The backwards helix on Expedition Everest

I love the backwards portion of Everest, it's my favorite part of the entire ride. However, I am also a coaster nut.

I will say though that if it is your first time riding and you are worried about that section, it would be best to avoid sitting in the back row on the train unless you want the feeling of going head over feet and your butt in the air.

Anyone ever notice if using Bonine or the Scapolimine Patch helps with the feeling when going backwards? My kids really want me to try this but that backward part has me worried. I could handle the old Star Tours ride ok.

The G-force during the backward section is 3 while the forward G-force is 2.2.

For comparison's sake:

RNRC - 4.5 g
Mission:Space - 2.5 g
Space Mountain - 3.5 g

I don't do outside coasters at all. I love Space Mtn & RnRC because there are no major drops. I love the drop in Tower of Terror. I enjoy Everest but I made the mistake of doing it 3 times in a row and got really nauseous. The only thing I can think of to cause it is the backwards part. I'm okay if I just ride it once and do something else and then go back.

Love EE EXCEPT for the backwards helix. Don't know if it's because I was one year older than the trip before or what, but it really gave me a headache this past summer - but before that it had never really bothered me. DH, who is a coaster enthusiast, got so sick we had to go back to the room for a couple of hours so now he will not ride it.

I don't like coasters much and I hate big drops, but I love EE!
The backwards drop doesn't affect my stomach live normal drops. I don't have motion issues though.

Good numbers, but they can be deceiving. The 2.5 on mission: space is sustained much longer than the 4.5 on RNRC for instance.

As for the backwards portion on EE. Never really bothered me, I can say I have seen some die hard coaster fans get very sick afterwards just because the motion was backwards. It's all going to depend on your individual physiology, really no one can tell you for sure if your going to get sick. Gotta ride atleast once to know. I never get how others even perceive the feeling they are inverted on the backwards portion and I have literally tried to get that sensation. For those that feel an inversion have you ever ridden an inverted coaster? Just wondering.

Loved EE! But to answer your question- the backwards part literally sucked the hair clip out of my hair. I had to grab onto it! *lol* Bonine does help BTW. I LOVE roller coasters but I get motion sickness so I take it all week when I'm there. The only thing I can't do is Star Tours and Mission Space- but I think it's the screen/motion combination.

ha ha, the last time I rode EE, I got to ride in the very front for the first time, when we got up to the part where you're about to go backwards, they were scattered all over the top of the mountain. I have never seen so many scrunchies and hair clips in one place outside of a store. You're lucky you managed to hang on!

Disagree with several posters here. I am a coaster enthusiast too and love Everest but I have to cringe during the backwards part just hoping it gets over with. It IS a motion sickness issue AND a headache issue, but only if I ride it 2-3 times in a row. It is a rather intense feeling and IMO tougher to take than going forward down a huge drop. Being in the dark and going backwards is much harder on the equilibrium than going forward in the light.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't feel motion sickness but it def messes with my head. Makes me mad actually. I remember riding Shock Wave at Great America 6 times in 30 mins when I was younger. That thing jerked ya around so much and had 6 loops in it I think. But I think just one EE ride at a time for me now that I'm sadly getting old. =( I didn't think it would happen soon!

I love coasters and I don't get motion sickness. The backwards helix in the dark really does a number on your stomach. I definitely feel it and keep going back for more.

The backward portion also got my neck! Keeping you head pushed back against the head rest, as previously stated, does help though....

I love coasters, I've ridden on plenty...and not just tame Disney ones...and the backwards part on EE gets to me. It makes my head hurt, which stinks because I love the rest of it. I can't ride it more than once each time.

I'm a wimp when it comes to coasters. Only did I get the nerve to trip Everest this last trip. The backwards part for me wasn't too bad. I wanna say it slightly feels like your going on a backwards loop. But then I've never gotten the courage to go on a roller coaster with a loop and that sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Maybe I say that because instead of my stomach feeling like it's moving, it's my brain that feels the movement.

That's hysterical! Maybe they should put a warning on the sign about "may suck your hair accessories out" lol

Yeah the backward part makes me yuck. I can only ride it once every couple hours. It makes the blood rush from my head. Not a big fan of that feeling. I still love the ride though. Just wish that part wasn't so intense.

The only time that EE really bothered me was when I rode in the back. I now request to ride in the front and the backwards portion just seems a lot less intense.

Loops on coasters don't feel that much different to me than the rest of the coaster lol Being upside down happens so fast usually that you barely feel it.

Let me start by saying I am not a roller coaster person. DD loves them so I leave those to her and DH. Somehow DD convinced me EE wasn't bad. Wow, I have never been so freaked in my life when that ride went backwards in pitch black! I was shaking when I got off. But then again I am a total woos and even had other young kids who rode it laughing at me.

I love EE, but it is intense for me. If I'm not feeling absolutely tip-top, I stay away from it. It's not a stomach issue, it messes with my head.:earsboy:
