The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Oh it’s a happy day

I asked for Merrily tickets for my bday and I AM SEEING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG IN NOVEMBER AHHHHHHHHHHH

apparently it’s not too bad of a queue. It paused a couple times according to my mom.

And the matinees were slightly cheaper and more available, but I hope this helps out some others! Don’t give up!

Anyone here see Chicago with Bebe Neuwirth and Anne Reinking?

That was such an awesome performance!

Could go either way, I don’t predict the reviewers very well. The times guy used to hate everything and lately hasn’t been as harsh. But they were so harsh with KPOP it closed in week!

I think it will get mixed to positive if I had to guess.

The press goes after opening now as a principal member is out till opening which is in the 23rd. But I’ll be waiting to hear what they say!
The reviews are in and basically they all hate it. Some go to a bit more moderate, but generally the critic's consensus seems to be: Bad Cinderella is aptly named. It is too much, too confusing, too vulgar, and why does everyone call her bad Cinderella?

The reviews do give us some good puns, 'gay-us ex machina' is one pun I would like to use in real life some day.

Interesting. I do agree with some of that, the plot was a bit all over the place. But I enjoyed the music, and now my daughter wants to see it, so unless it closes very soon I’ll probably take her and I’ll be explaining everything haha!

I will say I absolutely hate to see a show get a bad review! I’ll be interrelated to see what happens, as there are so many new shows on, how fast will this close!

It could become cult, but cult usually works best in small theaters where they know they shouldn't take themselves seriously. I can see an audience dressed up as the characters and singing along etc. Think Rocky Horror Picture Show.

But don't think ALW will like that.

I will say this about ALW: He 100% made the right decision to be with his son and I’m glad everyone is respecting that (love hate or neutral on the show his son is innocent in all this) and I wish his son peace during this time. His video mentioned hospice, so I hope for his sake if it is in fact end of life hospice it is peaceful.

I think that the press didn't mention it because the press didn't attend opening night. They attended previews in the week leading up to the opening night and published it the moment the embargo was over.

They might have missed the first message about the son and the second about the hospice.

I think if they knew there would be a remark about how ALW would miss the opening night, and maybe some less harsh remarks about the music and the musical in general. Some reviews were brutal. Several mention how ALW treated the London cast.

Press hasn’t attended opening night in a long time. They usually attend right after the freeze (when a show makes no changes prior to opening. Usually after a while they start changing and what not or even just tweaking stuff. Sometimes it’s just as simple as the lighting needs to be updated)

I believe his first message was a statement. Second I know was a video as I saw it and that’s how I found out how bad it really is regarding his son.

I’m just again very glad no one has taken it out on his son. The internet and world can be a cruel place. And I’m grateful people recognize the gravity of the situation.

And I feel horrible for both casts Broadway and London. Broadway doesn’t deserve this hate a vitriol (actors are only doing their job. They can’t control what they sing and say). And what happened in London was abysmal (tho apparently a line in his letter to closing now makes more sense as it most likely regards said son). Just abysmal.

Or they forgot ALW has a son, because the only ex-wife people talk about is Sarah Brightman.

No, but it's my dream to jump in a time machine to go back in time and see it! I sometimes pull up the Tony clip of their performance. Looks amazing.

I'm super excited to see the all black, all female cast performance of 1776 this weekend in Denver!

Papermill announced there season, and I’m not sure what to think!

I love beautiful but I saw it twice on Broadway with an amazing cast. So I may pass on that one, I love Fiddler so I’ll be excited for that, I haven’t seen After Midnight and don’t know much about it or Gun & Powder.

I am surprised they went with Fiddler for December that’s usually a more kid centric show and while it is kid appropriate I don’t see my kids being drawn to it like the sound of music of Cinderella. I’ll probably go with a 4 show plan again this year.

Also looks like all musicals, which is a bit surprising as well.

Speaking of Fiddler, has anyone seen the version of "Fiddler on the Roof" that was all in Yiddish? Apparently, it played on Broadway a few years ago. Then, due to demand, they brought it back just for a 6 week run a few months ago, but this time it played off Broadway. I heard it was very good and moving. Wish I could have seen it.

I thought that was an odd time too. I would have thought spring or summer for it. Somehow, fighting the wind chill to get to the theatre, then watching a fiddler on a roof, would make me feel chilly all over again. :cold: :lmao:

@Gracedis1 alerted us last week that it was Broadway Week on The Today Show. :thumbsup2

They posted a couple more clips.

Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond perform "This Is Not Over Yet" from Parade:

Ben did an interview later in the show:
