The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Another semi-related entertainment note:

The Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights 2021 opens today. It is an ALL outdoor, walk-through experience. So, far the weather has been pretty mild. Hope it stays that way for this.

It runs now through Jan 9. 2022. BTW, sunset right now is around 4:30-ish.

Here's their video from last year, but the displays & events are pretty similar.

We just saw Phantom of the Opera and wow! So good! We had two understudies - the Phantom AND Christine. They were both excellent, though, so I was not disappointed in the least! We had the best seats I've ever had, 2nd row center.

I have to plan our next show now. I"m hoping we can see Aladdin. I have to check if it's showing.

Congrats! 2nd row center is fabulous!

Tonight, at 6:30, Broadway theatres will dim their lights to pay homage to the great composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who died last week at age 91.

R.I.P. Mr. Sondheim. :sad1: Thank you for all the great shows. ❤

I saw a few shows this weekend - Company, Flying Over Sunset, Baby, and Waitress.

I'll just say, if you have a chance to see Company, DO IT. It's a partially gender-swapped version where a woman plays Bobbie and everything from the staging to the choreography to the sets to the performances are brilliant. Katrina Lenk playing Bobbie is absolutely a revelation. One of my favorite shows I've ever seen out of hundreds.

MJ The Musical…………….

OH MY GOODNESS!!! This show was OUTSTANDING!
Prediction…..Tony’s for:
MJ
Scenic Design
Lighting
Choreography
And come on, when are they gonna make a category for best Ensemble?!? These folk were on FIRE!

Still only in previews and will definitely see it again 👍🏾

Covid cases have shutdown various Broadway & Off-Broadway shows this week and especially today. :(

https://deadline.com/2021/12/broadw...r-the-cursed-child-aint-too-proud-1234891577/

If you are driving in or taking a train and just coming in mainly for the show, check to see if your show is actually performing that night. If you are flying in, have back up plans in place for the night. Omicron cases make up 13% of the cases in the NY/NJ regions, the most in the U.S. according to the CDC The Coronavirus positivity rate in NJ is at 11.58%. CT is at 7.15% and NY is at 5.57%. NYS or NYC seems to have a new mandate every day. :headache: Everyone continue to stay safe.

If you guys have a canceled Broadway show, think about this as a possible alternative:

Just got back from the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights display. We LOVED it. It's all outdoors. Got there around 5pm. Saw sunset from the #2 subway train, which is above ground there. Walked 2 blocks west, followed the big road sign that pointed toward the Bronx Zoo. (There's a pedestrian walkway next to the road.) Someone told us the gate was right beyond the underpass. :thumbsup2

It wasn't that crowded around that time. Even at it's most crowded, it was only in certain areas. We walked, ate, walked some more. Saw ice carving. There was also some trivia contests about animals, which kids really liked. There's a carousel ride, stilt walkers and costumed characters. Towards the end, we looped back for s'mores.

The weather was perfect at about 59 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be about the same weather.

The Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall cancelled today, too. Some audience member were already sitting in their seats for the 11am show when the announcement came. :(

Edited to add:

The Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes has been cancelled completely for the rest of the entire 2021 season. :sad1:

“We regret that we are unable to continue the Christmas Spectacular this season due to increasing challenges from the pandemic. We had hoped we could make it through the season and are honored to have hosted hundreds of thousands of fans at more than 100 shows over the last seven weeks," a statement read. "We have loved bringing back this cherished tradition that helps usher in the holiday season in New York City and look forward to welcoming fans back to Radio City Music Hall in 2022.”

I feel so bad for all the shows and businesses that are having to reduce hours or cancel/close altogether again. This is not what I hoped for this holiday season.

Those zoo lights look like they would be incredible!

OMG, I heard about this on the news last night. Just awful, in addition to the cancelled broadway shows. I’m a local and haven’t seen the Radio City show in years, but feel so bad for the tourists here, and of course for all of the performers and support crew now out of work. Such a terrible hit to the city. Again. Ugh, this pandemic... :guilty:

I loved the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights too! Really beautiful display. We are frequent zoo visitors and saw it last year, also on a clear and mild evening.

Another amazing event, if tickets are still available, (also in the Bronx and very close to the zoo) is the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Gardens. Highly recommend that as well. And I have not seen it, but they also now have an outdoor nighttime light show there called Glow. (Train show is inside in the main conservatory.) Check their website, nybg.org, for info.

That's awful about the Rockettes. Once a week I introduce a new show to my students and Friday we learned about the Christmas Spectacular, just hours before the 2021 season was canceled 😭

A total of ten Broadway shows, nearly a third of the 32 currently running, have canceled performances due to COVID. Also some off-Broadway shows have canceled too. :sad1:

Playbill Vice President and COO Alex Birsh said, "What you're seeing right now is the system actually working brilliantly because every show is testing non-stop. Because of that, we're obviously seeing cancellations, but we're not seeing a whole cancellation of Broadway,"

The Broadway League launched a website, bwaytoday.com, where theatergoers can get up-to-date information on performances and cancellations.

The Lion King has now canceled performances through Sunday. performances will resume Monday at 2pm. :sad1:

And that's IF the cast and crew test negative. I doubt that will happen as so many people will be traveling and gathering with loved ones over the holiday weekend and some WILL get COVID. :sad2:

Jagged Little Pill closed forever last Friday. Producers said, "In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead this winter [. . .] we've made the difficult decision to close our doors."

Some other shows:

Harry Potter & the Cursed Child, Aladdin and Hadestown are closed through Christmas.

MJ and Hamilton are closed until Dec 27.

Again, the Broadway League launched a website, bwaytoday.com, where theatergoers can get up-to-date information on performances and cancellations.
Or go to this link if the above doesn't work. Same webpage:

I have tickets to see The Music Man at the end of January and I'm getting very nervous.

If things are anything like last year, the end of January will probably fine again here in NYC.

Last year, everyone was warned: Do NOT travel, do NOT gather together, as COVID will spike. Many people didn't care. We live in a culture which does not understand delayed gratification, putting off pleasure and things we want to do for a better, sometimes later time. The COVID infection rate here in NYC metro area peaked again and stayed high until about mid-January, when everyone was back home again and all those infected got better or died. (This was before vaccinations & the testing availability we have now.) The infection rate kept going down after that. Late January was a lot better than November, December and early January. It probably will be again.
