Cool! Thanks for posting these. I always wondered if that "royale with cheese" line from Pulp Fiction was actually true...and it is!

I'll take the Big and Tasty Bacon with the potato wedges, please. I love how it's listed as "Farmkartoffeln". Sounds like, "Stuff that fell off the farm truck, but we fried it up anyway." :rotfl2:

We did try the Big and Tasty Bacon! It had a weird smokey type sauce on it. That was :crazy2: We stuck to Cheesburgers after that! :rotfl:

Yes, it is! And this would have been a movie quote which I would have recognized... :goodvibes You might see that here in Germany we now actually have a "Hamburger Royal TS" the TS stands for Tomate (tomatoe) and Salat (means lettuce here, but can also mean salad). I think they only sell the TS version now which was very popular when it was a "special"

Well, Kartoffel is potato.... But I like your explanation - I guess you read it: farm cart off fell. :rotfl:

So many things to comment on from the last couple of days, but so little time and I remember only a few...

Liesa, it was wonderful meeting you and your family, I’m glad you enjoyed it, too! I’m very much looking forward to the next installment – wasn’t there something with a wheelchair? :scared1:

Looking for the hamster und finding bird seeds reminded me of one of the many unbelievable adventures of my boss. He is one of the people who experience things on a nearly daily basis, which boring people like me experience once in a lifetime. I would also recommend never to travel with him... So, the story. He drove from Berlin to see his mother, which is a three to four hours drive. He stopped at a gas station about 20 kilometers before reaching his mothers house. On the last kilometers he smelled something strange, then, just some hundred meters before his destination there was smoke coming out from under the hood. He got panicky and called the Automobile club for assistance, they told him to stop the car and get out immediately, they would call the fire brigade. By now he was only 100 meters from his mothers house, so he drove there, stopped got out of the car and ran for cover. But nothing happened. It even stopped smoking after a while and his BIL got curious and had a look... and found the smoking carcass of a mouse on the engine...

:faint: I think I would have died right then and there! I hate mice!

Well, keep your eyes peeled...you never know when a movie quote might pop up. But you still have to be faster than Glenn.

::yes::

It's more fun that way, don't you think? :rotfl2:

You got that right!

Whew! I think I'm finally caught up now. Boy, it's really easy to fall behind around here. :rotfl:

I really loved all the pictures from your tour. I'm a complete fan of historical tours and things like that. It looks just fascinating. It looks too like you had a wonderful meeting with Magdalene and Katrina. What a wonderful oppourtunity for you all to meet. I will admit that the picture of their parents with the swirly faces creeped me out a bit. It made me think of the move The Ring where if you watched the videotape that would happen to your face in all the pictures. I don't know why but that movie just scared the beejesus out of me!

Congrats on the new car too! I just love that new car smell. :)

Geez, check the school closures at 5:30 AM, go back to bed until 9:00, get up, check the thread, and find that ya'll have filled up an entire page full of Mickey D's chatter!! Of course there are also hilarious stories of smoking mice (not the kind holding a hookah), movie quotes, and more of Glenn's super cool smilies. Yee-haw!! Today is the1st Annual-In-A-Very-Long-Time load up the car day. Groceries, ALL the decorations (I got put in charge of that this year- the challenge: turn a condo development's community hall into an inviting place to feast), our bags, firewood, and all the kids need to fit into the minivan. I CAN DO IT!

Catching up a bit...

Congrats on the car! And on the yellow belts.

I hadn't realized that the job you almost got was gift wrapping...yesterday, I was at a paper/craft store picking out some pretty paper to use decorating the bookstore where I work (and I can tell you you definitely dodged a bullet not taking a retail job through the holiday season!). A man brought a book up to their wrapping counter -- a normal, slightly oversized hardcover, probably a $35 book -- and asked if they could wrap it for him.

The woman there informed him that to wrap that book, in brown butcher paper, would cost $29.95.

That's right: $29.95. !!!!!!!!! And ribbon cost extra. The truly shocking part of this story is that after only a moment's pause, the man said OK.

This made me think that clearly I'm in the wrong business. Clearly I should be opening a pop-up store across the street from this craft shop and wrapping stuff for half the price. :rotfl:

Congratulations on your new car. Looks very nice!! :) I'm sorry you didn't get your straws though. What a bummer.

More lovely countryside photos. I am once again reminded of the train in Epcot.

I hope the next part of the trip is much better and you're only teasing us with suspense.

In case things go beserk here, like often they do, and I get behind on my getting-out-of-town preps for tomorrow, here's wishing you all a truly memorable and meaningful Thanksgiving!

I can't help but to reflect on how strikingly different this one will be than those of years past for us. No more reading Scripture with our Kazakh friends, bitter cold temps outside, pipes that freeze up just because, or being utterly in awe and grateful that all of us had made it through another year without anyone getting deathly ill or hit by a car. Part of me deeply grieves yet, for in those struggles comes an abiding peace that we are WELL taken care of.

I am also humbly grateful for all of you as well. I can indeed call all of you some of my closest friends. Enjoy your holyday!!!

As someone already said, the word means foot!

And you are right, it is not a B, the letter is this sign: ß and it is a type of S. The letter is used to show that this is an unvoiced S - in case anyone would be crazy enough to want to find out more about this special letter, Wikipedia will be your friend. :goodvibes

But I rather thought it was very funny, what some people on this thread made out of it! :lmao:
Thanks for the Wiki Link. It was a good review.

We interrupt this trip report for something I thought was an absolutle a must read for anyone who is actually more than casually interested in what my former life was like in Kazakhstan. If you truly want an in depth peek into one of the holidays they just finished celebrating take a look. But BEWARE!! It is VERY, VERY graphic. Our family has seen a sheep sacrifice, and eaten the delicious national dish called beshbarmak a million times. I think this will certainly enlarge your worldview a bit...

http://www.mydailyphotofix.com/2010/11/korban-ait-or-its-just-a-really-bad-day-to-be-a-sheep/?ref=nf

Wow! A very in depth peek indeed!

Congratulations on the car, and great update. Love the picture of your girl with the little statue in the dry fountain. Very cute!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Liesa.

Love the new car...especially the "no payments". :)

Can't wait until the Disney portion of the trip makes its "debut."

Is that pecan pie I see???????

Liesa, I hope you and your family have a most wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving! There is going to be so much going on, but make sure in all your planning and preparation you take a little Liesa time to stop and just enjoy all the many blessings in your life for which I KNOW you are truly thankful!!! :)
Don't we know it. :lmao::lmao::lmao:
OUCH!!!! :rotfl2:

Tell me about it! I knew there had to be only a few places. But still has me some what stumped since I'm not finding a sign with a close-up to be sure. I guess I'll have to guess by deduction

Ok, got it noted.... funny how UN competitive you all are! :lmao:

Yes!! I'm so glad you finally found something. I'm curious...why did you go with a car instead of a Mini-van, aren't there still six of you at home to drive to and fro? :)

That is our next purchase. This one is mostly to be used for a commuter car for Mike, so large wasn't on the criteria list. He's threatening to put flames on the front. He says ALL 6 cylinder cars should have them. I hate to contemplate what he'd do with an 8. :rotfl2:

I'm thinking your right, sometimes it's hard to get an older generation to do the thing that's best for their health. I'm even starting to notice myself not wanting to go in to the doctors for routine things due to not wanting to hear the doctor nag me about stuff. I haven't had my cholesterol or other blood tests done since I had it come back slightly elevated a few years back, the doctor started harping on me about going on medication almost right away. It would have to take much higher numbers for me to be convinced to go on any kind of medications. I realize docs are CTOA when it comes to this, but I think they do happen to jump the gun on these things a bit because of liability. If I knew I was at serious risk I wouldn't mess with my health, I've had tests come back one stage away from stage 1 female type cancer so I do know when to take things seriously. Those four and then eventually twice a year appts. were taken very seriously for 5-6 years. I've been green lighted to once a year again, have been for a while now :goodvibes Praise you Lord! :worship:
All this blather to say....I think as we get older it's harder to walk into a Dr.'s office not knowing what's going to be said to you out of fear. I think it may have to come down to accountability to help us to do what we know we need to do. It worked for me to get into these last batch of tests I needed done. I confessed to friends I wasn't making it a priority and they helped me stay on task to getting there, one friend took off of work to meet me at one appt. because she thought I didn't need to be alone while finding out results. Everything turned out okay, and I'm glad I have my family/friends to help me be brave. Getting older is for the birds I tell ya!

FINALLYgot word that he is going in tomorrow morning!! Can't wait to hear what he says.

As for annuals- what can be said? Haven't "done" mine in over 3 years. Heck, maybe I'll just book a flight and have the TSA take care of it for me.

TEXAS! :rolleyes1 Okay it probably will really be to Salem or the Mt., but you can't blame a girl for tryin! :goodvibes

Duh! You already said it would be the Mt.

Texas is tempting, but since both Zach and Anara are getting baptized this Sunday, we'd better stick around here.

oh wow, what a crazy few days, I'll be thinking of you. But also glad he isn't too far away from a "real" hospital. Sounds like he needs to get his behind to the doc still though. :confused3

well........ yes and no. I've seen some higher level adult black belts (3rd and up) break their hands. It's NUTS! I really really REALLY can wait on the brick. The competitions are even scarier, in their own way.

I think the most Evan has done is about 2 1/2" thick in total combined boards which would be a combination of mediums (1/2" and large 1"). The video on FB I think shows him breaking through 4 of the mediums but he went for a lot more on his international test (which I didn't post, may or may not have video'd it). For the mystery break I think on the international he had a few that might have been 1 1/2-2....

Dad still won't budge on Thursday, so the plan is set. We're going up to the mountain Wednesday- Fri. AM, then to Salem Fri PM- Sat. PM. Sunday back in Portland. I'll let you knwo what the cardiologist says later.

Still need to get to that video you posted... I can't even imagine my little girls being black belts!!! Ah well, I guess she's the epitomy of "well-rounded"- dancing at balls and doing flying kicks at an opponent. Funny, I'll bet you could find some scary similarities there! :lmao:

Congrats on the New Car Liesa !!!!!!

Thanks, Rosie! So far we haven't had to call a tow truck. :thumbsup2

Wow, it really seems to me that now your TR really starts for me. So far I knew quite a bit of the story (and especially of the last updates), but now we venture into the part of your trip where I know as much (or even less) as your other readers!

I had a good laugh at the fact that one of the pics you posted with lovely German landscape is a picture of a sewage works!! The one with the round ponds... :lmao:

And Mikki should not have worried about the noise her luggage made - Katharina did exactly the same thing last Sunday! :goodvibes

I thought this would be about the point it'd get fun (ner) for you!! Get ready, get set....

I was wondering WHO would pick up on that!!! See, doesn't matter WHERE I go, sewage is just my karma.

I would imagine that with so many travelers coming and going out of there, clicketty-clacking luggage would be a "normal" sight. It was rather annoying to us, but honestly, I never did notice anyone even take a second glance.

Yep, no competitive people in this crowd! ;) This is the first time I've really cared about the sign on the outside instead of what awaits on the inside....... :confused3

Enjoying??? It's driving me bonkers..... :rotfl:

Nice update! Sad this part of your trip has come to a close. Only on the DIS would people hang on every word of someone who went to a train station and rode a train....... :rotfl2:

It's DRIVING you bonkers??

But it was such a fabulous train ride- NO ONE chucked any choco doughnuts, and this time we spared Deutchland hundred of Euros in bags.

First off CONGRATS:woohoo: on the new car!! Or what we like to call new to us car! :rotfl: And you'll be ever so grateful for the Anti lock brakes!! Especially with winter coming! Really your getting 1-3 inches of snow already???

New to us car- I likey!

We have had some weird weather here lately. It was in the 60's the last two days, there was a cold front coming from Canada, it was pushing against the warm front from the south and caused all kinds of THUNDERSTORMS not heard of in November here in Wisconsin. There were two TORNADO's too that were reported south of where we live! Crazy! Now the cold front has come through, we went from 60 degree weather to 20 degree weather all in a matter of hours! :scared1:

First snow day of the year here. I swear Oregonians are such pansies!!! It snowed about 1 cm, and they closed school. :sad2: I remember in Flagstaff, AZ where I went to school and student taught, it had to snow like a foot before they'd even think about it!

Second great update! Looking forward to more and your next flight. Are you flying from Munich? I could tell you a story about that, we flew home from there it was a little crazy let me tell you. We almost missed our conneting flight to the US!

Thanks!! I think it'll be fun to see a change in venue now that we move on to bluer pastures. ;)

We flew out of Frankfurt, as we always have from Germany. NOt this trip over, but last we almost, I really do mean ALMOST missed one from DC to Frankfurt. Running with 5 kids and luggage SUX big time!!

Congrats on the new car, Liesa! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the Disney stuff. :goodvibes Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Carissa!! Glad you're still around!!! Happy Thanksgiving to you, Chuck and the kids!!

Oh, you gave me that feeling of when it's time to leave a place, but you just don't want to. Nice update. :)

I was going to comment on that too! Liesa and sewage.

It's that walk/ride/flight of shame. I hate it.

Sewage and I just get along so well. What can I say?
