I swear there has been a thread on this, but I couldn't find it. I just finished this book last night and all I can say is WOW!! What a great book. Not too many books get a real good emotional response out of me, but this one did. I recommend this if you are looking for a book to read. I read it in about a 24 hour time period. I couldn't put it down.

It's a little hard to get started with. The author writes in "stream of consciousness" style which I'm not crazy about, but I got over that quickly.

Try it.

I'm in the middle of the book, and it gets a "WOW!" from me too!

Unlike Oprah, I did not stay up late reading this book, nor could I read huge chunks of it at a time. Unlike other books, I didn't "devour" it. I found that I had to read small bits and put it down b/c it was so intense! It was as if I could only take it in small doses! I absolutely loved the book, though! I bought a few copies to give for gifts. It just took me a longer time to read than it did for Oprah and her staff b/c I found it so overwhelming at times.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book ... but WOW -- it was like nothing I've ever read before.

My cousin just sent me "My Friend Leonard" ... but I need some time to "recover" from A Million Little Pieces first.

ETA -- this isn't a spoiler in any way, shape or form ... but there is one part where he talks about the singer who comes to the rehab center to talk to the group. He describes the singer as having big lips and this huge appetite for drugs and alcohol. Who do you think this singer was? I was thinking Steven Tyler???? At first, I thought Mick Jagger, but then Steven Tyler popped into my head. Your thoughts?!?!

Definitely Steven Tyler. At first I thought Mick Jagger but then I realized that while Mick may have used drugs and alcohol, I don't think he ever got to the point of needing rehab. We all know about Steven Tyler.

I started the book on Sunday and finished it last night. I don't think I would have ordinarily read the whole book that fast but since I'm going through my own "trauma" right now it was a GREAT escape for me. I almost wish it wasn't over. I actually got queasy a few times reading it--all the physical anguish he went through.

No, this is not a cheery book.

I just heard about "My Friend Leonard" today so I guess I will have to see if I can find it. I want it NOW. I don't want to order it. I must have my fix NOW!! :teeth:

This one is on my list of 'to-reads' I've heard a lot of good recommendations.

Just hoping parts don't hit too close to home; or, on second thought, maybe it will be more meaningful? :sunny:

I just finished it last week. My mom gave it to me to read on the plane on the way to Vegas, and I actually found myself going back to the hotel room early at night to finish it. It was a great book.

All I can really say is that the guy (the author) is actually a very amazing person. The way he confronts his addiction is different than anything that I have ever read and it certainly "hits home" to me in some ways. I don't want to give away too much to those who are reading it but he basically felt that throwing your life over to God was not going to work for him. This kind of went against everything "the program" teaches. I admired the way he made it all work for his belief system.

I don't wnt to spoil anything but I would love to really know what this book is about. I heard Oprah mention t but have no idea what its about. I love meaningful books. Is this a true story?

True story. It is about a "serious" drug addict and his 6 weeks in rehab. I know it doesn't sound exciting but it is really good.

I'm going to read it soon. I watched him on Oprah, I'd never heard of the book before. A few days later we watched the same ep. of Oprah in school so I really want to get it. :)

So it's good and emotional? I've picked it up 3 or 4 times now but didn't buy it. I didn't like the no paragraphs and indentations I saw on the first page.

I have had sooo many arguments with my Uncle (who is very involved in AA for about 25 years and does interventions and such for the group) about addiction being a choice (I say), not a disease (he says) and this was the first thing I ever read that backed up my position. (I speak as the daughter, daughter-in law, neice, grandaughter and sister of people with addiction problems.) I don't walk down their path and feel the pain of addiction, but to me it's because I chose not to go down that path. No flames please, just my humble opinion. I feel that there is a choice involved evertime you take a drink, take a pill, or do what ever your addiction of choice. A disease is not a choice. You can't decide tomorrow I'm not going to have cancer or heart disease. I don't know , I guess if the 12 step thing works for you go for it but it would never work for me either. And yes I do believe their is a genetic predispostion to addiction (look at my family history) but that's why I don't drink. My choice. Amy

I work at Barnes and Noble and this is our biggest seller right now. I haven't read it yet, but plan too!

I saw this at the library when it was first on Oprah but put it down. I'll put a copy on hold for myself today.
Im not sure if alcoholism is a choice or not.
