The best way to make reservations....

We just became members. I have a 2bd reserved at OKW for Dec 30- Jan 4 for a family vacation. I have us waitlisted at AKV, as we'd rather stay there. We have 120 points available from 2012 and another 120 that we can borrow from 2013.

OKW is 195 for our stay, which would leave 45 points still available.
AKV standard is 196, which would leave 44 points.
AKV SV is 245. So we'd have to transfer or buy one time use of 5 points.

I'm also traveling on a girl's trip in Oct. AKV Standard would be 40 points. AKV SV would be 52 points.

Assuming I can get availability, If I go ahead and use 52 points now for the Oct trip for AKV SV but then the AKV SV becomes available in Dec I would need 57 points.

How would the reservation in this case work? Would I still be able to waitlist the AKV SV Dec trip if I don't have enough points available (even if I did one time use from Disney, I'd still be 33 points shy)? Will they let me waitlist and then if it became available transfer points from another member and add them to my points, ie will they hold my reservation until I can get the points transferred?

I don't want to pay cash for the Oct reservation and then still end up in OKW for Dec (like it stands) and end up with the 45 points left from 2013. I know I can always bank them later of coarse, which isn't a bad idea either.

DVC gurus....?
THANKS for your help!

What is your use year? You mention borrowing and then borrowing again, from 2 different future use years (for your 3rd item). If that's what you meant, you can't do that.

I'd be borrowing my own points from 2013. I still have my 2012 available. I'd also have to rent/transfer points from another member or Disney if both AKV reservations work out.

You can only wait list when you have points in the account to fill the wait list.

You can not use the one time use points for a wait list either.

But, you do mention having a total of 240 points available, including the borrowed ones and then say you will need to borrow 5 more, which does not make sense.

Knowing your UY would really help make sure that you understand how to use your points but if you want to wait list using points from another member, you must do the transfer prior to putting in the wait list.

Sorry- my UY is march. Sandi you answered what I needed to know. (I'd have to transfer those points from another member prior).. Like I stated earlier, if nothing comes through on the wait list for AKV and we stay at OKW then I'd have almost enough points to cover my Oct trip. I don't want to take a chance and mess up the Dec trip though.

Sorry- semantics, I meant ' borrow' as in one time use or transferring from another member.

The points need to be in your account to make a reservation or waitlist or you need to be able to borrow them.

A word of caution, MS can not hold inventory when changing your reservation. In order for them to make a change they cancel the old and then make the new. The possibility exists that someone else could snag the new available room before the CM does.

That would be a complex set of point usages even for some veteran owners. I would stick with your OKW reservation for Dec. this trip, since it is your first. You have many years ahead to stay at AKV, and at this late date, you aren't likely to get that standard view waitlist anyway. We own at both OKW and AKV. Love them both for different reasons, but waitlists are tricky, and I try to avoid them if possible.

Depending on when in Oct you want to stay you may find you have very little choice on where you stay then if you haven't already made those reservations. i second Diane's suggestion to just keep the OKW reservation this year and plan on AKV for another trip. OKW is my favorite for the Christmas season because it is so peaceful and the decorations are lovely not to mention the large rooms and balconies. It is a nice break from the crowds at the parks and also is close to DTD for some good places to eat. Good luck and hope you have two great trips.
