Hello everyone, welcome to my latest sort of trip report! This is going to be very different than my normal ones, for this I’m going to be doing some throwback trip reports!

Over the past few months my mom has been sending me a bunch of old photos from our trips over the years (all the way back to 1986  ), and I have absolutely loved seeing all the old photos of Disney and seeing how much has changed! So I decided to put together this throwback TR of sorts to share these pictures since I wouldn’t be surprised if others love seeing the old school photos of Disney as well!

I’m still not 100% certain how I’m going to set this up. We’ve taken dozens of trips since the 80s, and I don’t want to do full standalone TRs for each, so right now I think I’ll keep everything here and just do mini reports for each one and I think I’ll just change the title of this report to note what trip year the most recent post is. (this is all still up in the air, still need to dig through tons of pictures that mom has sent, so I have too much time to change my mind :rotfl:).

I’m also thinking I’ll start at the more recent trips that were at least a decade ago and then work my way back in time, mostly because the more recent ones I have digital files so that’ll take less time and I can get started on sharing (need to scan in all the older photos). I’m also hoping to be able to post side by side pictures of retro vs modern Disney, but we’ll see, I may be biting off more than I can chew here!

Now for the mini-reports themselves, for the more recent ones I (obvs) remember much better than the ones from the 80s, so there will in theory be more narrative, and the super old ones will be mostly pictures. BUT, starting in the early 90s I did keep a daily journal, and during Disney trips I would write down every little thing we did, so I should be able to provide some decent information on those trips. Granted, those journals are all at my parent’s house currently, so I either need to take a trip up to MA to grab them or let my mom go through my “secret” drawer to send them to me. I’m not sure if I’m ready for my mom to look in the secret drawer yet…:rolleyes1

Anyways! Hope you all enjoy this little experiment and like going through all the old photos just as much as I do!

Before we dive into all the retro Disney, here is a little sneak peak from 1996. This is the view from the BC prior to the villas being built and the trees growing. So cool we could see SE back then from the room!

This trip in 1996 was the first trip where I really fell in love with Disney, and begged my parents to go back. Fortunately, they also loved it, so we started doing yearly trips from there on out, which is why I now have hundreds, if not thousands, of photos to go through! Not a bad problem to have, and thankfully I took this week off for a staycation, so I actually have time to start sorting through everything!

This is an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing. I never got to go to Disney growing up in the 80s/90s, so this is a great way to see what the parks were like back then. It will also be a wonderful trip down memory lane for you and your family as well.

Thank you! It is so much fun going through these old photos, so I can't wait to really dive into this. It's amazing how much I forgot about from back in the day, it's amazing to see all the changes!

June 2013 Part 1: Travel day

This is a more recent trip, but in keeping with the retro vibe I wanted to start with a trip at least a decade ago, and I figured since this was my dad’s last trip to Disney prior to this past December, it would be a good place to start since it kinda ties in with my current TR.

The thing that surprised me the most about going through these photos is how much has changed in the past 11 years. Like I 100% forgot there was an arcade on the Boardwalk back then, and the hub in the MK had a lot more green space and less concrete, oh and many more trees! (not as many as back in the 90s, but still more compared to these days).

We went this year June 3-12, and we did A LOT! This trip we did the surfing at Typhoon Lagoon, Dolphins in Depth, the chefs table at Victoria and Alberts, and the Wild Africa Trek. Not to mention other amazing meals at some places that sadly do not exist anymore. Oh, and we also got hit with a tropical storm this week that hung around for 4-5 days, so you’ll notice in many pictures we’re carrying umbrellas or are just downright soaked. Rainiest trip we’ve ever done, but we still had so much fun!

Now, I’m not entirely sure why/can’t fully remember, but this trip my parents came down to DC to stay with me the night before the trip so we could all fly down together. I’m guessing it’s because on our prior trip we flew separately and while their flight down was fine, mine turned into a complete nightmare, but we’ll get into those details when I talk about that trip (also why I will never fly out of LGA ever again).

I did get a pictures of my cats hanging out on my suitcases before we left.

So, I’m a bit surprised by this picture, it looks like they had the luggage airport to hotel room delivery even back in 2013, I thought that was more recent, but the yellow tags on the bags makes me think that they were doing that even back in 2013! (Maybe I’m wrong and those tags were for something else?!?)

Anyways!

The flight must have been uneventful since I have no memory of it, yay!

Once we got there I got pictures of the fake-o-rail and of course the DME bus (RIP).

This trip we were staying at the BC, at this point we hadn’t fully fallen in love with the YC and the BC was still our preferred resort. We got two rooms for the extra space, and we requested connecting rooms, but ended up having one room between ours.

Not too shabby of a view!

We of course got photos of each other from the balconies!

Once we got settled in we got changed and headed out to Epcot to start the fun!

Next up: June 2013 Part 2: La Cava for the First Time Ever!

June 2013 Part 2: La Cava for the First Time Ever!

We took tons of pictures on the way into Epcot.

I feel like they don't have nearly as many chairs out here these days.

Aw, the pretty planter pre-skyliner days.

Once into Epcot we apparently bought the photopass card, back then you got an actual physical card for them to scan. I think I still actually have this somewhere…

Magic bands were about to come out, but when we went this year they were still testing them, we had hoped to be test subjects, but no luck for us, so we just had the plastic room key/ticket (think they were called Keys to the World or something like that).

We made our way over to our first stop of the day, taking pictures along the way!

Aw, I miss the fountain.

Our first stop today was La Cava! This was our first trip since it had opened, and since this was a birthday trip for me (my birthday was like a week after the trip), I had requested going to La Cava for my birthday.

We got lucky and arrived just as a group was leaving so got seats right away!

We started with the avocado margarita which I had heard so many good things about, and it did not disappoint!

After finishing that up, I had wanted to try more.

Now, they had previously had margarita flights on the menu, but had recently discontinued them prior to our trip, which I was a tad upset about since I had wanted one, but the CM upon seeing my birthday button told me they still had the glassware, so he’d work some magic and make a flight just for my birthday! WAHOO!!!!!

These were all so good. I have no idea which ones they were, but it was so nice being able to try them all!

After finishing up at La Cava we strolled through WS towards the IG taking pictures on the way.

Maybe it's just the storm clouds that make it look greener here, but there seriously looks to be more plants here than these days.

It was time to head out and get ready for dinner!

Next up: Cat Cora’s!

June 2013 Part 3: Cat Cora’s!

This evening we had reservations at Cat Cora’s Kouzzina restaurant on the Boardwalk. I will admit I had no idea who she was, but my mom loves cooking shows so was super excited to eat here since she actually knew who Cat Cora is!

We made our way over to the restaurant and once we arrived were seated quickly.

For dinner I got a steak, and I have no idea what my parents got. :rotfl2:

I believe when we made the reservations we mentioned it was my birthday, or perhaps we told our server, but at the end of the meal they brought out a birthday cupcake for me!

We all loved this meal, my mom still talks about how sad she is that this place closed.

After dinner we headed back to the BC and had an early night since the next morning would be super early!

Next up: Magic Kingdom!

I'm in for the throwbacks! I have a lot of pics of me as a kid at Disneyland for those visits. Our first to WDW was not until 2002 when I was already an adult!

So fun! Loving the retro look back. That 2013 was a DECADE ago blows my mind. I feel like the 80's were 20 years ago. I miss the days you could somewhat easily get a table in La Cava.

This is so fun!! I think about doing something like this All The Time and just never got to it. So glad you are documenting your old trips and excited to follow along!

This is pretty close to the first time we stayed at the BC. It was love at first sight and have returned to the BC more than any other resort. :)

I remember that the YC was one of the first resorts to test the MagicBands.
This evening we had reservations at Cat Cora’s Kouzzina restaurant on the Boardwalk.
I remember this restaurant. I wasn't a fan of it. ;)

Love the throwback idea!
Andi and I got to be in the testing magic band group that year and it was awesome. We could still use paper FP and the new 3 FP picked before hand and use the MB for those. We loved it 😍 My how it has changed!
I love going back and looking at all our photos from over the years, so fun!

Yay! I'm so happy people area excited to see the throwback pictures, I'm having way too much fun going through them all. I actually have a few trips from the 80s and 90s at Disneyland as well, but we didn't visit all that often so I don't remember much unfortunately.

I know, I'm shocked 2013 was over a decade ago, it's crazy. Ever wilder is I don't feel like my first TR was all that long ago, but it was only three years after the 2013 trip! Time is just flying by!
Love this. Thanks for taking the time to do this .
Thank you! Happy to take the time to do this, I was actually planning on scanning in all the old photos anyways since we wanted to have digital copies, so I figured I might as well share some of the good ones. It really is so much fun going through all the old ones!

Thanks for following along! You should do one too, it is so cool seeing how things used to be!

This was our first trip to the BC as well! We loved everything about it and it became our home resort for many years!

Oh really? We really wanted to be test subjects on this trip, oh well!
I remember this restaurant. I wasn't a fan of it. ;)
Haha, we only ate at it this one time and really enjoyed it, but I assume since it didn't last it may not have been everyone's favorite!
Love the throwback idea!

That's so cool you got to do the magic band testing! And how awesome is that you got the 3 preselected ones on top of the paper ones!

June 2013 Part 4: Magic Kingdom

This morning we got up nice and early, had to make it to MK in time for rope drop!

We arrived in time to watch the welcome show at the train station.

Small aside, while I love having that hour-ish in the morning on Main Street before park opening, I do kinda miss the welcome show at the train station.

Our first stop this morning was Splash!

We ended up riding it twice in a row!

After Splash we made our way across the park, taking pictures on the way!

Our destination was Space!

Aw, this was back when my dad could ride it.

After Space we did our favorite activity, took more pictures!!!

My goodness, look at all the trees there used to be in the hub!

Also, remember when we used to be able to add fun frames and images to our photopass photos before downloading them? I miss that.

We somehow found ourselves in Fantasyland next, and of course took pictures!

We even took at peek at what would become 7DMT!

We took a ton more pictures around the park, I’m not sure if we actually rode any rides, but it looks like we spent more time getting pictures than anything else! :rotfl:

Next up: More MK!

June 2013 Part 5: More MK!

At one point I bought my first pair of Minnie ears at a cart in Adventureland!

I have SO many now, this was the start of an addiction ::yes::

At some point it started to rain, which was the norm this trip, thanks tropical storm. So of course we did what any logical person would do, took more pictures!

We seriously took hundreds of pictures this day, I’m really starting to think we only rode Splash and Space and then spent the rest of the day taking pictures. :rotfl2:

Also, I wonder if that big ol rock is still there…

And then we took more and more pictures….

I believe this green grassy area is now a walkway, you can see the image below from Google of what this area looks like now, wild!

(more recent image of the area from the previous picture)

Next up: 2013 Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade!

June 2013 Part 6: 2013 Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade!

At some point we headed towards the front of the park and up to the train station to watch the parade. I guess at this point the internet had not told everyone about this great spot so we arrived shortly before the parade and got front row spots with hardly anyone around.

That evening we did something, I have no idea what, after taking hundreds of pictures this day we apparently stopped taking pictures after we left MK!

We were really into night swims back then, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we just spent the evening at the pool and grabbed dinner down there.

Next up: June 20213 Part 7: Wild Africa Trek!

I love that you have all these old photos to go through - thanks for sharing them! I'm not a morning person so rarely made rope drop but that show at the train station was super cute. I have to say, I miss the old color scheme for the castle. I much prefer the gray to the pink hues. The trees and green spaces were nice ... now it's just wall-to-wall people. Looking forward to your "retro" pictures from the other parks!
