This all began a few years ago when a now dear friend, Caroline, Lovingthemouse, innocently sent me an Instant Message asking about a pin bag. Caroline and I chatted over the years about a lot of things… but gee.. mostly Disney :D. She told me that she along with her husband were teachers in Springfield Mass., she has 4 daughters that are in college and a beautiful grandson. Along with that, Caroline each year would take a group of kids from her school to Disney. These are inner-city kids and most could not afford it, but they would do a lot of fund raising to make sure as many kids could experience the magic of Disney. The story always touched me. We had this conversation right before one of her trips and she would just gush about the kids. She truly loves each and every one of them. A teacher any parent would want their child to have. That trip was planned to the “T” except for the departure weather. One of the worst snowstorms to hit New England happened on the day of departure. Caroline was able to round all of the kids up early and get them on one of the last flights out that day. Those kids were going to Disney, one way or another.

In March 2002, another trip was planned. Unfortunately the tragedies of September 11, 2001 happened. And many of the families were just not comfortable sending their children on a plane to Disney. So sadly, that trip was cancelled.

In the Fall of 2002, school has started once again, and planning has begun for the March 2003 trip. The more and more Caroline would talk about it, I knew I had to help as many children experience the magic. The magic that many of us have been fortunate to experience many times.

Now, just an aside here… I have never met Caroline in person. Just through the love of Disney and pins did we become friends. This just shows you the power those little pieces of metal hold.

Over the course of time, and talking with my mother we were pretty determined to help the kids. But I knew I would need some help with this endeavor. So in October, I took a chance and sent an e-mail to Leslie – BeautyLLM – and asked her for some help. I was very happy when she agreed to help me in raising some money. The plans were in motion now. We wanted to keep this a surprise as long as we could. So we knew we could not advertise this on the boards and would not be able to anyway due to board rules. But that did not stop us. We started an e-mail campaign with the hopes of it spreading to everyone. We were very fortunate and were able to raise a nice bit of money for the kids!!!!

Well in the series of e-mails, one very good friend in the pin world, decided that these kids needed a lanyard and pins. Through some sprinkling of pixie dust, each of the 42 kids would have a lanyard and some pins for them to trade. Leslie and I were so excited and could not wait until Caroline found out. Well the time came to send off the money raised to Caroline and her kids. Needless to say, Caroline was overwhelmed. Words are just hard to describe the moment. She just ran to her principal to tell him about the windfall that came in. Little did she know that there were other surprises in store.

In the meantime, Leslie was working hard with a contact at Disney that our special friend told us about, to get refillable mugs donated or something to raffle off to raise some more money. Well, this is still Disney, they were not going to be able to donate the mugs, but could send up something nice to raffle off. They just needed the schools information of their letterhead in order to process the request. So, this one we had to tell her about first. Again, she was excited beyond words. The next day, a letter was faxed to Disney and the waiting began. Then it happened. A LARGE box was delivered to the school. Inside was a LARGE 2 level snowglobe from the Share a Dream Come True parade at the a Magic Kingdom. Well by now, all of the teachers and administrators know the story and were all excited about this great snow globe to raffle off. The students and teachers had a raffle and made another bit of money.

Then the third surprise, the box of lanyards and pins arrived. Well, by now, I figured I better buy stock in a tissue company as Caroline was using a lot of them.

During all this time, Caroline kept asking and asking if mom and I could come down and meet the kids at Disney. Well it started to wear on me…. Lots of arm twisting… and I decided that maybe I could make the trip. But I did not tell Caroline. Usually it is mom and I that travel together to WDW. We make a good team. Well mom got a new job last November and would not be able to make this trip as she was still on probation. So I would be making this trip alone. So in January I watched the fares…and watched.. and watched. Finally they were a good price and I bought them.. Then waited for the codes to come out and got a room at All Star Movies. Now I just had to wait for March 1 to come around when I leave and wait for all of them to arrive on March 3.

Caroline still does not know that I am coming down and surprising her. Very few knew that I was going. And we kept it that way. So I helped her plan the itinerary, the whole time I am writing it all down, so I would know where she would be to carry out this last surprise……

I am posting this as I head out the door to meet Caroline and students of Kiley and Duggan Middle Schools at MGM. Wish me luck, I will post my day later.

Thanks if you have stuck with me this long.

Debbie

Details Debbie!!! I want DETAILS!!!!!:D

I am SO excited for you and Caroline...I wish I could see the expression on Caroline's face when she realizes it's you!!

Debbie only described about half of what she did to help make this trip truly special and magical for Caroline's students. She has a heart of gold and I am so proud to be her friend.

And I am so relieved that today is the day...it wasn't easy keeping this secret for so long...I came within seconds of blurting it out to Caroline over the weekend:eek:! But I snapped back into reality just in the knick of time!

Can't wait to read the next installment!

What a wonderful thing you have done! It will come back to all of you ten fold!

Good luck with your trip.....hope you packed the tissues!!!!

And I am so glad it all worked out for Caroline...such an undertaking for everybody, but it couldn't have happened for a better person..

I am hoping to meet up w/ the "gang" at Scoops' seminar tomorrow...should be a blast...

Debbie,

It's a wonderful story, and I hope you and Caroline and all the kids have the best time ever. I don't know what anybody can say about a friend who would make that kind of committment to another friend, and maintain the amount of energy it must have taken to keep it all going Friends that care about each other that much are a treasure--you and Caroline are lucky to have that.

Enjoy!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well it was a wonderful day.

I headed over to MGM for early entry. I knew that they would not make it that early due to their flight the night before, but I did not want to miss them. So, I waited and waited.... the rains came... the cold came... but they were not.

I stood on the porch of Sid Cahunga's to stay dry and out of the wind as I scanned the crowd that was pouring into MGM. After getting a bit worried that something had happened to them, or at the last minute she decided to go to a different park then I spotted some kids across the entrance. Bunches of kids wearing lanyards.

So, I just walked over to the center area in front of the information booth and looked for Caroline. Even though I had never met her in person, I had seen pictures of her. By now I realized I was standing in the middle of all of her students! SO I stepped back knowing she had to be here somewhere!! Finally, one of the students was standing next to me and I asked her to help me. After giving me a weird look :) I told her I was a friend of Mrs. Tougas but she has never met me and could she jelp me find her... she exclaimed "YOU"RE THE LADY FROM THE INTERNET!" I laughed and said yes. So she was on the hunt.

Caroline was just walking in the gate and the young lady ran to her.. "Mrs. Tougas, Mrs. Tougas!! You HAVE to meet someone!" A look of puzzelment filled her face as they dragged her over to me. She looked at me and took her just a brief moment before she realized who I was. :)

There were many many hugs, and so much emotion, words just can not describe. By now the other adults and kids are a bit confused LOL.... So I was introduced to the crowd as the lady who helped get the pizza party and the mugs. Caroline just kept saying "I can not believe you are here!"

So we spent the day together. WE all went to Rock N Roller coaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours, Indiana Jones, Backstage tour and lots of other fun stuff. But the best thing....At lunch I started to teach them about pin trading!!!! Well they loved it. We have a few that were bitten by the bug (I think I filled my quota of those to be assimilated this month). I was wearing a kids lanyard, and they could trade with me just like a CM lanyard. THey were having a ball. When they go and see Scoop today, they will be ready.

So it was a fantastic day and very magical. I will head over and see them at MK later today tomorrow they do TYyphoon Lagoon.

I want to thank all of those that have posted. There are so many people that have contributed to this effort. I hate to list them all for fear of forgetting someone. But a HUGE thanks go to them as we could not have done it without you.

And sorry no pictures yet, my digital camera died a painful death on Monday, so I have a regular camera taking some of the pics.

I will try and post their day with Scoop either later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for reading!
Debbie

This story is just the best!! Oh what I'd give to be there today and see the "GANG" with Scoop!! It will be just fantastic.

But I have this thing that gets in the way called a "JOB"!

But Blessings to all who have made this such an unforgettable experience for those kids. To be a part of that must just fill you with incredible joy!!

Pixie dust and blessings,
Winnie

Thanks for the update Debbie. Or should I start referring to you at "THE LADY FROM THE INTERNET". :)

I saw you online last night and looked for your update then, but I imagine that you were pretty well worn out for the day. I'm so glad that things went well and that you were able to connect with the group. Thanks for the update. It's a dreary day here in NE Ohio and the weather is about to turn nasty. It warms my heart to hear of your adventures.

Debbie,

What a lovely story!! Did someone take a picture of Caroline the minute she realized it was you?? That expression must have been priceless.:earseek: Can't wait to hear more updates and see the pictures. Not to mention the thrill Caroline, the other adults and You must be having seeing the childrens faces as they discover the MAGIC of WDW. Have a GREAT TIME!! :teeth:

Debbie & Leslie, what wonderful ideas you had to help these children have a magical trip to WDW!! Why didn't you tell me the students needed lanyard pins?! I'm looking forward to hearing more stories about this trip from Debbie & Caroline :).

It was a "magic" day today.

The kids went on their "YES" educational program today. From what I hear they had a grat time. They were able to go on Space Mountain, Splash, Big Thunder, and learn about the physics of them. The day started pretty early for them, but they think it was worth it.

I was not able to join them on the program, so I went over to Wide World of Sports and got the mystery pin (sorry no extras LOL), wandered through Epcot then headed to Magic Kingdom. Today the kids were meeting Scoop at the 1:00 Pin Talk.

The kids were arriving, and we sat them all in the back and waited. Scoop arrived in typical Scoop fashion :) And following close behind were the Dapper Dan's and Mayor Weaver. Well that was atreat. Mayor Weaver welcomed everyone to Main Street USA. The Dan's did a few songs. THe kids were loving it.

THe Mayor and Scoop handed out Official Citizens of the Magic Kingdom buttons. Then it was time to do the pin ettiquette talk.

He asked me to come up to be his assistant. Scoop did a great job and the kids were loving it all. THe kids that were too cool to trade the day before were coming up to us afterwards to trade.

Nat and Sandy were also there. They even got in on the trading with the kids. Of course, it did not take long for the kids to learn about pins and they wanted the Tinkerbell pin from the cruise LOL. I was glad that they were able to join us for this great experience. Not sure, but this may be one of the bigger 1:00 pin talks that he has ever had LOL!

The kids went back on their way to finish off the magic kingdom. But not before, Scoop had one more pin to give them to trade. He handed each one of them the ever sought after American Express WHite glove pin.

It was probably one of the most special pin talks I have ever been to. I was so happy to be able to attend it. And I do wish my mom could have been there to see it.

Last night the kids had their pizza party in the food court, with their mugs that we all helped raise the money to buy. There were poeple that came over and complimented them on how well behaved they were. Quite a kudo to Caroline and the other teachers that are here.

I headed over to see the last Off Kilter show of the day (I was in withdrawls) and Nat and Sandy joined me... and he lasted the whole show! Now that is an accomplishment LOL

Nat, Sandy and I walked around Epcot as they will be going home today (well maybe....there is snow expected LOL) then headed to Downtown Disney. It was a great end to the day.

Thursday... THey head to Typhoon lagoon then to Epcot. And I may just have them see an Off Kilter show in there.

It sounds like Debbie had a wonderful day, but she left out a very important detail...

DEBBIE WAS AWARDED A SCOOP PIN!!!!

You know, when Debbie emailed me last fall and asked me to help with a top secret project to help Caroline and her students I was so touched that she would do this for someone that she had never met that of course I jumped on the bandwagon! We had a great time creating and executing a game plan to surprise Caroline and her students…well, you all know about the lanyards and the pins, and the All Star mugs, and the snowglobe that was sent for auction, but there are other things that Debbie and her family did behind the scenes that go so far beyond the call of duty, suffice it to say that there is no more giving person in the world…Disney or otherwise.

I am so glad that Debbie was recognized for the caring, giving person she is and that it happened while Caroline and her students were there. She is a shining example of how we should all try to live our lives…a person with a heart of gold who continuously goes out of her way to enrich the lives of other people. I know she has enriched mine, and I am so honored to be able to call her my friend.
