The Beach at Vero Beach

Odd question,…. of all the pictures I’ve seen in the guidebook of the Vero Beach resort, I’ve never actually seen anybody “on” the beach. No umbrellas, blankets, beach chairs….no people.

Just wondering, do people go to the beach at Vero Beach???? I’m from the Jersey shore where the majority of my summer is spent propped up in a chair with a book, staring at the ocean and getting up only for the occasional dip in the water. Would a “beach” person such as myself enjoy Vero? Would I be able to fritter away the week laying on the beach?

there is very little beach at VB - and during a bad storm - there isn't one.

but during a quiet time - yes there is room on the beach for relaxing.

now swimming - kept in mind that the drop off is really close - so unless you are good swimmer it can be danerous. This area can easily get a rip tide. Now if you are good swimmer go for it!

Also the sand is brown - wish is one of the reasons I preferred the Panhandle - unless there is a storm - you can easily go swimming in the gulf - but everyone has different taste.

I love the pool at VB - very fun!!!

Some folks have complained of a mosquito or no-see-um problem at certain times of the year. I don't know if this would affect your desired beach lounging or not. Most folks mention enjoying beach strolls, listening to the surf and the beautiful views.

I always thought that it looked like all the shots of the resort had great lighting from the early morning sun, hence not many beach folks in the pics.

Interesting comments about the beach though. I saw where Vero was rated a top hotel. Looking forward to staying there sometime over the next 38 years

You mentioned the panhandle, that is the most beautiful beach I've seen.

But then again, I've only seen Myrtle Beach, St. Augustine (long time ago), and Hawaii. I'm sure the Caribeean has some gorgeous beaches too.

Yes, we always use the beach when we are at Vero.

Usually every other day we will rent an umbrella and two chairs and spend most of the day down there.

Our kids will build things with sand and my DH enjoys spending time in the water. He loves to ride the waves in. He's never had a problem with the water but he grew up in Florida and spent a lot of time in the ocean.

We usually ckeck out the water conditions on the board before we head down to the beach.

The noseeums are really only a problem at dawn and dusk and won't come out when the sun is shining.

We've never had a problem with the size of the beach. Most of the time, we have a whole section to ourselves and find it to be plenty big enough.

I have swam in the beach... Never had a problem... There are the traditional warning signs about Jellyfish, and other exotic animals...

The beach area is not huge... It runs the length of the resort, but is not very wide.. It is certainly wide enough though to throw down a blanket, lounge chair, or towell to read...

I personally love the beach at VB.. Here in Michigan, we have our fair share of beach time... The beaches usually tend to be crowded with people, BBQ's, and people partying... At VB, the beach is always laid back and relaxing..

If you are a "beach" person who wants to laze in the sun....you will love it. You don't see that many people because it is primarily used only by the DVC resort folks (many of whom prefer the pool). There is a public lifeguarded beach just a few yards down the beach where you'll find more people. In the other direction are private condos. These are primarily winter residences and many of the owners are older and don't necessarily laze on the beach. They also have pools and, of course, golf, tennis, etc., etc.

Do remember that it isn't lifeguarded so take care with yourself and children.

Maybe the sand is not as wonderful as that found on some beaches, it is comparable to the sand found along the Jersey Shore.

I thought the beach at Vero was quite beautiful. The sand was a light tan color and soft enough on the feet to walk. The water was a pretty blue green when the sun was shining. The beach slopes (because of the dunes). I thought Vero had a character all its own (yes, its different than the gulf beaches) but I think just as beautiful in its own way. There definitely was plenty of room to throw a blanket down and put up an umbrella and read a book. The beaches weren't crowded like the gulf beaches. It almost seemed like you were on a deserted island at times. I would definitely use bug spray because of the noseeums at dawn and dusk (we wore it all day in the form of a sunscreen/bug repellant just in case and never had a problem). In short, Disney's Vero beach was beautiful. It's on a barrier island by the way.

For those of us who don't have any beach nearby......I found the beach quite wonderful!!!! Much nicer than some of the Pacific beaches I have visited!!!

Thats one of the advantages of VB...........we were there July 7-12 this past month, the resort was booked solid, and there was never a crowd at the beach.Maybe at most 30-40 people at the same time at the DVC VB part of the resort-beach.
I will take this(uncrowded) any time over the crowded beaches at Myrtle,Virginia Beach,etc. It is like you have your own private beach when you are at VB.

We are pool people who usually use the beach for walking on and the ocean for looking at. You will mostly find me by/in the pool. But we have travelled with beach/ocean people and they had a blast at Vero. They would head to the beach around 9:00 in the morning and we wouldn't see them again until about 5:00 in the evening, except for an occasional visit. They spent hours playing in the waves and relaxing on the sand. I have seen nicer beaches in my travels, but for my friends the beach at Vero was perfect.

I love the beach at HH or Daytona but find Vero very shelly. I rinse my pool shoes a bunch of times and still find more tiny shells inside.

The surf can be very rough too.

I like the view, the restaurants in Vero, etc but for actual swimming prefer other beaches.

We just returned from our first visit to VB last Sunday. We did the camp fire sing along with the kids on Friday and I am still itching from the no-see-ums. Make sure your insect repellant has DEET, other repelants won't work.

The sand is very coarse with lots of shell fragments. It is, however, good for building sand castles. There are rental umbrellas and lounges available on the beach. They are not owned by Disney. Even though the resort was booked solid, the beach wasn't crowded.

Also, the resort is carved out of a forest of seagrape trees, so there is a visual barrier between DVBR and the beach. If you aren't on the 4th floor (we were in rm 2414), you probably wont see the ocean unless you take the foot bridge to the beach.

While narrow, the beach is pleasant. Also, you don't have to rent the louges. There was plenty of room for towels (at check in, the CM told us it is ok to take towels from the pool area onto the beach) and laying on the beach. There is even a towel return bin located on the foot bridge next to the outdoor shower.

We love Vero Beach. We swim, look for shells and walk the beach area. The umbrella chairs were all rented every day we went. Best of all it is never too crowed. We also enjoy Destin, Florida beachs on the gulf.
We did not enjoy Daytona beach. Cars would drive in front of us as we sat on the beach. Wind blew the sand . Nothing like a sandy sandwich and drink for lunch, yuk.

I'm from Jersey also, and believe me - you will LOVE it. It is GORGEOUS compared to the Jersey shore - go for it - you will have a terrific time on the beach and in the water!

I'll second LindaDVC about rough surf at VB. It tore the watch right off of DS's wrist! Probably not the best patch of water to swim in, unless you're a REALLY strong swimmer.

We loved VBR though--it was sooooo relaxing and friendly!

You do need to be careful.

My son was upset about the shoe while I thanked the Lord that he was okay--

A couple taking a walk saw us with one shoe and had spotted the other and a ways down the beach.............. they tossed it up on the sand and Chris was real happy about finding it!

In a few hours we head to Hilton Head!

If the water is really rough at VB they will close the beach. That has happened to us on a few occasions. If it is hurricane season and there is something brewing in the Atlantic it will usually kick the surf up quite a bit.

On the occasions when the beach was closed we just found something else to do. We had plenty of activities to pick from at VB!

DH is the only one who really goes in the water. He's like a kid on that beach and could ride the waves in for hours. It does do a number on him, though. He really scratched his back the last time we were there and just looked at it and laughed as he went back in salt water-OUCH.

We just got back from a day trip to our beach - sounds like Vero is similar in the "short" area like Delaware. We have very little beach due to erosion, which makes for tight quarters! (Wildwood ends up getting our sand! )

Anyway, thanks everyone who gave info! I still think a combo Universal Orlando/Vero trip would be in the cards for us! Natt

I'm not sure whether my feelings about Vero came through. I absolutely love it! I'm not sure how to describe the beach, "natural" or "wild" seem to come to mind. But, those terms are meant in the very best way. It's like you've stumbled onto a little bit of paradise that has natural beauty, not necessarily everything "perfect". I don't spend much time on the beach when I'm somewhere like Ocean City, NJ. I could spend days wandering the beach at Vero.
