The Conservative - Liberal Debate Thread

But you side wants to play the "What If" game about Iraq. That if we didn't go into Iraq, the Afghanistan situation would been solved. That if we didn't go into Iraq the world would love the US and there would be pease everywhere.

Can't have it both ways

I see more what if's being played on the other side. There are a lot of if's involved in getting done what everyone says needs to be done. I don't have a lot of faith in the Iraqi people who in my opinion have squandered their oppurtunity to be "free" - as soon as we leave that country will fold. Won't matter if it is 10 days from now or 10 years from now.

That's not such a problem because there isn't a fiscally literate electorate anymore.

Jas - as someone of like mind - what would be the first thing you would cut or change? Perhaps we can all find some common ground on items we think are a waste of money.

The point is, you are in a very small minority of the electorate. Most don't know and don't care. They will vote for all sorts of reasons but listening to planned policies and thinking through their economic consequences is not amongst them.

Hmmm I have to take some time and think.

There is IRS reform. First, I think these "rebates" from the government are a bunch of bunk, especially since people who haven't paid into the system can get some back as well. Second, the Earned Income Credit needs to go. Again people are getting back more than they paid in. No those aren't really measures to shrink the government, those are just issues I get my panties in a wad over. ;)

This mortgage bailout. What kind of crap is that?

I think the Department of Education is redundent with what is happening on the State level. I think that department can be greatly streamlined.

With food products there are a number of agencies with oversight. Streamline those as well. I would think the USDA could be absorbed by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of the Interior.

Basically, I'm all for shrinking buracracy whenever possible.

Oh another one near and dear to my heart...I wish the FAA would quit giving grants to airports all ready overcrowded, forcing airlines to use underserved airports. This alone would free up transportation money with regard to the FAA and the DOT, because people could use the airports closest to them rather than driving out of their way to another with better service.

Now of course there is the war. But that's not really waters I want to tread in now. We put ourselves there and I think it a diservice to get out leaving that place worse off than it was before.

Socially Liberal/Fiscally Conservative is an oxy-moron. All that terms means is you like a lot of government programs so you need taxes to be high so as to cover all your spending programs. That is NOT being fiscally conservative. It seems that most people that label themselves in this manner only want to be fiscally conservative on military spending.

Um, no it doesn't. It means you want the government spending to be curbed - you want pork projects abolished, but you also understand the need for social programs.

I'm sure you'll disagree - your bias is more then well known.

Excellent definition! :)

The only add-on I would tack on to social programs is....... 'that are efficiently run and managed'. FEMA is a glaring example of "don't let this happen to you".

FEMA needs to be removed from the Department of Homeland Security. Actually the whole DHS can be done away with, but that was our grand answer to September 11. Such a shame. It's created more problems than it has solved along with creating yet another layer of bureaucracy.

DING! DING! DING! DING!

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN - MAY I PLEASE DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION TO AN ISSUE THAT BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE CAN AGREE UPON.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION!

And let's see - whose grand idea was the DHS... that would be the Dems.

This taken from the official .gov website;

DHS was created by the Department of Homeland Security Act of 2002, and is an outgrowth of the Office of Homeland Security established by President George W. Bush after Sept. 11, 2001

So I guess that would be absolutely wrong.
