The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

We ended up seeing Psycho during it's closing performance instead of Friday as originally planned. I think it was an entertaining show and something that the entire cast and crew should be proud of. However, I think it is one of those shows that should have stayed off Broadway or as a limited engagement with a big name in the lead role. I love Benjamin Walker, poor guy can't catch a break, but the show really needed something to get butts in the seats. I'm shocked it didn't survive a full season though. I love how they handled the gore and thought the show was pretty well done. It isn't the best thing I've ever seen but it isn't trash either.

Has anyone watched the James Corden Carpool Karaoke from last night? I thought it was pretty good. I loved the moment around 3:56...

I was coming here to see if anyone else saw it! lol One Day More just killed me! Gotta love theatre people! Side note - I love seeing Jane Krakowski on this. She grew up in our town and her mom & I used to get our nails done together every other week! She would tell me what Jane was up to and I would tell her about my DD hoping to major in theatre. (she did and now is at Disney!)

Saw West Side Story Sunday at Paper Mill. Really do love the show. Cast was decent, but no one really "blew me away" except Anita, who was excellent. Maria looked more Asian than Puerto Rican, then I saw in the playbill she had played Mulan & Jasmine on Disney Cruise Line! lol She would be good in Miss Saigon. Lovely voice.

Really want to get back to see She Loves Me again. Did you see Laura Benanti's explanation of the Tony nominated shows? Priceless.

I agree One More Day was great too! I just found the reaction really funny!

I'm seeing West Side Story next week, I'm pretty excited about it! More because it's a night of theater less then 15 minutes from me with usually good performers.

I'm going to google the Laura Benanti video tonight.

OMG!!! :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: That was brilliant! I loved One Day More. Les Mis is one of my all time favorite Broadway shows. And that song is one of my favorite. Their rendition of it was so much fun and so campy and funny, I'm in tears.

Interesting, because I've heard that Marin Mazzie is stunning as Anna. There are calls on the BWW forums for the best replacement Tony to be reintroduced for her!

I didn't see these productions, but I've seen both shows in Australia in recent years (South Pacific was a copy of the Lincoln Centre production though) and I thought South Pacific was a much better show and worked better for a modern audience.
That woman could sing the phone book and it would be amazing. I love her!

I loved when Jesse kept giving Jane the cold shoulder (talk to the hand Jane!). It was so funny. And OMG can Audra sing!! I was also completely stoked at Corden's ripping through the Hamilton lyrics... especially Lafayette's crazy rap. That was awesome.

So yesterday the Hamilton presale tickets went onsale for jan-may. I was helping a friend try to get some to use in an auction and we did manage to get 4 tickets but I think it is criminal that even at the box office price 4 seats (not even in the first 10 rows) cost 3,600.00.

Were those the AMEX "premium" seats??

Who is looking forward to Dear Evan Hansen? I know it's a while away, December. But I've heard such good things and didn't catch the off Broadway run, so I'm really excited to catch it on Broadway!

It's not Broadway, but I auditioned for a local production of Hairspray last night! I've been involved with this specific company since I was 10 (I'm now 27) and it went really well! About four years ago I would have been auditioning for Tracy, but I've lost about 65 pounds since then so I went for Penny and the ensemble. I didn't decide I was going to audition for sure until Tuesday as I'm starting a graduate program in the fall to get licensed as an ELA teacher, but I'm glad I went out and had a ton of fun at the auditions. I'm not sure how they're going about callbacks, as they need to hold another night of auditions for the black cast, but hopefully I'll hear something soon!

Good luck!! My daughter became involved with local theater in 5th grade and that is how I came to love it!

:sad2:Save you pennies.... Our news just said Hamilton prices are going up, to around $800 prem seats, and close to $200 regular orchestra seats. Reason given - to reduce scalpers....

Just back from seeing SHE LOVES ME. It was absolutely charming from start-to-finish. Ilona had me smiling from ear-to-ear in a way I haven't done in quite some time - it was pure old-school theatrical heaven!

That is EXACTLY how we felt! We had these goofy smiles on our faces the entire show! And, did you get to meet Zachary Levi afterwards? He was the most charming actor I have ever met! We had such a nice chat. (he sang on our friend's CD and we sang a few bars together. lol)

Did anyone from this thread attend the matinee performance of "Bright Star" on Saturday, May 28? Those of us who did got a bonus concert! At the interval between the first and second act STEVE MARTIN came on stage and treated us to about ten minutes of superb banjo music! He looked like he was having the time of his life, and those of us in the audience (not still in line for the bathroom or the bar!) certainly were! After the show we asked an usher if that happened every performance, and she said that it NEVER happened before! What a treat!

We really enjoyed "Bright Star." As a pp noted about "She Loves Me," "Bright Star" was an old-fashioned musical from start to finish. We knew where the story was going after the first few scenes, but that didn't detract from our enjoyment of the show in the slightest. And I think it should have received a Tony nomination for Choreography - the dancing was original, energetic, and extremely well executed.

This was our 50th anniversary trip and "Bright Star" and the bonus concert were two of the highlights.

We also saw "Les Miserables" for about the 50th time. There were enough changes in the staging, music (additional lyrics) and fleshed-out stage design to make it interesting, With one notable exception the voices and acting were very good. I particularly liked the staging of "Empty Chairs." I didn't like the fact that no stage revolve reduced the cast to doing what looked like the Electric Slide for "One Day More" at the end of the first act. Oh well, I guess everyone did the best s/he could under the circumstances.

All in all, a wonderful celebration of our anniversary.

Oh, me me ME! We did manage to see it off-broadway. It was my daughter's boyfriend's first show ever, and he really enjoyed it. Sam (daughter) and I really loved it. Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones are just incredible. We will be revisiting it at the Belasco if at all possible!

Wasn't that great?! I thought they were nearly flawless. I saw it with my daughter, my best friend, and my daughter's best friend, and every one of us thought it was a total delight. Just a beautiful production. And that set!!!
