Trip Report for DisneyWorld March 1-5, 2008

Me: 40-something
DH: 40-something
Now College Son: Age 18
Beagle: Age 13

Day 1 --

In the past, dis-boarders may have read some of our other Trip Reports with the Beagle being featured prominently. I just wanted to let you know that she is still with us - age 13 - and is as active and beloved as ever.

It's college Spring Break Time and it's time to plan a trip to our favorite vacation destination. DH and I wondered if our now-freshman college-aged son even wanted to be seen with his Mom and Dad on College Spring Break. We're hearing tales of other "Spring Broke" destinations of mysterious far-away places including Panama City and Langerado (which none of us had ever heard of ... we finally had to look it up on the internet). But it's not long before our son announces that he is looking forward to going to Disney on his Spring Break (and with us even!) We raised him right!

We spent a fair amount of time figuring out travel logistics. Our son doesn't get out of classes until Friday at 3:00 pm (I know, I know -- who takes a class on Friday afternoons at 2:00 pm?) So, do we pick him up on Friday and start the 10 hour drive from campus arriving on Saturday afternoon - or do we drive him home first and then leave on Saturday morning, etc. We were very seriously considering the first alternative especially since the deeply-discounted airlines (Allegiant) did not have a plane arriving and leaving on the days that we needed it so that's out. One night at 11:00, DH happened to be looking at the Delta site and came racing in (I had been sleeping by this time) and said, "We need to make a decision right now! Delta has a discounted air fare for when we need it for $75 each way!" He's jumping up and down and I'm barely awake enough to say - "You better hurry up and reserve our flight!" He got back to the computer, and it was still there so 3 seats were booked in short order. It had been a long time since I had ridden a "full service" airline. I was at least looking forward to my soft drinks and snacks for free.

The next day, it was my job to secure the rental car online. Since we were arriving at the Orlando airport (instead of the Sanford airport which we had done the last 2 times though Allegiant), we were able to use the Emerald Aisle at National Rental Car. On a previous trip, it had been fabulous to just sach-ay our way through the airport, cross over to the Florida-landscaped breezeway to where the cars were parked and choose the make, model and color of our choice. On that previous trip we lucked out and got a brand new Buick with less than 20 miles on it! Considering another rental car agency was not even an option. This time, at the National site I used the appropriate discount code, got a good deal for $37.50 per day and chose the intermediate model so that we would qualify for the Emerald Aisle.

The big day drew closer. It was time to pick up the boy on campus (a 3 1/2 hour drive away). Earlier in the week, the 2:00 professor announced to the class that he was not going to go over any new material, so that if you could not make it to class on Friday at 2:00, he was not going to hold it against anybody! What a nice man! Since the Friday morning class has already been canceled, DH picked up DS on Thursday for the uneventful trip home.

It is always a happy reunion when Mother and Son get together. I am regaled with statements such as "Mom, I'm thinking about skydiving" and the like. Mom's response is always, "Well, you can keep thinking." Other statements were announced such as "Mom, I have discovered the joys of drinking coffee". Mom thinks, "That's better than discovering the joys of drinking something else!" So, after work on Friday, everybody packed, the Beagle was placed in the premium kennel she has used ever since she was a puppy, and the next day finally arrived.

Arrival at the airport was uneventful. I had the digital camera snapping away with photos such as DS in front of the plane we were going to ride in. DS and me in the terminal. DS and DH in front of the ticketing booth, etc. We took our seats which were configured 2 + 2 with DS and me on one side, and DH across the aisle (sitting next to the stranger, hee hee). We took off and DS and I started perusing Star Magazine. I got a free subscription for buying a disposable razor and had it sent to the boy's campus mailbox - just so he would have some sort of mail on a regular basis. He's the first to hear all of the important world events, such as Angelina's expecting twins, etc. Anyway, now he saves them all for me and we laugh at the celebrity outfits where they write things like "Punky Brewster meets Bride of Frankenstein" or "Pepto Abyssmal". So we were flipping through the latest issue of Star and shortly thereafter I viewed the flight attendant making her way down the aisle with the coveted inducement - free snacks! Cookies, cookies, cookies, that's all I could think of. (It's the little things that make me happy.) She presented a very pretty wicker tray to our aisle and asked, "Would you care for peanuts, crackers or cookies?" We very politely nodded our heads and chose. I picked first. I picked up a thing that looks like a cookie package and smiled smugly. DS picked up a red package, and DH picked up a red package too. I looked at my package - it's the Cracker package! And it's got cream cheese and chives in it! No offense, but there's no way I am going to eat cream-y cream cheese and chives on an airplane. And since it is still sitting on the kitchen counter to this day, it's obvious I'm not going to eat it on land, either! I messed up and now I don't have my free cookie! The inevitable is coming. DH leans over and asks, "What did you get?" "Oh, I got these little crackers," I say, "but I'm going to save them until later." Of course, DS starts eating his package, and it's a Delightful cinnamon/gingersnap type cookie - only the very thing I was looking forward to. After the first pass-through, the flight attendant came back down the aisle taking drink orders. I am determined not to mess this up and quickly ordered my apple juice with ice. DH looked over and started to feel sorry for me, and handed me his red cookie package. He's one in a million!

After the drink orders were taken, I couldn't believe it, but the flight attendant came back down the aisle with the wicker tray again! She was asking every seat if they would like any more peanuts, crackers, or cookies! Yay! I chose the right thing this time. Meanwhile, DH got a little gleam in his eye. He informed me that he was going to procure TWO packages of cookies this time. I was aghast. "You can't!" I exclaimed. I looked at him closely as the tray was being offered. I don't want to promote bad behavior here so I will just have to leave you guessing as to whether he actually took 1 or 2!

We were just gearing up for the flight to land soon, when the flight attendant passed through again. We couldn't see what she had on the tray until she got closer. She's progressing down the aisle and there was a tray with little white styrofoam cups and red stir sticks sticking up. Could it be....? She got to our aisle. "Would you care for coffee?" Our son couldn't believe it. Of course he takes one - our son's airline flight had been made complete. Coffee on an airplane! Who would've believed it? Fantastical things happen when you're going to Disney!

The flight arrived and we said goodbye to the best Flight Attendant ever! We only had carry-on luggage so we didn't have to wait at baggage claim and proceeded directly to National Rental Car. I already informed DH and DS that I was not picking any pokey sedan for the rental car - I was going to choose the biggest SUV they had in the lot. We proceeded down the Emerald Aisle and there were 3 SUVs to pick from. Two white ones and a blue one. I didn't know the models - I just knew that I was going to pick the biggest one. We took our time and looked them all over. Finally, I settled on a white one - a Saturn Vue. It was as big as a truck! We loaded up and noticed it had 3000 miles on it.

We piled our stuff into the rental vehicle and headed off to Disney! Soon we came upon the awaited-for sign:

100_0549.jpg

Our trip had officially begun! Finally, we were visiting Disney again when everyone else was in school and we were going to have a deserted Disney! Our first hint of how untrue that would be was coming up. We decided to tour the Animal Kingdom first even before we checked in to the hotel. We wanted to do "all of the things that we were in too much of a rush to do on other trips". First, however, he had to park. We had a AAA Diamond Parking Pass, however, it wasn't a current year Parking pass (okay, so it was a 2007 - maybe they wouldn't notice). No such luck. As soon as we pulled up to the AAA lot, the very nice parking attendant lady said that our pass "had expired" and directed us to the overflow lot. The AAA lot was full anyway. We didn't think we needed a new one. Well, now we know!

After securing a new photo pass, and having the family picture taken in front of the tree of life, we decided to take the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch. We had only done it once in the past, and decided to give it a try again. The sideways train was interesting, and we definitely enjoyed seeing the huts that survived the Florida hurricanes on the way. Also, seeing the animal compounds "behind the scenes" of the Safari Ride was very interesting. We walked around Planet Watch and went into the petting zoo. They certainly had enough cast members stationed around to answer any questions! Also, PUSH the trash can was rolling around and the smaller kids were enjoying hearing him talk! He's always been a favorite of our family.

Next on the Animal Kingdom list was to walk the trails - something we never take the time to do regularly. At least it was not too hot.

100_0561.jpg

We were getting hungry so even though we checked out the menu at the new Yak and Yeti restaurant, we weren't feeling very adventurous and decided on an old favorite - Flame Tree. We ordered the Turkey Sandwich Meal - $7.29, the Beef Sandwich Meal - $7.79 and the Rib Meal - $8.99, 2 iced water - free and 1 Large Coke - $2.39. They rang up a cast member in front of us and noticed that their total was 50% off - ? - I guess it's one of the perks.

We sat overlooking the water on the terrace and watched Mickey's barge float by.

100_0555.jpg

There was a Collectible Card #14 on our tray to "not feed the ducks" but they didn't say anything about not watering them, and they certainly enjoyed my ice water.

We looked at the Safari Ride and Expedition Everest, but the lines were too long. We decided to drive over to the hotel and check in.

We were staying at the Doubletree in Downtown Disney. It was 3:15 p.m. The desk clerk said our room wasn't ready yet - because it was before 4:00. I had a hard time understanding this. We knew that they had lots of vacancies and that the hotel was nowhere near full. I decided to sit down on the couch and let DH deal with it, and they finally said they would try to find a room that was already available. Soon we had our keys and saw our beautiful suite. We were staying here 2 nights for free on frequent stay points and then moving over to the Dolphin for another 2 free nights with frequent stay.

We grabbed our jackets and headed over to EPCOT.

Trip Report for March 1-5, 2008

Me - 40-something
DH - 40-something
DS - In College - Now 18
Beagle - 13

It was 78 degrees already. That meant long pants and a short sleeved shirt for me and a jacket for the evening because it was going to be 68. We got in the car and headed over to Epcot. On the way, I spotted the only armadillo we saw on the trip. He was munching by the side of the road. So cute!! DH and DS were jealous 'cause they didn't see him.

Parking was easy and we headed inside. First, we wanted to find our Leave A Legacy tiles. This was not always a sure thing. On our last trip, we couldn't find them. We knew the general vicinity but we searched endlessly for the itty bitty 1/2 inch by 1/2 tiles wishing for a magnifying glass. Oh sure, my brother's tiles are at the end of a row right by the golf ball - everybody can see his from a mile away. We were not so lucky. I finally got smart and wrote the numbers down and put it in my fanny pack. I now whipped out the numbers and there they were! We heard a rumor that they were going to be moving all of the Leave A Legacy tiles, but they haven't done it yet!

The next thing I wanted to do was ride the "new" Spaceship Earth. The line was wrapped around 2 sides of the building. This had never been a favorite ride of my husband's, he thought it was too long, too slow, etc. etc. DS and I were going to do it. DH grudgingly came along and even waited in the line. I couldn't wait to hear the new spiel from Judy Dench - we all loved Judy Dench - me from As Time Goes By and the fellas knew her from James Bond. We sat down in our car and immediately noticed the tv/computer screen. DH started to perk up. As the cars got going, we looked up and they took our picture. DH actually smiled at this. I thought maybe they were going to offer your picture on photopass at the end of the ride. There were a few changes to the "scenery" but the big change came when the car started to turn backwards. What happened was you chose things on your computer screen such as where you were from and what kind of vacation you liked to take, etc. Then what they did was put the picture of your face on a cartoon character as part of a movie on the computer screen. It was really good! Before you knew it, the backwards part was over and you didn't even notice it! Also, when you exited the vehicle, you went through the hands-on room like before, but this time it was filled with new things. When you first stepped into the room, it had everybody's picture on a big movie screen and then it placed your picture onto a map of where you were from. Even DH said it was somewhat enjoyable! DS and I really enjoyed it. Spaceship Earth is always a must-see on every trip at least once.

It was too late for the free Disney Visa picture so we headed over to Imagination and did the ride, saw the new Canada movie with Martin Short (another one of those things we never had time to do ... it was good and reminded me of Soarin') and saw British Invasion. Epcot was getting ready for the Flower Festival starting on March 19 and all of the landscaping was Beautiful! We ate at Yakatori. We used to love it and ate there every time but then we didn't like it so much. We decided to give it another try. We ordered and I tried to pay with my Disney Rewards card. Another one of my big announcements pre-trip was that I was going to pay for all of our meals with my Disney Rewards card so it wouldn't be out of pocket. Unfortunately, I forgot it during Flame Tree for lunch. Anyway, the lady ran the card - it was declined. She ran it again - still no-go. After I paid cash, I noticed a little sticker on it. "You must call this number to have your card activated." Oops! Something to do tomorrow. DH decided to try one of the new choices on the menu - the Japanese Curry Rice ($6.49) - and he said he enjoyed it. It was a kind of stew and had potatoes in it and everything. They also offered a new noodle dish. DS had the Tonosama Combo Deal ($7.49). He didn't care for the onions mixed in with the steak. I had the Garden salad ($3.99) -their dressing is the best and a Mickey kids meal ($3.99) which is plenty for me. We sat outside and it was dark and you still couldn't see. Another thing they could fix is that some of the outside tables were broken and/or really wobbly. This could be a really nice area if they fixed it up some.

Next we went to American Adventure which we don't do every time - and it wasn't too busy. We made it to Germany to price cuckoo clocks for a certain somebody (ok, my older brother again) but they only had a few to choose from. Reflections of Earth started and we watched it while walking back to the car. DS asked, "Don't we have a CD of this music?" I assured him that we did and I could see the wheels turning - that there was something else that was going to be making it back to college. He already had a pile going of DH's cashmere coat, various designer shirts and anything else that might make college life more comfortable.

It was only 9 pm! What were we going to do now? All of the parks were closed! DH said he was going back to the hotel. It couldn't have anything to do with a certain basketball game on tv, could it? DS and I had to go along because we couldn't think of anything else. I wasn't too happy. Here I was ending my Disney vacation day at only 9 pm!

"Well," I announced, "at least I was the one who saw the Armadillo!"

Disneyworld Trip Report - for Sunday, March 2, 2008

Me - fortysomething
DH - fortysomething
DS - In College - now 18
Beagle - 13

It was Sunday, March 2, and it was going to be Magic Kingdom day - Yippee!DH had somehow convinced us that Sunday is the best day for going to the Magic Kingdom because "everybody is traveling that day so nobody will be there". First, however, DS and I had to cruise on down to the hotel lobby for our free breakfast. We were instructed that we could choose any of the cold items but the hot items would be extra. They had a very nice selection of cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, bagels, juice and DS had to get his coffee (also free). After leaving a nice tip, soon we were all on our way to the Magic Kingdom parking lot courtesy of our Saturn Vue. Since the AAA parking pass was now out, we parked in Pluto and took the tram in. DH and DS had tickets they could use, however, I had to change in an expiring 1-park-per-day ticket for a non-expiring 10 day parkhopper. I decided to use my Disney Rewards card here (I already called in and activated it) so soon we were heading for the monorail.

We immediately got our photopass pictures taken in front of the castle and proceeded to Astro Orbiter and the TTA Peoplemover. Nothing was too busy yet so we continued on to Buzz Lightyear and the Motor Speedway which we hardly ever did because of the long line. We couldn't believe it but the far left track was open on the speedway which I had never driven on before so we did that. We proceeded over to Mickey's Tent for more pictures, but after waiting awhile, the wait was going to be too long so we just headed over to Barnstormer instead. Next, we walked toward It's A Small World - but the line was out the door, so to speak, (I guess because Peter pan was closed across the way) so we took DS over to the Haunted Mansion to see the "new" changes to the ride. DH and I had already previewed this back in September when we went to Disney with aforementioned older brother and his wife. DS enjoyed the Haunted Mansion changes. Next we were ready for lunch and did a must-do - the Harbour House. I ordered the 1/2 tuna sandwich with chili for $7.49, DH had the same with a $2.39 Coke and DS had the chicken nuggets combo for $8.19. We sat in our favorite spot - an upstairs location right next to the window to review all of the comings and goings outside.

After lunch, we walked through Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and took the monorail back to the Contemporary for some picture taking. Magic Kingdom wasn't exactly empty and, in fact, it was fairly crowded. We got there at a good time and was able to do quite a bit without too much waiting, but it was getting busier as the day went on.

100_0581.jpg

Isn't this a pretty picture with the monorail right in front of the Magic Kingdom? We finally made it back to the car and decided to drive over to the Outlets to shop at Character Premiere where they sell loads of Disney items cheap! I bought DH a Pirates of the Caribbean watch for $2.99, a beautiful Mickey photo frame for $1.99, an Expedition Everest shirt with Yeti on it for $3.99 and a poster for DS's dorm room for $1.00. This place is the best-ever for souvenirs!!! We headed back to the hotel, and geared up for EPCOT later.

Let me remark on the weather here - It got up to just over 80 during the day which was not too hot for me - so that still meant pants and a short sleeve shirt. I packed shorts, but never used them. The bathing suit was out-of-the-question. It had to be way over 85 degrees before I would consider going to the pool. I brought a couple pair of capri pants which would be a possibility if it got any warmer. It was a fine line between shorts, capris and slacks. But one must be prepared for any eventuality. Nights on this trip always meant a jacket.

At Epcot, we sent our Thinking of You Postcards at Innoventions to guess who -- older brother again. I'm sure he was suitably jealous. The postcards had some new scenes and captions so they were pretty nice. Then we did Soarin', Test Track, Mexico Boat Ride, Norway Boat Ride (skipped the movie), and watched British Invasion. We headed over to Living Seas and we did the new Nemo ride and Turtle Talk with Crush (very cute and only the 2nd time we had seen it). It was close to 8:00 pm by this time and we decided on The Land for dinner. Apparently they closed at 8:00 so we got there just in time. I ordered the grilled salmon and 2 sides of mashed potatoes and salad for $9.49 and DS ordered the grilled salmon with salad and vegetable. DH ordered the 2 entree Chinese dinner with 2 meats and 2 sides - garlic chicken and beef entree and rice and vegetables for $9.99. DH doesn't listen to me about getting the free ice water so his drink was $2.29. We also splurged for dessert and ordered 2 chocolate mousse cakes ($3.99 each) and Key Lime Pie for $3.29. Everything was scrumptious and The Land is becoming one of my favorite counter service places to eat!

This ended another early night on vacation with everything closing up. The MK had Extra Magic Hour and we weren't staying on the property so we didn't qualify for it. The previous night, the MK had the Pirate and Princess Party so that's why the MK closed early then. We went back to the Doubletree and watched Illuminations outside our hotel window.

Next Report: Checking into the Dolphin -- and fewer crowds!

Disney World Trip Report For March 3, 2008

College Sweethearts - Married 23 Years!
DS - In College - Age 18
Beloved Beagle - Spry 13

It was a Monday. We were interested in seeing if there would be fewer crowds today. It was Spring Break for some of the colleges and schools, but we didn't think it would be too bad. It was going to be one of the warmer days so that meant capri pants. All 3 of us also coordinated our shirts to be matching.

DS and I had our free breakfast again in the lobby restaurant and we checked out of the Doubletree. The rooms at the Doubletree could not be beat. There was a huge bedroom with a t.v. and another living room/dining area with another t.v. There was lots of room for stretching out. Since we always had a car anyway, and almost always drove to all of the parks, the Doubletree was right in Downtown Disney and not very far from anything. DH was a member of Hilton Honors and upon checking in, the Doubletree offered us one of 3 choices - an extra 1,000 Hilton Honors points, free internet for your computer (otherwise it's something like $9.95/per day), or free breakfast for 2 per day. We chose the breakfast for 2.

Because of Hilton Honors, if we are staying in Downtown Disney, we choose either the Doubletree or the Hilton. The Hilton has some other advantages for us because we are eligible for the concierge level. Their standard rooms are not as big (unless you get bumped up to a suite), but the concierge "restaurant" more than makes up for it. DH and I stayed at the Hilton in the previous September trip and not only did they offer the free beverages and snacks all day, but the breakfast selection was great and they also had dinner selections which was enough for us for a regular dinner. This had changed from previous stays where the dinner was basically cheese and crackers and fruit. Now they had offered hot entrees, salads, vegetables, etc. and it really was enough to fill you up. Both places have nice advantages so basically, we check the rates and availability to decide.

My camera batteries had run out and I had to have my camera! DH had read about Goodings supermarket so we headed to the car to check it out. It was located in a shopping center very close to Downtown Disney. While there I got my AA batteries and 2 liter of lemonade. It seemed like a very nice supermarket and the bakery section looked good. We proceeded to the Dolphin and checked in.

100_0656.jpg

Here's a lobby picture of the big fountain inside.

The desk clerk was extremely wonderful and gave us a double upgrade to a balcony room and it actually had a view of Epcot also.

100_0638.jpg

These were the views from our balcony --

100_0639.jpg

Do you see the Eiffel Tower?

We immediately took the boat to MGM aka Disney Studios. DS wanted a photopass picture of him leaping in the air, and the photographer was very accommodating. We looked at the schedule and it was time for the Beauty and the Beast show and we enjoyed that.

100_0594.jpg

Then there was a High School Musical Street Show which was entertaining with lots of singing and dancing. It reiterated to DS to continue with his karaoke singing (our hard-earned college dollars at work) but in reality he was getting ready to compete in a talent show in college, so he got some ideas from their dance moves. Then I wanted to see the One Man's Dream Movie, (had never seen it before) but when we got there, it was going to be another 1/2 hour wait so we moved onto the Tower of Terror. I have never ridden it despite the best efforts of DH trying to get me on it. Just how scary is it? I did the little 5 story one at Dollywood and that was enough for me! I have ridden every other ride at Disney, however (except for Mission Space now that I think about it) -- but can't make myself do TOT. Then we did Indiana Jones and after that, it was time for our Prime Time Cafe reservation. We had never eaten there before and we were looking forward to it. We had heard that the wait staff love telling you what to do "just like Mom would" and sure enough, somebody hollered "no running in the house!" right when we walked in. We settled ourselves in the 1950s decor living room and waited for our name to be called. It was a little bit weird - everything in there was stuff that my parents had that I grew up with - especially the sunburst-style clocks and other knick knacks. I will have to say that we were more than a little bit disappointed with the menu and had a hard time finding something to order. DS and I ended up ordering the Fish Sandwich ($12.49/each) which was basically a big fish stick in a bun and DH got the chicken sandwich for $13.49 which was WAY overpriced. The waitress had comments which were pretty cute such as "I won't tell if you won't" but the food was just not that good. Plus, we were sitting in this room stuffed with 1950s and 60s decor and after a while, it got a little bit creepy. I was glad to finally get out of there and I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.

We took the boat back to the hotel - and soon would be walking to Epcot for the afternoon--

After a short break back at the Dolphin Hotel, we took the leisurely walk to Epcot by way of the Yacht Club and Beach Club. It was just before 4:00 and I wanted my free Visa picture. DS volunteered to veer off to get us fast passes for Soarin' and we agreed to meet in Innoventions in the free Visa picture line. (For those of you who don't know, from 1:30-4:30 you can get in a line which is located near the fire truck in Innoventions. You show the attendant your Disney Visa card and they give you a certificate. Then they lead you into a room with characters and you have your pictures taken. You then go to the photography shop near the Epcot entrance by the golf ball and you receive a free picture using your certificate). There were 2 families in front of us in line - so DS would be here in plenty of time. We waited, no DS. The first family went into the picture room. They came out... the 2nd family went into the picture room... still no DS. We let the next family go in front of us while we waited for DS. He didn't show. Finally, DH and I went into the picture room without him and had some very cute pictures taken with Mickey, Minnie and Goofy.

We came out of the picture room and there was DS sitting in chairs in front of the fire truck. He was waiting there the whole time. I guess there was a miscommunication on where we were supposed to meet! Anyway, he got the Soarin' fast passes. We immediately headed over to the photography shop, certificate in hand, and proceeded to choose our free picture. It was amazing - they already had the pictures in the system of what they had taken just 2 minutes ago. They were only supposed to let us have a picture of the special Visa photography session. However, since DS wasn't in the special Visa picture, they let us choose another picture. We chose the one of DS leaping in the air taken earlier and it turned out really nice.

We were looking forward to Spaceship Earth again since it was so much fun last time, but it was closed.

The next stop was Ice Station Cool with the free soda. I liked the ginger ale and the Fanta the best. Then we walked past the Epcot character spot and the line didn't look too long but DH started complaining. He thought he was too grown up to wait in a big long character line. Since I didn't have character pictures from Mickey's tent from earlier in the trip, we told him to just find something to do so that DS and I could have our character pictures taken. It was a funny thing, but just before we were ready for the first picture - guess who popped in just in time? He didn't think he was going to have fun, but he did. The photographers were really great and it's really nice the way they also take your personal camera to take a picture too.

We walked over to Imagination and did the ride - DH noticed the optical illusion pictures in the eye chart room for the first time and couldn't wait to tell us how he saw a girl with a beret and/or a man with a moustache in the same picture (depending on how you looked at it)! We were going to have to look for it the next time we rode the ride. Next we did the Land Boat Ride with no wait. Don't you miss the tour guide with the microphone in the front of the boat?

Our Soarin' FPs were ready so we rode that. It was great as always especially if I closed my eyes during the nighttime traffic scene (for some reason my eyes can't take it)!

Then we walked to British Invasion and listened to their performance. This was a must-do on every trip.

We decided to head back to the hotel by way of the Beach Club.

Here's a nice view from the Yacht/Beach Club.

We needed a little something for dinner (because Prime Time cafe was a Long Time Ago and I couldn't be getting a little bit cranky could I?) and the cafe in the Beach Club gift shop was about as far as I could go. It was fine for DS and me with a selection of sandwiches and salads and refrigerated items. I ordered the Riptide Salad ($8.19) where you chose the lettuce and ingredients and they mixed it up in front of you. I selected the mixed greens with everything they had and it turned out to be kind of like a chef salad including chicken. The dressing was a choice of ranch, caesar or vinaigrette which was also tossed in. I'll have to say, this was really delicious. DS ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich for $6.99. DH stopped at the Fountain Cafe in the Dolphin and ordered a Hot Fudge Sundae and we took everything back to the room. We forgot that the Dolphin restaurants took off 20% if you had a AAA card. Hopefully, I would remember in the future.

The Epcot fireworks started and we watched them from the balcony. Another end of the day at 9:00 pm!

Observations about crowds -- It was still fairly busy earlier in the day at Disney Studios. The Indiana Jones Stunt Show was packed, for instance. The crowds at Epcot later in the day were very manageable.

Next Report - Tomorrow is a 4 Park Day!!!

Disney World Trip Report for March 4, 2008

Me - 40-something
DH - 40-something
College Sweethearts married 23 Years!
DS - In College - Age 18
Beloved Beagle - Spry 13

This was going to be our last day in the parks and we were going to make it a good one with a 4 Park Day!!! We were hoping for a Year of A Million Dreams prize and this was going to be our last chance! We had seen only a few dream fast passes and Mickey ears on this trip so we weren't very hopeful. We got up and had a breakfast snack in the room and coordinated our matching shirts for the day. We decided on Animal Kingdom first since there was quite a bit of stuff we missed. We drove over in the Saturn Vue and parked in the regular (not AAA) lot. We took the tram to the front gate and decided that it was actually less walking than parking in the AAA lot. We got there before opening and watched the cute Mickey and Goofy pre-show in front of the Tree Of Life. Then we (and the rest of the park) high-tailed it over to the Safari Ride. By the time we all got there as a huge ensemble, it ended up being a 10-15 minute wait before we boarded the safari truck.

Here's a picture of the rhinos with a cute baby rhino too!

DS wanted to ride Expedition Everest so he got on that and was actually able to walk through the regular line instead of the single rider line. DH and I have ridden it in the past - but I'm not sure if we will do it again in the near future! It does make you dizzy with the backwards part. We walked over to Triceratops Spin (a favorite of mine along with Dumbo and the Camels) and we rode that with no line at all. Then we rode Dinosaur which was always fun.

A T-Rex outside of the Dinosaur ride --

After Dinosaur, we browsed the gift shops and I enjoyed looking through the fossils and rock specimens. I purchased a very pretty rock which was cut open, polished, and had purple inside ($3.95) which I thought was a very good buy for a souvenir. I'm using it as a pretty paperweight.

When we were outside of Dinosaur, a cast member started walking up to us, held out a bucket and asked us if we wanted one. I thought, "This is it ! The Year of A Million Dreams!" He was handing out Disney Vacation Club pins with Goofy on it and the logo - Heard the best kept Disney secret? It wasn't a Year of a Million Dreams prize, but hey, I'm not complaining, we each took one.

We had just about covered everything we wanted to do here on this trip, so it was on to the next park!

A big kimodo dragon lizard --

As we drove over to Disney studios, I saw an interesting thing. It was a Disney vehicle with a sign on the door which read, "Year of a Million Dreams, Cinderella Castle prizewinners". I guess they were getting ready to pick up the luggage of some lucky winner! If only that could have been us!

DH wanted to see the Mulch Sweat and Shears music show so he did that while DS and I rode Catastrophe Canyon. I still enjoyed the Canyon part but missed the tram going through the "neighborhood streets". DH said they had great '80s music and held the microphone in front of certain audience members to sing along. DS would have loved that! We did the Muppet Movie which was not very busy and we enjoyed it. Before we left, I had another assignment from back home - OWB (older, wiser brother) wanted me to price Indiana Jones whips for some kind of Halloween art project, he SAID. But they were way over the $15-20 he was willing to spend so that was out.

We drove back to the Dolphin for lunch at a new restaurant that we wanted to try. And since there would be a 20% AAA Discount, I was all for it! The restaurant was called Fresh Mediterranean. For $15.16 each (including the AAA discount, otherwise $18.95 each) it was a buffet style but not your average Disney buffet. They had limited selections but each one was made to your specific order. For instance, that day they offered rotisserie chicken, a panini, a grilled mahi mahi and a pasta dish. Then you continued further down the line for antipasto like olives, and garlic toast. Then someone made your salad and you could add the salad fixin's. They also had things like rice (I think) and other hot vegetables. But the eye-poppin' stuff were the desserts. They had a huge display covered with things like creme brulee, cakes, brownies, mousse, cookies, tarts - whatever you wanted they had. I helped myself to 7 different desserts! Okay, so each one was only about as big as a quarter! --that's how I could get so many! But they were all delicious. I would definitely do the Fresh buffet again. It was a lot less expensive than the other Disney buffets, it filled us all up, and especially if you love desserts, it was definitely worth it!

Next Installment - Epcot and Magic Kingdom with a Private Showing of Carousel of Progress!

Great posts! The beagle part caught my attention, I must admit! I volunteer for a beagle rescue. :thumbsup2

We're leaving on Tuesday morning, and I'm finding posts like yours very useful. Thanks!

:dance3: I've never seen three FUZZY rhinos before. Neat! I like the T-Rex photo, also. Very professional. Let's see: OWB, whip, and Halloween. I'll bet this guy is a riot! Keep your TR's coming.

Waiting for Part 8...

kerstfan1 -- I clicked on your blogspot and saw your Beagle pictures -- so cute! They reminded me of somebody --

Disney World Trip Report - March 4, 2008

Me - 40 something
DH - 40 something
College Sweethearts - Married 23 Years!
DS - In College - Age 18
Beloved Beagle - Spry 13

After eating at Fresh, there were still 2 parks to go! We headed over to Epcot in the car because we knew we would be going to the Magic Kingdom after. At Epcot we stood in the Disney Visa picture line again - this time with DS included - and got our free photo at the photo shop. Then we wanted to ride Spaceship Earth again now that we knew what to expect! We boarded our car and smiled for the picture. We enjoyed the ride and made our computer selections. We waited and watched for our pictures on monitor. Unfortunately, our monitors did not show our pictures at all. It showed the movie with just a regular cartoon character. We were a little disappointed that our pictures didn't "take" until I happened to look around at some of the other people's monitors. Two cars behind of us, (really ahead of us since we were turned around backwards) there was DH's face plastered on their monitor screen. Obviously, things were in a snafu state. When we got off the ride, DH also had his picture up on the big map in the hands on room. I can't wait to ride it next time to see if they've worked out all of the kinks!

Next, we headed over to Imagination. I wanted to see what "girl in a beret/bearded man" DH was talking about. There it was right in the eye test room along with other optical illusion pictures. Later I asked DH if he saw the elephant with 5 legs. He missed it!

We wanted to see Wishes tonight so it was time to head over to the Magic Kingdom.

100_0652.jpg

There were no lines! Here's what we did until it was time for Wishes: Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, Jungle Cruise, Aladdin's Camels, Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Railroad, Winnie The Pooh, Snow White, Buzz Lightyear (twice) and Philharmagic. The fellas did Space Mountain while I did Carousel of Progress. Someone said they might be tearing it down soon so I wanted to make sure I did it. I walked into the theater, and I was the only one there! The cast member came in and said, "You know the drill - no eating or drinking. And look for the Hidden Mickeys in the Christmas room!" It was a little bit creepy but special -- and I really enjoyed the show! I looked for the hidden Mickeys and maybe saw one or two. Hopefully, you will get to see Carousel of Progress before they do anything with it, but if not, here are some pictures for you --

The big double 4th scene in the theater --

I walked out and met up with the fellas and we went to find our spot for Wishes. We started walking across the bridge over toward the castle and figured that it was a good a spot as any. There was lots of room to spread out - it was busy but not packed. Main Street looked busy as always. Right over our head was Tinkerbell's wire. We couldn't wait for that. The lights dimmed, and Tinkerbell took off. She went right over our head and waved directly to DH! DH said she was waving to him to move outta her way! We could almost touch her and her sparkly green outfit. It was the perfect end to another wonderful trip.

It was 10:00 pm and we were tired and hungry. We could never have done a 4 park day if the weather was hotter or the crowds were heavier. We headed back to the hotel and grabbed a snack at the Dolphin with our AAA discount. We went to Picabu which used to be called Tubby's Cafeteria. We got an assortment of drinks, chips and fruit salad ($6.75) and ate on the balcony of our Dolphin room. Tomorrow we would be leaving.

Next Report: Somebody gets BUS-ted!
