The "Add a Useless Fact" thread....

Here's an interesting one:

Castaways Travel, a Houston-area travel agency, offers an all-nude flight to Cancun Mexico. Once the plane reaches cruising altitude, you are allowed to take off all your clothes and roam about the cabin.

I love this one!

In a survey conducted in 2000 by Kimberly-Clark, it was found that men prefer to fold their toilet paper, and women like to wad it.

Oak trees do not produce acorns until they are fifty (50) years of age or older.

In the 18th century, the Vatican forbade anyone to make copies of Georgio Allegri's Miserere mei (late Renaissance choral piece for nine parts). In 1769, 14 year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart heard this piece performed in the Sistine Chapel. He then went home and wrote it down from memory.

Possibly an urban legend, but still pretty cool for Mozart and Allegri fans. If you've never heard the Allegri, you should. It's my favorite choral piece of all time, and yes, they are all boys!

No one knows how Mozart died, and no one knows where he is buried (FACT!).

A ten year old mattress weighs double what it did when it was new, because of the -ahem- debris which is absorbed through the years. That debris includes dust mites (their droppings and their decaying bodies), mold, millions of dead skin cells, dandruff, animal and human hair, secretions, excretions, lint, pollen, dust, soil, sand and a lot of perspiration, of which the average person loses a quart per day.

I think I'll go vacuum my mattress, it's only a year old, so it may not be that bad!

Some useless facts from my Mom's home town

Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada

The Bay of Fundy has the highest tide differential in the world. During high tide water from the bay changes the direction of the Saint John River

The Confederation Bridge that connects Prince Edward Island to New Brunswick is the Worlds longest bridge over water that freezes

Saint John is home to Canada's first public museum originally known as the Gesner Museum, named after its Nova Scotian founder Abraham Gesner, the inventor of kerosene. The museum is now known as the New Brunswick Museum.

Suzanne Vega sang backup on The Smithereens album "Especially For You." She was also once Pat DiNizio's boss and had to fire him.

Joey Ramone asked Bruce Springsteen to write a song for The Ramones. He wrote "Hungry Heart" but wisely recorded it himself on the advice of his manager.

Neil Young was delerious with fever when he wrote "Cowgirl in the Sand."

The cover of Five For Fighting's "America Town" CD is actually a mural in Seaside Heights, NJ that was painted when MTV's Summer Beach House was there. It says "Seaside Heights, NJ" not "America Town."

French Poodles are actually not French. They are German hunting dogs - water retrievers. The French are credited for the breed because they made them house pets and shrunk them down from the size of Labrador Retrievers.

The word "poodle" is derived from the German pudel, short for pudelhund, which means "water dog." Pudeln in German means "splash," and is also the root of the English word "puddle.

The "froo froo" pom pom haircut you see on show Poodles is their hunting clip, and not some circus get up or sissy haircut on a sissy dog. With the bottom half of its body shaved, the animal was more buoyant and could swim more freely. The long mane and hair around the chest were left intact to keep the poodle's vital organs warm in the cold water, and owners also kept the hair around the joints to protect them from cold and injury and to help prevent rheumatism. Shaving the hair around the face left the poodle's mouth and eyes free so it could fulfill its retrieving responsibilities, and tying the hair on a poodle's head into a "top knot" also kept hair out of its eyes. Owners eventually tied these knots with brightly colored ribbons to help them identify their dogs from afar.

Yes, marrying a woman with 4 poodles gave me a VERY QUICK education in the breed ;)
