And don't discount how difficult it is to find a place where you're willing to leave your dog! So many places just have them sit in tiny cages (on concrete) all day long with only short bathroom breaks.
Exactly!
We went through 3 kennels back in virgina before we found one that was acceptable.
We were lucky with this one. It was recommended by someone from our synagogue and with our dogs, if we find somewhere that they dont mind being and that treats them well, we dont want to change that.
Lizzie, our 11 year old dog who is sick, went through 3 homes in nine months. She was neglected and abused in those 9 months. Unfortunately, even after about 10 years, she is still very skittish and she gets scared very very easily.
Yofi, our 7 year old dog, spent almost 6 months basically locked in a cage at a kennel when they couldnt take care of him anymore. Hes not as skittish as lizzie but he still does get scared very easily. He is also a very difficult dog in general
At our kennel they:
have indoor/outdoor runs
toys (tennis balls, bones, squeak toys). Each dog is given new toys when they are brought in and they are replaced as needed
walked at least 3 times a day (sometimes more depending on how busy they are)
played with twice a day (fenced in play area)
come home nice and clean

they get a bath the night before they get picked up
When we left them one time, we had a really bad thunderstorm. Lizzie gets so scared to the point where she cries and shakes. Well, one of teh owners of the kennel took lizzie out of the run and brought her into the front office with her so that she wouldnt be as scared. That's the type of treatment that is woth the money.
Also, they keep them in the same run (they do better together) but they feed them apart (they cant eat together) and they also take them on walks and paytime without other dogs (they dont always play well with others).
We have high needs dogs that unfortuantely cost us a lot. We wouldnt trade them for anything. We love them. But dang they are expensive!!! haha
