As some of you know we have a Magical Gathering planned for July for all our children, their spouses and grandchildren. Our children range in age form 7-30! Only the youngest three knew - it was a surprise Christmas present for the rest.

Two of our children are married, one is in law school and one is a senior in college. We told the oldest ones that we had a surprise planned for Christmas Eve - we told them to wear "good clothes" (unfortunately with sons you still have to tell them this!) and made it sound like the present would be big - so to make room in their cars to take it home.

The older kids were wild with curiosity - some thought it was a surprise family portrait, some thought we were going to tell them we were moving, one thought we had bought them all big screen tvs - and one (hoping) asked if we won the lottery! One thought a famous person or tv crew was coming to our house. It was insane.

We had personalized Disney invitations printed - saying they were invited to a once in a lifetime, all expenses paid Disney Family Magical Gathering. It gave the dates and where we were staying (YC). We put them in frames and wrapped them. In the same bags we had scrolls made that we tied with ribbons giving the details of the trip - MYW packages tickets (explanations) dining plan (explanations) telling them we were paying for their airfare the giving them spending money, and giving them their room arrangements.

We told them all to be there at 4:00. I had appetizers ready since some had to work until 4:00. At 4:30 everyone was finally there. We had them seated in the family room (picture perfect - fireplace going etc.). We gave out the bags with the instructions that no one would open them until we said (wanted everyone to open at the same time). Ready, set, go - open. It was magical. Of course I knew my oldest dd (30) would cry because she always wanted to take her two ds but couldn't afford it yet. I was really surprised how excited my older ds's were. In the past few years they've done study abroads in Europe so I didn't know if Disney would do it for them but they were thrilled. We gave them other bags with Disney guide books, Disney planning videos, Disney polo shirts, and tshirts for the kids that say their names with "Magical Memories 2008" printed on the back. Of course almost all the presents were Disney related - including lots of Disney dollars!

No one could believe that the three youngest had known about the surprise since September and were able to keep the secret.

It may be have the best present we have ever given them but it was definitely the best present for ME to be able to do this for our family. Everyone was so excited and can't wait to start planning. I think they thought I was nuts when I told them I need to do our ADRs in January so start reading and give me a list of some of the places they think they would like to try.

Thanks to all who have followed our "surprise sage". It truly was a magical night for our family.

Robyn, that is just awesome. :wizard: What a fun gift to be able to give. :goodvibes

Enjoy the planning.

Your Christmas sounded like it was just simply magical. What a wonderful gift to give your family. Now the fun begins with all the planning.:yay:

That is so beautiful.. I was crying as I read it. I can just image all of the crying and screaming going on. What a wonderful Christmas.

I can imagine that the excitement in the room after the bags were opened was incredible!! What an incredible gift and I wish you the best in getting the ADRs you all want. :goodvibes

we told them to wear "good clothes" (unfortunately with sons you still have to tell them this!)

I almost gave myself a tea enema when I read that! My two ds's are still young but I don't doubt your statement. :)

Oh what a wonderful gift you are giving your family! Have a wonderful time sharing and creating new memories that will last a lifetime!

WOW! I just read your story aloud to DH and we both got a little "verklempt"

Amazing and I wish you the best trip!;)

*** I am tearing-up ... I loved it --- I bet planning was so much fun ...;)
Have a wonderful time

I think what you are doing for your family is wonderful and the way you surprised them was great! I'm so glad for you that your youngest children were able to keep your secret.

Would you adopt me?

I just wanted to say that my dad did the same thing for his kids/grandkids a few months after my mom died. He decided "life is too short" to postpone things, and so...he paid for us all to stay in concierge suites at GF, and treated the kids and grandkids to anything and everything you could imagine. We ate at the best restaurants and didn't deny the kids anything (according to grandpa, a Mickey Bar is a perfectly acceptable lunch!)

We had a great trip and will remember it forever...it was the first WDW trip for all four grandchildren, and is a special memory for all of them.

I'm sure your kids and grandkids will love and appreciate it as much as we did.

Robyn, I have been looking for this update!! I just knew they would be so excited and I have been excited for you all. There is just so much to do there and something for everyone. Congratulations on pulling off one of the very best Christmas presents I have ever heard of!!!!

Robyn I was crying as I read aloud today. We are doing the same thing for our family, we will be at the CR in Sept. 08. The difference is our kids knew we had this planned, just no other details.
We decided to buy park tickets for all of them, 5 kids, 3 are married, 6 grandchildren. Since our trip is coming up we wanted to give the tickets as Christmas presents. We have a lot of family here now so it didn't seem appropiate to give them their tickets in front of everyone. We had a big dinner December 1st, all they knew was they were getting their Christmas gift that day. We were peppered with questions. My favorite one was did we buy a DVC? They also thought we had won a lottery, or we were taking a cruise. So when we were asked repeatedly we said you will have to wait and get Pixie Dusted. The anticiapation was very high, they ate and then everyone got very quiet. We had Disney ornaments that you can take the top off and we put the tickets in there and put that in a box wrapped up. We also had some personalized paperwork with what was included and what they will be responsible for. They will just need to figure out their own way there to Florida and back. We explained we would give them a food allowance. We will be attending MNSSHP and will do a dinner at Chef Mickeys, and we will pick up the tab for all of that ( we also have a trick or two up our sleeves).;) If they want to do a special dinner with their own family they can arrange with the concierge to do that. We had stayed at the Cr in Oct. and they were nice enough to give us some folders (5) with the park information and maps and such. The older kids have not stayed concierge level before so we included the food offerings and stuff. They were speechless. They loved it all. They also had some presents to take home to open yesterday, they all got Birnbaums 08 book and a Hidden Mickey book, a little Disney notebook and Disney pens to keep track of any reservations. My husband and I were just in Disney for the Christmas party and we bought them all the snowman throws that you could buy if you spend $50 or more. So now they are really excited. I may have to steal your ideas for the videos and Disney dollars though.
The whole reason we are doing this is we are celebrating our 35th anniversary. We didn't want to wait until 50. Our kids range in age from 34 -20. This has been so exciting to plan and anticipate. It is wonderful how Disney can really make everyone feel the magic.
Good luck to you!:yay: :santa:

What a wonderful thing!!! It brought tears to my eyes! I hope you and your family have a wonderful trip with memories that will last a lifetime :goodvibes

That is very similar to how my parents surprised us two years ago. (I'm 39 btw lol) how special!!! If you are like my Mom and Dad, the fun was in the giving of it. Have a great trip!!!!

What a fantastic present! Please adopt me....LOL!! I hope you and your family have a wonderful time. :goodvibes
