What is GPS?

"GPS stands for Global Positioning System. A GPS receiver uses signals broadcast by satellites to calculate its position on the earth. Auto GPS navigation systems use position information and a large database of maps to give real-time visual and spoken directions to virtually any location.
Why use an auto GPS receiver to navigate at Disney World?

As anyone who's spent significant time driving around Walt Disney World knows, it's a large and confusing place. Driving your own car or a rental car is faster and more flexible (albeit more expensive) than using Disney's transportation. The rub is that you must navigate a somewhat confusing complex of streets and freeways inside Disney property, almost none of which have normal street signs.
Disney's on-property navigation signs are good, but they don't always take you on the most efficient route, and for the hotels and smaller destinations it is often necessary to know what general area of the World you need to get to. Only once you reach that area will the signs start displaying directions to specific resorts. If you don't know (for example) that Saratoga Springs is in the Downtown Disney Resort Area, you may have trouble navigating to it just by following the road signs.
Using a GPS receiver is a great way to avoid many of the navigation hassles associated with driving in and around the World. In theory, you just select your destination from the GPS unit's internal list of hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, etc. It calculates an efficient route and gives you spoken navigation instructions to get you there. If you take a wrong turn, most modern units will just calmly recalculate a new route and start giving you new instructions to get you back on track. In unfamiliar locations, a good GPS is a huge advantage, allowing you to focus on the road while it gives you the upcoming turns. It has complete knowledge of every road and it never gets mad at you because you took the wrong exit.
The flaw with this rosy scenario at Walt Disney World is that most current GPS units have a very limited selection of POI (Point of Interest) locations within the Disney World property, and what they do have is in many cases poorly placed. Many restaurants and hotels are left out, and the points for the various major parks are often placed not on the entrance to the parking area, but in the middle of the park itself. Faced with a point that is not actually on a road, GPS units will route you to the nearest road, which may be a service road that runs backstage. If you follow the GPS's instructions you'll likely find yourself at a security gate nowhere near the actual entrance to the park.
To help prevent this situation, I've created a file of accurate POI locations. Read on for the details!
The MouseSavers POI File

I've created a file of POI locations for just about every place you might need to drive while on vacation at Walt Disney World. All of the major Disney theme parks, water parks, shopping areas, golf courses and hotels are in it, plus all the MouseSavers Preferred Hotels. It contains all of the Disney sit-down restaurants, a handful of distinctive Disney counter-service restaurants, all of the Downtown Disney restaurants, and the restaurants and dinner shows discussed on MouseSavers.com. There are also nearby grocery stores, drugstores, medical facilities (urgent care and hospitals), and selected Disney outlet stores. The Universal Orlando area is also covered to a smaller extent.
For now, the files are only available for recent-model Garmin, TomTom and some Magellan units. If you have a GPS that allows custom POI uploads and would like me to make a version of the POI file for your unit, let me know. I'll add new formats if there are enough requests."

FYI Sales tax in Disney World

Most of Walt Disney World is in Orange County, where the sales tax rate is 6.5% and the hotel tax rate works out to 12.5% (6.5% sales tax + 6% resort tax).
Disney's All Star Resorts are in Osceola County, where the sales tax rate is 7% and the resort tax is 6%, so the hotel tax rate at those three hotels is 13%.

Disney Outlet Stores Close to Disney World

http://www.mousesavers.com/otherwdw.html

"You can get great deals on Walt Disney World theme park merchandise at nearby Disney outlet stores:

For Walt Disney World souvenirs such as t-shirts, sweatshirts and mugs (and sometimes more exotic stuff), you can't beat the prices at the outlets. Sometimes you will even find current merchandise that is still be offered in the parks, at up to 50% off. "

Where can you get medication around Walt Disney World?

Disney has anticipated their guests every need, even an upset tummy. Asprin, Pepto-Bismol and other over-the-counter meds are available in many shops on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom, in most retail shops in Epcot Future World & World Showcase, and at Disney MGM Studios and the Animal Kingdom. Its not on display. That would ruin Disneys perfect fantasy, you know. Remedies are kept behind the counter, and you have to ask for them. If one shop doesnt carry your preferred brand, theyll direct you to one that does.
If you forgot your prescriptions at home, the nearest drug stores are the Walgreens in Lake Buena Vista (407-238-0600) and Turners Drug (407-828-8125). Either will phone your home pharmacy and/or physician and get you a refill until you get home. For a small fee (about $10) Turners will also deliver your medication to any Disney or non-Disney Orlando area hotel.
Some tourists have also had good luck phoning their pharmacy at home, and asking that a refill be FedExd to them, with overnight delivery. This option can be expensive the minimum FedEx charge is about $30 but if you forgot your heart medication, its worth it.

The new hotel looks great but I'm working on my DH to get him to agree on taking a trip to Disney's new resort in Hawaii, Aulani that opens up this August, I'd love to go there next year.

So I couldn't wait any longer and I had to tell the kids. We did an easter egg hunt and hid a special egg that said they are going to WDW. They were so excited and couldn't stop talking about what rides they wanted to go on. I think I'm at the 48 day mark today and it can't go fast enough!

We're also going to tell the kids this weekend with an egg hunt. I found huge easter eggs and the creative disigns board made great signs & tickets to put inside them. I can't imagine what their reaction is going to be. I'm going to bust keeping our trip a secret! Just gotta hold it in a few more days.
TooManyCars: Thanks for posting link to the Art of Animation Resort. It looks great & will hold our family of 5 :). We haven't even been on our first trip but I'm already thinking of going back when the resort opens plus Fantasyland will be done with it's makeover.

I have finally nailed down the plans for the big reveal this weekend! The kids don't yet know that we are going to WDW, so the plan is to tell them Saturday night.

We have an acquaintance who travels the country appearing at sci-fi conventions as Boba Fett. He will be in town this weekend at a convention. So, we are going to dinner at the convention hotel and in the middle of dinner he's going to come in with a box to deliver to our kids inviting them to Star Wars Weekends. My 4 year old is going to explode. He adores Boba Fett. I'm hoping to get it on video.

If for some reason this plan falls through, we have a back up, but pretty sure this will happen. I'm so excited! I'm tired of keeping this secret!!!

This is SO AWESOME!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I'll bet he's going to explode!!!

Good luck with the video and if you would like, please consider posting this on You tube for us on the June Dis boards to see.

I am smiling just thinking of how your kids are going to bananas    at the news of your trip!

What, when and where was your best meal inside of Walt Disney World?
My 'fine dining' experience at WDW is pretty limited, we're character meal kind of people. I think my favorite meal was Boma!

Why was it the best?Large variety, wonderful flavors. Ribs to die for, the most amazing coconut tiramisu!

What did you eat?Ribs and Coconut Tiramisu. And some other stuff...but mostly ribs and coconut tiramisu :rotfl:

If you have eaten there again was it just as good as the first time? We've never been disappointed (except I've never seen the coconut tiramisu again. I assume it's because I ate so much of it the first time, they decided it was not cost effective :rotfl2: )

Do you have photos? nope, not a one!

You loved it, but did DH, DD or DS love it too? Everyone loves it and it's always on our 'must do' list.
