The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Planning a trip up to NYC to see Parade in April! Currently have tickets for Parade, Camelot, and Bad Cinderella. I figure even if Bad Cinderella is a train wreck, it'll at least be an experience. :)
I have one more show slot open, and I'm not sure if I should buy a ticket in advance or try for rush/lottery on Thursday. I'd love to see A Beautiful Noise but I hate it when people sing along at shows and I can't imagine there won't be singing. Also semi-interested in Kimberly Akimbo and &Juliet and Some Like it Hot, and a little bit interested in seeing Hadestown or Wicked on Broadway since I've only ever seen them on tour. So many choices!

Saw the Into the Woods tour last night at the Kennedy Center - it was fantastic! Sebastian Arcelus was out so that was a bummer - I really wanted to see him and Stephanie play together, but what can you do. Gavin Creel was hilarious too, though Little Red may have been my favorite - Katy Geraghty. If you can catch the tour go for it! That Milky White puppet and how they integrate the puppeteer into the show - fantastic. (also am I the only one who thinks that Into the Woods is like 30 minutes too long?)
Kimberly Akimbo is a really sweet show with some great acting. Some Like It Hot is a whirlwind of musical theatre. Dance heavy and some cool staging done.

Are you guys aware that on the first night of previews for Parade neo-nazis stood out front of the theatre to protest?

Here is a local news clip where the reporter spoke to the cast about it.

Ugh I saw this how incredibly sad and disturbing!

Agreed. Especially since both Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry have updated the book and score every time new things come out about the case.

It’s absolutely disturbing and heartbreaking. Very worried for them and Leopoldstat

I was there that night. They were yelling at us as we were on line to get into the theater. They were trying to hand out pamphlets as well.

Both DS and I are so excited, and I knew people here would understand. He's going to be playing in the orchestra pit for "Aladdin" this week. Ever since he moved to NYC several years ago, his ultimate goal was playing in a Broadway Musical. This year he got to sub in a few, as well as subbing in the Rockettes Christmas Show a bunch of times. But now he's got, as far as Mom's concerned, the ultimate-a Disney Musical! Hope all goes well!

Almost forgot I finally saw phantom! I was prepared to hate it, everyone kept telling me I would be bored and wouldn’t enjoy it, but I loved it!

No idea! I loved it! But people kept telling me I wouldn’t like it….obv these people don’t know me at all!

Phantom opened here around the same time period as Les Miserable. Lots of people bashed Andrew Lloyd Webber, his then wife, and the show as not being as musically "sophisticated" as Les Mis. :snooty:

I saw both shows right after they opened. Les Mis has it's own set of problems. Yet, I love both. For me, there really isn't a competition.

I'm glad you saw it before it finally closes.

Anyone here near Broadway who has seen Bad Cinderella yet? It's closed now in London (nearest to me), but lately I have been bingewatching MickeyJoTheatre on youtube, and his videos on the journey of Bad Cinderella in London... wow. Makes me want to go to Broadway to see it for myself! :D

(might have already watched a bootleg on Youtube ;-) )

I actually saw it last night!

I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. It was not my fav ever, but the music was good and the acting was on point. I didn’t love some aspects of the story, almost like it wasn’t flushed out, but I did like it.

What do you think, will the US reviewers like it?
One of the drama in London was that at one point a US reviewer came by, didn't like it, and that ticked off Andrew Lloyd Webber, to say it mildly.

Could go either way, I don’t predict the reviewers very well. The times guy used to hate everything and lately hasn’t been as harsh. But they were so harsh with KPOP it closed in week!

I think it will get mixed to positive if I had to guess.

The press goes after opening now as a principal member is out till opening which is in the 23rd. But I’ll be waiting to hear what they say!

This has been a week for theatre for me! I saw Jagged Little Pill on tour here in DC - that's an intense show! I won the lottery but the ticket was rear mezzanine on the extreme side, so not as good as I was hoping but for $30 I'll take it. Heidi Blickenstaff was amazing, and so was the actor who played Jo - so good! I also liked seeing Chris Hoch because he was the Gaston I saw when I saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway back in 2007 (a week before it closed). So fun!

Then Friday my husband and I saw "Into the Woods" on tour at the Kennedy Center. I saw it two weeks ago, right after Sebastian Arcelus hurt his foot so he was out for two weeks, and I really wanted to see him and Stephanie J Block (his real life wife) together as the Baker and the Baker's Wife. But of course, as things go - we got there and Stephanie J Block was out. Still super fun to see Sebastian on. But in my effort to see Sebastian and Stephanie together, I bought a rush ticket for yesterday night and third time's the charm - I got to see them both go on! That's such a good production - if you get the chance, go see it. The Milky White puppet and puppeteer especially are awesome. And Gavin Creel is fantastic as the prince, and of course Sebastian and Stephanie - amazing. Highly recommend.

I also finalized the shows for our Broadway trip in a few weeks - Camelot, Bad Cinderella, Parade, and then for my last slot, I bought into the hype and bought tickets for Shucked! Can't wait. :D

Did anyone see the company of Bad Cinderella on the Today Show? I really liked the song they performed. My daughter's favorite Disney movie was Cinderella when she was a kid so we are going to make a trip to see it (she is 19 now). I'm not a critical person in general so I'm not worried about the bad reviews.
