Steven Spielberg's first complete partnership with the mouse is a fantasy film based on Roald Dahl's novel about giants who hide from us conventual sized humans. Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill discovers an almost invisible world when she comes in contact with her new Big Friendly Giant, voiced by a motion captured Mark Rylance. BFG excels in the career of dream catching. The effects are a technical treat but because the characters are so appealing, the audience can forget about HOW the film was made and enjoy the story. It's whimsical and filled with movie magic but, I'll admit takes a confusing turn during the third act that had me worried it would fall on its face. However, it works and produces the funniest scene which left the audience literately howling. There are a few scary moments that involve some bullying but I wouldn't say they're too intense. My 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter both enjoyed it. So did their parents. 3 1/2 big and tall shops out of 5.
Next up for Disney is Pete's Dragon.

I loved the movie!! Roald Dahl was my favorite author when I was younger, and still is among my favorites as an educator. BFG was one of the first books I read from him, right after the two Charlie books, and of all the movies based on Dahl's books, I'd rate this as most true to the book.

Everyone was exactly as I pictured them. The whimsical world of dreams was far better than anything I had imagined. The retention of Dahl's amazing made-up words, including the use of "scrupdiddlyumptious" in the movie made me smile. I felt the actors all did a great job; Ruby Barnhill has a good future ahead of her.

I was grinning from ear to ear during this movie like a little kid. It made me feel like I was 6 years old, reading the book again. BFG was one of the books which left an impression on me. In fact, I named a giant teddy bear I had as a kid "BFB", for "Big Friendly Bear".

Finding Dory was a great movie, and I knew it would be hard to top this summer, but this one just may have done it.
