I keep hearing negative remarks about the opening of Pop Century (how its never happened, it looks really ugly, etc.)

Can someone give me the whole story about what is going on with this resort? I'm sure its been discussed before, but I haven't heard the "whole story" and am ver curious to why its such a hot topic for debate.

Thanks!

Here's what I heard - the resort was supposed to open sometime late last year or early this year (can't remember). Then the downturn in the economy and 9/11 happened, they decided to stop construction since they would not need these rooms in the immediate future. I also heard that they decided at the same time to step up construction of the Beach Club Villas since they had DVC members standing in line waiting to buy points there. That resort opened a couple months early in July of this year. So until the economy starts improving and there is a greater demand for rooms, I don't think Pop Century will open.

I also read somewher that the 1st phase could open in 2 weeks, it is that ready to open....... I mean 2 weeks prep time to spif it up, etc, and they could open....... it looks horrible to me, from the road when you pass it.

The "inside" info ;) I have states that Pop Century will open on July 15th 2003. But, then will close for rehab on August 1st, 2003.:jester:

There's nothing wrong with Pop Century that a couple of pounds of well placed C-4 couldn't cure!!!

Everytime we drove buy it, construction would be all-a-buzz.. until a few months ago. Then, it just stopped. No trucks, no deliveries, nothing was happening.

When it does open, it will definitely be a place for kids (imho) as the structures have these very large and colorful pop icons all along the roof lines.

From what I've seen, they've slowed down Pop Century constuction, and stepped up Saratoga Springs construction.

Why is everyone saying it is ugly and an eyesore? I didnt notice anything last August when we drove thru the WDW entrance...does anyone have a pic of it?

Why would it be ugly and an eyesore next to the entrance?
I dont understand all the complaining. Im missing something.

It's the huge words on top of the buildings that most object to.
I suspect when (and before) AS' opened many ranted about how ugly they were too. And if you like a more refined look, they are.
We like the giant icons. Those are fine. The words - I think we all got tired of them ages ago.
So close to a highway, I would be more concerned about a noise factor. Because of that, it remind me more of a Motel 6.

I don't have a problem with the AS resorts, but I can't stand the way Pop looks. For one thing AS isn't out in the open, and as some one else stated I can't stand the cliche's. "It's, like, gag me with a spoon!"
