I'm sorry if this was posted already. I did a quick scan and didn't see it.

So they had a heads up less than an hour prior to the attack that a gator was in the area, the CMs have been worried about gators and they knew that the bungalow guests were feeding the gators. If guests paying $2000 a night want to feed the gators, Be Our Guest. Oy. Not good Disney.

Oh ok...I'll reiterate that not EVERYTHING in Disney requires an acronym.

They pull them outta there...out of the Castle moats (when they had them...before they filled them in for fastpasses...then decided they couldn't pay $9 an hour to control the mob)...

World showcase lagoon? Pulled them out of there too...

Ft wilderness? The "sassagoula"? Yep. Crescent lake?

The point is the same: it's a swamp/wildlife preserve where the armored residents predate us by many thousands of years...yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

But apparently nobody knew before Tuesday.

Did anyone catch the Florida F&W agent say "we have an open agreement with WDW...and they have an aggressive control program in place..."

Anyone think about exactly what it means?

Sarcasm isn't really needed. I said ON the island, not in the surrounding waters. And when I'm on mobile i will use an abbreviation for as much as possible

They typically relocate to a less populated area of the property, not kill. At least that's what I was told when on one of the tours.

I was at WDW a week ago. On the boat ride to Disney Springs the pilot said he is asked all the time about alligators. He responded that when they find them they are relocated. So it clearly was a common subject.

See...to me...that sounds a lot like an acknowledgement that they catch/kill/move around so many that's it's a constant thing (it is)...and that in typical Disney style there are no radio calls, no reports, no real identification of what is being done by a public agency...

And why? Because till this week it would have been considered "bad show"...and all that stuff was designed to go on "back stage"...

...that is consistent with the corporation i know...

if the info in those articles is accurate, it is very unfortunate that those warnings were not taken more seriously. as for guests feeding alligators, that should never have been permitted but how do you monitor it 24/7? on the other hand, i simply cannot understand these people who allow their kids in that water. the articles said that lawyer's 5 year old was in calf deep water. i would have never let my kid near that water for so many reasons. the alligator threat is serious no matter where in florida you are. i remember an incident years ago where a child was visiting a grandparent at a senior condo and he was fishing in the pond when an alligator grabbed him by the arm. don't even get me started on how many times i've read about dogs being attacked over the years when too close to the water. between the snakes, alligators, amoebas and just plain icky brackish water, i am really surprised by the people who are going into the water. it sounds like disney is trying to react quickly now with the signage and fencing after this horrific tragedy. it will take a lot to be thorough about getting the message across to everyone about these dangers due to the size and nature of the property. what about the campgrounds? also what about non disney property? will there be more public info put out there about this threat across the state. i just hope this kind of thing never happens again but that is probably naive because horrible stuff happens. this also got me started thinking about all of the shark attacks we are hearing about this year both on florida beaches and elsewhere. there have been quite a few but unless we don't go in the water how do we totally avoid the risk. i guess we can't . still feel so sad for this family.

I think these articles - especially the headlines- are designed to make Disney look like they were ignoring a problem. However, in the first article it says something like...when gators are sighted, the CMs call in wildlife control and they take care of it.

I'll admit that the nonchalant attitude of one of the CMs about it being like a pet doesn't look good. But, I'm sure that no one would have thought twice about it until this happened. I've seen people on this board discussing "affectionately" about a gator that was hanging around BCV - it even had a name - and that it hadn't been seen and it was missed, etc.

People who don't live around alligators my be more sensitive to them but those that do, consider them a nuance, not so much a danger. Obviously Disney considered them a nuance or they would have taken the negative PR hit and installed more descriptive warning signs and relocated all alligators and not just the ones that encroached on guest areas.

I agree...

This is trying to defend lack of common sense and judgement by some of the travelers...by blaming the Walt Disney company for buying and building a complex in a natural habitat that about a billion people have entered for 45 years.

It can't just be a mistake/accident...by both parties...but that is exactly what it is.

I don't think anyone is saying they shouldn't have bought the land. Every year, week, day, things change. Nature changes, the property changes, people in charge change, etc. With those changes certain precautions should have been implemented. Especially after the other attack in the 80s. Once that attack occurred the threat of alligators atleast warranted a sign and fencing.
