I took mine. Probably not the BEST parenting decision. That said, while the movie was very violent, it was a cartoonish violence that isn't very real. Also, the previews were actually more objectionable than the movie. She loved it, fwiw.
I'm not a mom but I was a nanny for several years. I would say no. It is a little too real and intense in some scenes.
I believe that parents know their children best, so if his age is on the cusp, obviously the parents would decide. But five is just too young. I do think it would different if you were showing it at home and could stop the movie to answer any questions and to stop if the wee one gets too scared. It is superheroes, after all. They are great fun!
Because of the violence I would say no. I wouldn't take my 5 year old.
There is a great website called http://www.kids-in-mind.com/ that gives "ratings" for movies in regards to profanity, violence/gore and sex/nudity. You can see what they say/how they rank it to decide. This movie gets a 7 in violence/gore.
(***One word of warning about the site..they describe scenes so you know what the possible gore/violence/profanity/nudity/sex situation is so it is of course FULL of spoilers and information about movies and what happens..just something to keep in mind before viewing it).
For the sake of your fellow theater-goers, I wouldn't take him.
I don't think the violence would scar him for life, but I think he might cry, whimper, freak out, etc., and disturb the other patrons around him.
That is a big pet peeve of mine at "adult" movies. I have been to several with kids crying and freaking out and begging to leave with their parents responding with "get over it" or "cover your eyes" but listening to some kid being upset/scared really ruins the experience for others.
DH & I went to see Dark Shadows last Friday and someone had brought their small child. They were close to the front and the child kept talking (loudly) and they never did take him/her out. It agitated me and we were near the top of the theater so I know it was very annoying to those who were closer to them. I would have been majorly ticked off if I had been much closer to them. Ummm, yeah. It's rated PG-13 and I'm sure the kid had no idea what was going on but I wouldn't have brought my 3 - 5 (possibly younger) year old to see it.
I guess my kids are weird, the violence in this movie wouldn't have bothered them and they would be able to stay focused and quiet the whole time. Of course saying that, if they been upset or loud I would take them out of the theater. But yes, like I said above, I have seen the movie and I would have taken one of my kids if they were 5 and wanted to see it.

We saw a couple who brought two girls, I would say 7&8 to Dark Shadows last weekend! Um hello, vampire movie, pg-13, wth were they thinking? There were a couple scenes that made me squirm with my 16 year old sitting next to me!!! Not to mention the blood and all the killing!
My nephew will be 5 next month and loved it. One of my friends took their 5 year old who wore the Captain America costume that he had from Halloween and he loved it so much they plan on seeing it again as a matinée once he is out of school for the year.
I'm sure if either of the kids had a problem with it they would have removed them from the theater.

I took my child that age after talking to friends who had seen it, and reading kids-in-mind.com. He loved it. This was the first superhero movie I've allowed him to see. The violence was mostly cartoonish and non-disturbing, but there were a few brief moments when I felt it was a little too intense for a young child. The language was very tame for a PG-13 but there were a couple of choice phrases.
The previews were scarier and more objectionable than the movie. Not just the movie trailers, but the TV show commercials that ran before the trailers. I had to take one of my older children out until the movie started because some of the previews were too much. The actual movie did not bother them at all.
