The Berkshires

I have purple streaks in my hair and I am in my 20s. I work in the professional world. No one has ever said to me that my hair reflects otherwise. In fact, I receive compliments several times a week from people of all age ranges and professions/walks of life, as well as numerous times at a professional conference I recently attended.

As for the OPs question, certainly there is nothing wrong with the hairstyle you would like to have and the fact that you are a SAHM voids the whole "professional" argument altogether. However, I don't have children but if I did, their needs would certainly come first, especially if I were having the money troubles you seem to post about often. And that is the real issue here, not whether this hairstyle would be too funky for a mom.

You could always do it cheaply yourself at home or have a friend help you.

Well, one explanation is that you do not know everything about what is going on in a person's life by their posts on the DIS, only what they choose to tell you. I can use my own situation to explain: I have posted 1) That our air conditioning is broken and can't afford to fix it right now, 2) That we went to WDW 2 weeks ago, and 3) That we are staying at the beach for 4 days this coming week. That would look like I was being irresponsible and spending money on trips when I could be fixing my a/c. But the truth of the matter is that we are extremely thrifty, and the cost of the two trips combined, even with allowing a splurge of a nice dinner on each trip, does not even come close to the $1500 we need for the a/c, so we still would not be able to fix it right now anyway. And I would spend my vacation next week sitting in a stifling hot house (we live in FL) when I could be spending it in an air conditioned condo on the beach. And, I already know I will be getting a large bonus next month, in addition to a raise, with which I will be able to pay for the repairs.

You share many of my thoughts. No one knows all the ins and outs of a families financial situation. DH and I have had some major financial difficulties over the years and at one point while he was laid off we took 2 Disney trips and got a new tv as well. No one knows how we paid for the trips or tv but it's nobodys business......but I will say the money didn't come out of our own pocket. It's simply none of our business to judge the OP simply on the info she's given because it's obviously not the whole story.

CrankyShank did mention something you might want to consider though. When you do fun things for yourself, think about the upkeep after the fact. That alone could change your mind.

OK - I actually came on here to answer the original question. I didn't even notice who it was who asked, so I don't care what you do with your money or lack thereof.

The answer to your OQ is the Clip Shop in Pittsfield. High end salon that can take care of whatever you want.

I am from Pittsfield and will be there in a few days. This is where I used to get my hair cut and get salon services. In fact I am thinking about getting my nails done soon there as I have a gift certificate.

Then obviously you were dealing with Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Duel Masters, etc. Dungeons and Dragons is a book/mini figure game that "mature adults" and some kids play. Yeesh.

PLEESZZE......I think I know where the heck I worked.............wow, your tag is you uh! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Whoa, your SO works for WOTC??? Rock on!! :)

Kind of, sort of. He does some stuff with local game stores that sell WoTC products and does up reports for them, sometimes he runs demos etc. It's not his full time job, but something he does a few times a month for them. (but he'd hoping it will lead to one with them some day...)

They send him tons of free products. We have, like, every board game they've come up with in the last year or so since he started, and all kinds of neat WoTC swag (think messenger bags, shirts, pens, etc.) and usually a case (12 packages) of every new set of miniatures that comes out. :cool1: :cool1: It's always a fun day when we come home to the UPS notice that WoTC made a delivery for us... :cool1: :cool1:

ETA : Sorry Diana!

I, for one, am not judging the OP.
I'm giving her honest advice based upon knowing her posts in the past.

I don't really understand why telling someone something that they might not want to hear is judging. When I first started posting here, people gave me advice I didn't want to hear, but I took it and am much better off for it. Diana seemed to appreciate the advice given, and I also tried to suggest other, alternative ideas that might give her the same sense of doing something for herself. :confused3

Diana it's no secret that some of your threads in the past have gotten me going on more than one lecture about how you choose to live. Since I haven't really read any of your posts in a long time can I just say this:

What you are saying is you want platinum blonde with purple ends. I am a believer in that a woman's hair is her own and she should do with it what she chooses. If, for some reason in the near future, you need to run out and get a job, guess what? You can just cut off the purple part since it's only on the ends, look very chic and apply for those jobs.

Problem solved. If you can afford this do what you like.

And I have always heard good things about The Clip Shop in Pittsfield, although personally I have never been there.

Have fun! Your baby is adorable by the way :)

Actually when I had small children, my hair was streaked with peanut butter, spaghetti, or even chocolate. And that came at no additional cost to me for upkeep. As soon as it disappeared from my hair, one meal later...voila there it was again! I think the platinum blond will show off lots of interesting color combinations1

And just think how fascinating those purple ends will be to grab hold of. Wow, way better than a crib mobile!

You seem like a fun young lady Diana, if you want to have your hair done, go for it and enjoy.

Just beware that when they bleach your hair it burns, not painful but it's definitely uncomfortable.

I went from very red to light blonde and it took hours, just got my roots(dark brown) done, after about a month and they took awhile as well. Just wanted to let you know because of the time factor so you know it's going to take awhile. Also if you have sensitive skin you might want to take a benedryl before you go because your skin might get irritated.

Good luck with your hair, changing color is always fun.

You guys are SO lucky to get all of that stuff. I loved WoTC but unfortunately our Dallas area location closed last year. :(

To the OP, I hope that you post a picture of your new hair if you go through with it. It sounds intriguing. :)

I know what it is hon....I managed a toy store, I thought little kids played it! I know no mature adults who play it!
This is so condescending, especially the "hon" part. Just who do you think you are?

And by the way, you are soo wrong. The folks I know who play(including my DH) are well respected, mature men and women in their 40's. Many of whom are college educated, own their own businesses, etc. I don't know any "little kids" that play, it's much, much too complex.

I haven't posted anything about DH in a while beacuse I felt so beaten down on here when I did but he's done a real 355. (Not 100% yet but close) He's giving the kids baths and he feeds PJ dinner and plays with him all night when he gets home. He's started behaving like a real dad should and when I see it I want to cry every single time beacuse I can tell he's finally really enjoying his time with his two boys and he sees how amazing and beautiful and wonderful they are. Things on that front are getting much much better.

I read the thread about the tatoo and this one, but I didn't post because I had nothing to add. I'm glad to read that your DH is trying to improve things!

ITA with Cruisnfamily.
Moral of the story: If you're going to be patronizing and try to act like someone else doesn't know what they're talking about, make sure YOU know what you're talking about first.

weird, weird, weird....I think you're doing it just for attention. But the attention you'll get is looks of disgust. Time to grow up. If you do go ahead with it, you can always tell your sons it's your halloween costume.

Ummm...
I knew a girl who had a mother who would dye her hair all sorts of colors. She was an amazing mother and her kids turned out just fine. She had a good job, a good husband and a very nice house. I always thought her mom was cool.

My ex boyfriend's mom had a light purple tint in her hair when she was 55. Who cares? I thought that was pretty cool too.

besides, she's just doing the tips purple. and as someone pointed out, that could easily be clipped when she wants to look for a job.

I can't imagine looking at someone with disgust because of their hair color.:confused3

yes, it probably looked fine, but was her hair platinum? My cousin has a purple tint put in her hair, but her hair is black, so the purple only shows up in the sunlight. That's totally different from platinum....

and by looks of disgust, I mean ~ I usually just shake my head and say
"what was she thinking???"

You shouldn't have much of a problem. I would think Pittsfield is a better bet-- this might sound weird, but I would just go to one of the local tat parlors and ask.

Edited to add:

I just went back to see what people had suggested, and I echo the Clip Shop recommendation. Never been myself, but knew people from college who went there. As for the rest of the conversation, I don't see a problem with punky hair. My mother is untraditional in many ways, and we didn't have much to live on sometimes, but my sister and myself have turned out excellently. My mother was strict, she was strong, she didn't bow to convention, and education was the most important thing in our household. As far as we're concerned, she has earned her quirkiness, and are thankful that she's passed a nice measure of it, along with her tolerance and strength, to us. I have an advanced professional degree and work in a high pressure professional environment-- I've found that most of us have our quirks (once a nerd/outsider, always a nerd/outsider). They're accepted. I wouldn't have it any other way.

As long as you can afford it, both monetarily and professionally, I would go for the purple, particularly if it keeps you sane and focused and therefore makes you a better mom where it really counts.
