We just got back....first stay at CR. We were there 12/12 through today. Loved the Contemporary! The location and the view cannot be beat.

We got an odd numbered room, as requested (thanks to all of you!!), on the 9th floor. We were in the very last room on the CM side (MK view). When I realized we were right above CM I was a bit nervous because I'd read some complaints about how loud it can be...especially at 7am, and we were planning to have a sleep-in kind of trip. Well, we could definitely hear CM when we were awake but, it never woke us up or kept us up. Not a problem at all...once you get that song out of your head.

The other mild complaint I remember reading here was in regards to Mousekeeping. That was probably the low-light for us, though nothing I would even mention had it not been a topic of discussion already. I think they provided the bare-minimum. My last stay (in October) was concierge level at AKL so, maybe I have an unrealistic expectation. But our last stay at Poly was not concierge and I feel the Mousekeeping was much better.

Our room was clean, but not sparkling (if I'd had some cleaner I'd have touched up a few spots, lol). Our Mousekeeper knocked on our door prior to 9am when the "Do Not Disturb" sign was up twice. The staff in the hallways were not at all friendly and one this morning was nearly rude. No additional toiletries were provided after our arrival day, even after the original shampoo bottle was very near empty and the soap was nearly down to a sliver. We had to call for washclothes on one day....no new ones were left and the used ones, which we had re-hung to indicate we'd like to reuse, were gone. And not one towel animal all week. Obviously, that would have been an extra and was certainly not expected....though I admit, I have come to expect some extras from WDW. Oh, and one day when we returned to our room there was a large puddle of water (I hope) in the floor....no idea if that had anything to do with Mousekeeping but, we couldn't figure out where it had come from!! But I think most of that really is nit-picking as I don't think I'd be mentioning it had it not come up here and I wanted to provide a full, honest impression.

The front desk staff was awesome, we were afforded a late check-out today, the view was unbelievable, and the walking path to MK is the best! I don't truely feel I have any complaints.

I felt the transportation options went very well. We used the walking path, took the monorail, took a water launch to the Wilderness Lodge to see the Christmas tree, and took all the buses. No long waits, no hold-ups at all. Apparently we missed an extremely long delay on the monorail by mere minutes Saturday night, however. We were eating in Citricos and half of the party at a neighboring table was delayed over an hour on the monorail. It sounded terrible! But we lucked out.

The sinks definitely do not drain fully but, I didn't find it to be much of an issue. I was concerned we'd have a hard time washing toothpaste residue out of the "trough" but, it seems to rinse well....just some residue water is left. Didn't bother us, and neither did the lack of counter space (both of our toiletry bags fit between the two sinks).

The beds were comfy and the rooms are HUGE. And we loved being about to hear the Wishes and Holiday Wishes music on channel 20 while we watched the show!

We only ate at the Contempo this trip. Couldn't fit The Wave in and couldn't get an ADR at Cali Grill (but have eaten there numerous times and can attest to its excellence!). We actually had a CM ADR and canceled it. We never saw Chip and Dale there and that's who I was going for. It was fun to watch Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto make the rounds from outside our room, though.

About the beach question above....I believe I saw that there was a beach by the garden wing but, I didn't actually experience it for myself.

Anyway, great trip and the view of the castle, especially with the Christmas lights, is worth every cent I paid to stay there. I think we still like the Poly best (just find the theme more to our taste) but I love the CR as well! Thanks to everyone here for all the info!

Just found out my hockey team might be starting out next season in Finland so, we didn't book the bounceback in order to save for that trip....but I sure hope we can get back soon!

Great review HockeyChick! Could you share what type of bounceback was offered?

We were there 11/29-12/6, and the bounce back was 40% off deluxe and 45% off deluxe villas.

As far as the beach, it is in the backside of the resort. The castle is on the front, so it would not be good for firework viewing; however, I thought I heard that the water parade ended on the CR beach side. It would probably be late though.

Thanks! Oh well, I don't suppose you need a beach to view fireworks if you have your own balcony!:yay: That bounceback is is pretty good..that is the rate I booked at this time.

Just back last night from our first stay at the Contemporary. We've found our home!!! It was just so convenient.

Thank you to everyone on this thread (and the photo thread and the older threads :goodvibes ) for all of the information in preparation for this trip.

Visiting the other deluxe resorts was part of our plan this trip (for both Christmas decorations and pressed penny collecting). Most of them were simply gorgeous. And the theming was great. But, at the end of a long day at the parks, I want my room to be convenient to food, to the hot tub, to the shops. And there's no place better for that than the CR. Just hop on the elevator and go down or up to our destination. Way better than hiking across a resort and then back after dinner or swimming.

We had so much fun this time, we upgraded to annual passes. Leaving is always sad. But it was easier this time knowing we'll definately be back within 12 months.

Thanks again everyone. And to those heading to the CR soon, you'll love it!!

Every post like this makes me feel more and more like I made the right decision for our family!:wizard:

Oh my god! I just read some really disturbing news! Over on the theme park strategies thread, I read that Cinderella's castle is undergoing major rehab starting in January-March. Of course, I booked an MK view and will be there in February. Now I am in panic mode. The whole point of me staying at the CR and paying all the money for MK view was to see the castle, the fireworks, the lights changing at night, etc. What happens to the castle during a refurb? Are you still able to see the lights changing at night, or is the whole castle hidden? Would it be worth paying all the extra $$$ for MK view if you can't see the castle? I am dying here, someone give me something positive to calm me down!!! :sad2: :sad1: :scared1:

ok, guys, still flipping out over here and now won't be getting to sleep very easily. I was hoping you could confirm something. I read on the wdwmagic site that the castle refurb will be on the front of the castle. From the CR, you get a side/back view of the castle, right? So conceivably the MK view won't be all that obstructed if they are only working on the front? They won't board up the whole entire castle, right? THe rest of the castle should still be okay with lights changing color, right? Someone please give me some good news...CR Resort Fan, where are you when I need you? WDWKook? Will my MK view still be ok? I'd switch to Bay Lake view, or a garden wing, but there is nothing available for my stay...would you guys risk it, or should I play it safe and get a garden view at the Poly? GULP!

I don't know anything for sure, but I *highly* doubt that they would board up the entire castle. What I would expect is that depending on the severity of the refurbishment, to work in small sections at a time. If it's like the back-castle refurb, then you can expect maybe a 12-20 foot wall from the base, obviously not a factor where your view is concerned. If a crane is used, typically speaking it used in the AM hours and lowered in the evening hours... making the area more sightly for pictures. The castle is refurbished in varying degrees almost every year, and usually it involves paint and cranes and not much else.

On that note, theme park view rooms face the west, so you have more of a profile/side view of the castle. It's not head on - and I'd be willing to bet your Magic Kingdom view will be a good one with or without the construction.

I saw pictures of the refurb wall that was used when the back was refurbed, and it was designed to blend in with the castle. If you are really that concerned, why not call Disney and see if someone there can answer the question because we don't know the extent of the refurb planned. As far as CR Resort Fan, he is currently at the world on vacation. I imagine that he is enjoying his vacation and not lurking here. I would imagine that if he does have time to check in later and can find your answer he will post.

I am in the same boat as you for our January trip. We have two CR MK view rooms. One for our family and one for grammy and pop pop. I am not freaking out here. I was at first. But there has been no official statement regarding the castle refurb. If there is a refurb, I am sure Disney will be doing the same as they did in the fall and do small sections. There is no way the whole castle will be obstructed from our view at CR. WDW is very professional and wont disappoint many guests that are paying for deluxe rooms and views no matter what discount or season they are visiting. I am keeping my confidence in Disney.

Thanks for this response. I feel a lot better now. Exactly what I needed to hear! :thumbsup2 As long as I can see some sort of changing lights from the castle at night, I'll be good :goodvibes

Yes, I know CR Resort Fan is on vacation there right now :goodvibes I believe he's in Clearwater Beach. I just meant that he always gets to the bottom of this information for us pretty quick and I know I tend to rely on his timely responses to help me make my decisions! :rolleyes1 Maybe he'll have heard something about it and will share when he gets back?

Yes, I am also trying to be confident this morning. Not so much last night before bed, but starting to finally calm down! I just needed to hear from someone that even though the view may be a little obstructed,, that it would still be worth it to see it from our room. If you could, I'd love it if you could check in here after your vacation and let me know how it was?

You were up way past my bedtime yesterday (LOTS of shoveling here).

Castle Cosmetics

12/19/09 Cinderella Castle will be completing a partitioned cosmetic refurbishment at the beginning of 2010. The Fantasyland side of the Castle received a little-publicized cosmetic refurbishment this past September, where an elaborate construction wall and scrim was used to minimize the visual impact of the work. Tentatively set to begin January 12, 2010 the Hub side of the Castle will undergo a similar, but larger refurbishment. As with the first phase, Cast are reporting that graphic scrim depicting the Castle will be used to minimize the visual impact of the refurbishment. In addition to the cosmetic work on the Castle, the moat will be drained for infrastructure work to be conducted as well. During the refurbishment the DreamLights will be removed, so there will not be an additional period of work to accomplish this task. The second phase of this cosmetic refurbishment is tentatively set to be complete in Late March 2010.

Here is a link to a couple of photos of the September 2009 (small) lower section refurb.

My guess is that it won't be too much of a visually disruptive impact to MKVs, especially at the CR. They may also not actually start on time since the 1-12 date is tentative;).

We always book BLV, so my comments probably won't prove very useful. And, I suspect if you call the CR to inquire they will not be very helpful either since:

1. You're not really calling the CR, your call is actually going to a call center in another part of FL.

2. They'll tell you they know nothing about any Castle refurb.:sad2:

3. They want to sell MKVs so they'll most likely minimize any fears you have.

If you 're really worried, I suppose you could save some money, switch to BLV and watch Wishes from the observation deck, beach or CA Grill. But, I think all of your MKVs will be minimally impacted and you'll have a great time! Don't worry:santa:

:thumbsup2 ive seen they are going to remove the water from around the castle, maybe they are working on the base. they just painted the castle about 2 years ago, we have pics with the crane arm in it. they do seem to put it away in the early am. i was watching the guys painting the side of the castle hanging off a crane arm in a steel basket.:scared: not foe me.:lmao:

Ahhh, WDWKook, I knew you'd dig something up for me ;) I think I'm going to ride it out and hope for the best. There is actually nothing else available to book at the CR, or I would do just that. I was thinking of switching to BLV or a garden wing, but the only thing left is either $4000, $5000 or $12000 more!:scared1: Can anyone confirm what side is the hub? Is that the front? I guess as long as I can see the castle spires, and the colors changing, I'm still good. I wish there was someone I could call that would actually be able to confirm the impact and how high the "scrims" will be going up...you hit it on the nose about calling a CM...we usually know more than they do! :rolleyes1

Lissiesmum, I think you are so funny and cute:) Now I am worried and I don't go until May. I truly understand where you're coming from spending all that money on a room with a great view and not being able to maximize on it.

Thanks for the nice compliment! :flower3: That made my day!

Let's just hope that from the CR, we won't notice anything going on at the castle and it will appear just as it would on any other day!

I will be happy to report back! We are staying at CR from Jan 27th-31st! I am really not that worried anymore after going through various threads. I don't think it will be THAT bad. Think happy thoughts!!!:santa::hippie:;)

We just returned from an MK view at the CR. What we loved is that you don't just see the top of the castle (which is my perspective on any MK views from the other monorail resorts). You actually see the entire park. My husband loves telling people that we could see the splash go up when the logs went down the last drop of Splash Mountain.

The lights on Main Street at the Crystal Palace were great. You could easily see Thunder Mountain too.

So a refurb on the "front" of the castle, won't ruin the full MK view.

Further, as great as the view is, you really are a bit away. If you look at the photos of the "back" refurb that WDWKOOK linked, you'll see that the scrim was a very accurate reproduction of the castle. If they do indeed do something similar for the front and considering the distance you are at at the CR, I think you'll still have a very good view.

To answer your question about which angle you're looking at the Castle, could I suggest a clock. If the Fantasyland entrance to the castle is at 12, the hub is at 6. And I'd say our view was between 4 and 5 on the clock. We were right in the middle of the Contemporary (halfway between the BLT end and the Chef Mickey's end).

I'm sure it will be fine.
