbie bomb went off down there. Scary stuff!

Oh, I know Jackson won't go away, but the American people are now completely over his schtick and all the other race hustlers' games. America elected a deeply unqualified president — the most inexperienced president we've elected in most people's lifetimes — and many of them voted for him as an act of racial contrition, to put their white guilt to rest once and for all. They won't be bullied and shamed a second time. Jesse Jackson knows this. That's why he's flailing around trying to find some kind of relevancy for himself. He won't find it. Again, the big unintended consequence of Barack Obama's win was that it was Jesse Jackson's loss — and it's a permanent loss. I mean, what's he gonna do — climb up on some stage with President Obama and start lecturing us about American racism? Puh-leeze. That dog don't hunt anymore. Game over, Jesse. Game over.
