For our stay we had the Disney Dining Plan. As most people agree you get way more food than needed and really get spoiled by the great restaurants. With all the miles and miles of walking we did through the parks I managed to gain 4 pounds in 8 days. 2 desserts a day is just ridiculous but hey its vacation and who's going to turn it down?

At the GF we didn't get a chance to eat at Citricos or Narcoossees. There's just not enough hours in the day. Next time. We did eat at the GF cafe, 1900 Park Fair, Gasparillas and one morning we had private dining breakfast in the room. The GF Cafe had excellent food at both breakfast and lunch. Gasparillas has good quick food and is really good for late night cravings (open 24hrs). We had the character dinner at 1900 Park Fair and while the kids love the characters the food was disappointing. Its a buffet restaurant and the food is no better than mediocre buffet quality food. We found that to be true at Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood Studios as well. Disneys buffet restaurants are subpar when you get spoiled by the normally outstanding restaurants they have that arent buffet style. The exception to this was Chef Mickeys breakfast at the Contemporary. The breakfast buffet there was excellent. I wish we had gone there more than once on this trip.

By far the best dinner we had on our trip was at Tutto Italia Ristorante in the Italy section of Epcot. The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. Try the Farfalle Alfredo.

One of the benefits of going in January was that we didn't need reservations every time we wanted to eat. We had reservations for some meals but most times we just showed up and never waited more than 15 minutes to be seated at any restaurant.

As for quick service meals you cant go wrong with Gasparillas at the GF. It's nice to be able to get a quick burger or pizza at 2am. The food is pretty good too. Better than your average fast food place. I found 2 places in the parks that get you excellent value for a quick service meal credit. In the Magic Kingdom try Cosmic Rays in the tomorrowland section. You can get rotisserie chicken, ribs and so much more great stuff and it only costs 1 quick serve credit. Theres also a side patio to sit and eat that is right next to the castle and has great views. In Animal Kingdom theres a place called Tuma Tuma that also has great burgers and sandwiches where you get a ton of food for just 1 quick serve credit.

We had dinner at Kona in the Poynesian where I had a Teriyaki NY Strip that was really good. Next time I want to try the Pomegranate Barbecued Pork Chop.

Sadly, the worst dinner we had was also at the Poly. The Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show was a huge disappointment. As I said in earlier posts the food is mediocre and most of the show is corny with the exception of the fire dancer at the end of the show. There were many disappointed people walking out of that show so I know I wasn't being picky. It will cost you 2 table service credits or $60 per adult. Stay away.

For anyone with an iPhone the Disney Dining app is essential. It lists every restaurant in every park and hotel including the menu, prices and anything else you need to know. I also frequently used the WDW Wait Times app which shows real time wait times for the rides. WDW Park Maps and the WDW Park Hours apps are good to have also. All these apps helped so many times and the dining app is incredible.

Our first couple days there the castle had a crane behind while they were taking down Christmas lights. After a few days the crane was gone but when you got close to the castle you could still see that many lights still had to be taken down yet. That was odd.

When the crane was gone the castle returned to its usual glory.

I'll put more pics in another post so as not to make this post too long.

Are there daybeds in all of the standard RPC rooms? I don't remember having one in our room but I really hope we'll have one. Thanks! BTW - fantastic pics mike48!

mike48, thank you for the thorough review and pictures.

We are returning to the GF at the end of Feb. and I can't wait.

Mike48 -- wonderful photos!!! And thank you for the dining reviews. Would you say the iPhone dining app is helpful if you already know pretty much what's out there from reading online? (Wondering if I should download it). We liked the WDW wait times app and used it on our last couple of trips.;)

There was definitely one in our room. Not sure if they are in all the rooms, but if you really want one make sure you request in on your reservation so that they know you want it.;)

mmears,
The dining app is definitely a must have. It lists the entire menu for every restaurant in every park and every resort. It also shows which restaurants and snack shops use the dining plan and how many credits. It shows the breakfast, lunch, dinner and kids menus and the prices for every place. It even shows what sides come with the meal. Its basically like having the full size menu of every restaurant on Disney property in your back pocket. You can also enter your dining reservations into the app and have it keep track of your entire dining schedule. It's really good to have.

If I don't have use for Dining Plan, why do I need this app?

mike48 - thanks for the review, and posting the photos, they are lovely! And thank you for the info on the dining and wait times apps, I'm definitely gonna look into that for my daughter's iTouch!

roomthreeseventeen - I don't get the dining plan, but think the dining app would be useful, especially if you're trying to pick something on the go. If you're near Tower of Terror, for instance, and wonder what is on the menu at SciFi.

Ah, okay. We have ADR's planned for almost every meal, so that's not too relevant for us.

So do we, plus I've gone over the menus online here. That's why I've hesitated when I've seen it on the apps menu... The WDW wait times app is free, though, so I got that one right away.;)

The wait times app won't work on the iTouch since you'll need either Wifi or cell service for it to connect to the server. The dining app will definitely work on the iTouch. I have it on my iPhone and my wife has it on her iTouch.

mike48, thanks for sharing both your report and the photos. :surfweb:

We just returned from a trip. We didn't stay at the GF, but ate dinner one night at Citricos. I absolutely loved the look and feel of this resort. I'm trying to talk hubby into staying here on our next trip. But, I just wanted to come on here and say WOW, it's beautiful! Plus, the food was wonderful. I hope to try V & As next time and possibily Narcossees.

Hello all! We are booked at the GF April 16-24 in a Theme Park View room. We have never stayed at the GF but have visited several times. We spent this past Christmas at the Poly and spent many evenings at the GF. If anyone has any recommendations for us (room requests, must-dos at the resort, etc) I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! :goodvibes

Anyone have a sample room service menu? Does the food come from one of the restaurants? Can you order from any of the restaurants for room service? Also, using the Deluxe DDP - any difference? Thanks!

roomthreeseventeen ~ I was reading about your wonderful upgrade. Did you receive an updated reservation after the CM made the changes for you? I just get worried reading about "promises" made by CM's, as many times, they just don't or aren't able to follow through with them. I had someone in GF management make a promise to me too and upon arrival, denied it and wouldn't even meet with me. I hope you don't have any problems, it definitely wasn't a pleasant way for us to start that particular vacation.

I wondering the same thing about the upgrade. When we were upgraded at the Poly and CR, we didn't know until we checked in. How did this upgrade work?

Isn't Citricos fantastic? The GF is beautiful and the restaurants are one of its greatest strengths IMO. We love dining at the GF even when we don't stay there. :goodvibes

Isn't it great that it is so easy and fun to go between those two resorts?

My only request has been marina view when we've booked garden view. Others love the view of the courtyard so I'm no help there.

Be sure to enjoy the great restaurants at the GF. Perhaps book a spa treatment? Enjoy the music in the lobby in the afternoon and evening but it sounds like you may already know that!:cloud9:

Welcome to the GF thread, both of you!:grouphug:
