SO what are your Chanukah Plans. What are you going to make for your CHanukah Meal? Does anyone have recipes to share?

My family celebrates Christmas, but I just wanted to drop in & wish you a Happy Chanukah!!!

My DH is Jewish and I am not. We don't do much for Chanukah. We light the candles and that is really it. We do the whole Christmas thing.

Happy Chanukah! As a kid, I looked forward to seeing the menorahs in the neighborhood and the promise of potato pancakes with dinner (my mom's nod to our neighbors)!

Seems strange that it's late this year.

Our best friends are Jewish, we Catholic. Our two families have, for many years, alternated homes each year, to celebrate and share our very own Chanumas, a blend of traditions, foods, etc of Chanukah and Christmas. It's great. :goodvibes My favorite dish from 'their side' is the raisin noodle kugel and also a bite or so of mandel Bread. :cool1: The Challah bread is great too. :flower: Why is all the good stuff so high in carbs? :confused3

A very Happy Chanukah season to all who celebrate.

We are going to have two celebrations really - the first on the 25th will be with my husband's family. I'm not sure what my MIL is going to do except it will be chaotic and loud and my niece and nephew will drive me crazy. That's when my kids will get their primary gifts.

The next day DH and I will come home and the kids will stay in NY probably until Friday. DH and I will probably light candles and that's it until Friday.

On Friday, our friends that we always spend New Year's with will arrive and we are having a combination Shabbot/Chanukah dinner with chicken soup, challah, turkey, potato latkes, apple sauce, brocolli, maybe some farfel stuffing and gravy and jelly donuts for dessert. I have little gifts (musical Chanukah yo-yo's) for all the kids. I'm hoping DH will make the trip to kosher grocery store and buy the traditional "donuts", but other than that, everything will be home made. I'm really looking forward to this one.

This weekend I made the chicken soup and latkes - 10#s of potatoes! :earseek: :earseek:

I hope you have a great Chanukah!!

Well Chabad is holding a big event at Universal Citywalk.

I am thinking about going to eat, the local Jewish Deli is open! Then go to citywalk.

And I think I'm doing a good job just making latkes! :rotfl:

I get to go home and be with my family!

I really do need to finish shopping... we exchange a present a night with eachother (my sister and I split my parents).

My sister is already home from school and they decorated the house in blue stars and silver snowflakes (like always).

My mom already has latkes (store bought but maybe I can convince her to make more) and is an awesome cook so I bet she will have lots of food.

New years we are having my aunt and my grandma sleep over and I am going to ask a new guy in my life to come visit. :cool1:

We (me and friends) will be in Disney 1/3-1/11 where is the Deli????? We are bringing food with us because of the Kosher issue

I, too, am not Jewish but just wanted to wish my friends here on the DIS a Happy Chanukah!

I'm starting Chanukah early. Tonight I am making two kinds of latkes. Salmon and potato. My DD7 specifically asked for potato latkes for dinner tonight. Will serve both latkes with sour cream and probably a simple salad as a side dish. I laso have some overripe bananas in the house, so maybe I'll make some banana pudding for desert (or try to find a good recipe for banaba fritters in keeping with the oil thing.)

I won't do a big meal until the final night..Once all the Christmas stuff is gone. I'll probably make Brisket,Challah,Latkes,Suganoit and some sort of Kugel..Not sure which kind yet.I'd love a good kugel recipe if anyone has one

I am not Jewish, but wanted to wish everyone a Happy Chanukah and a peaceful season to all.

I am attending "Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Night", an annual "Christmas" event held in a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. There is a 7 course Chinese dinner (What else?) and then entertainment by 3 Jewish comedians.
This is the 13th year of the event so it is celebrating its bar/bat mitzvah.

My DH is Catholic and I'm Jewish so we are doing the whole Christmas Hanukkah thing this year. I kept threatening to have Ham and Latkes for dinner on December 25 :)

I think we will have a Christmas dinner on the 25th and then do a Hanukkah dinner a day or so later-brisket, Kugel, and latkes. Yum

We always had brisket on the last night when I was young; this year, Fencer asked me to cook whatever my family's traditional Christmas Eve meal was instead of doing his family's "Thanksgiving-esque" holiday dinner. Since we always got pizza or Chinese for Christmas in my house--I'm just moving the brisket over to Christmas this year. ;)

I'll post my kugel recipe when I get home tonight...

Apple Kugel

4 matzo sheets
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
2 apples - peeled, cored and cubed
1/2 cup raisins

1. Preheat the oven to 350. Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish. Break the matzo sheets into pieces, and soak in a bowl of water until soft. Drain in a colander, mashing to squeeze the water out.

2. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, salt, sugar, oil and cinnamon. Add the soaked matzo, and mix well. Fold in the apples and raisins. Spoon into the prepared baking dish, and spread evenly.

3. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until nicely browned and apples are tender.

Iam Jewish, and so are my children, my husband was raised Catholic. Although, he doesnt attend church now.Growing up, I had 2 Jewish parents. I dont remember my mother making anything special for Hanukkah. We always had a Hanukkah party with the other family members. Some years we did it on Christmas because that is the day everybody had off.

After we had kids, we do Hanukkah and Christmas, more focus on Hanukkah. My kids attend Jewish Sunday school every week for 2 hrs. This past Sunday they had a Hanukkah party there, where they painted Driedels, ate Latkes and donuts. This coming weekend, Christmas Eve, we will go to dinner at my friends house. The night of Christmas(first night of Hanukkah)we will go to a Potluck dinner at the Synagogue and celebrate with them there. My kids ge the best of both worlds.
I do not make latkes at home because they are so darn good and fattening LOL. Seeing that Im on Weight Watchers again, they are too tempting to have at home.
