SET TIME: 7 A.M.

MIND SET: DISMAL

The Genie character in Aladdin frequently celebrates his freedom by shouting, “I’m free! I’m free!” I thought about how one can approach an article dissecting the ins and outs and controversy over the newest roll out of Disney’s Genie Service. It’s so broad; discussing the retirement of FastPass+, saying goodbye to the old and in with the new. How we all lost our minds over the overwhelming new information about the “optional mandatory” Genie program at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

The service is optional because we can choose to not pay to play. It’s not “free” as the Genie often declares; how ironic. Mandatory because, hey, is it really optional? I have no idea. We could talk about how much is too much, where you draw the line, and comparisons to Universal’s options. The perks and extras that we all get with Disney Genie, the options have been laid out for you already, the intense technology conversations about virtual queues, and whether or not the IT hold up to the new offerings. We could really spend much time on these issues.

But let’s narrow us down, reign us in to the elephant in the room we are all really discussing:

SEVEN A.M. !!! 7 A.M. !!! WAKE UP!!!

So if you don’t already know, Disney wants you to wake up at seven a.m. ON YOUR VACATION. If you weren’t already up and out at rope drop before, you’re getting up now! Luckily we can now “pause” our early wake up call for retrieving Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group times on their virtual queue system. Yay! However, it’s not all over yet! If you weren’t up already grabbing a morning breakfast mobile order service time for your babies sleeping in the resort room, you will be up now!

The new Disney Genie+/My Disney Experience app will be having you wake up at 7 a.m. to do the following:

–Retrieve Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure new attraction virtual queue

-Pay for your day’s select E-Ticket Lightning Lane attractions, if you are a resort guest at 7 a.m.

-Pay for Genie+ offering Lightning Lanes for lower tier attractions, resort guests at 7 a.m.

-Retrieve Web Slingers attraction virtual queue if you are in Disneyland Park

-Wake up to rope drop

-Wake up extra early to benefit from thirty minutes early park admission for resort guests

Now, while everything we are learning is still so new, there are rumblings unofficially that you may be able to purchase the Genie+ service at midnight, not the actual selection of a ride reservation, the night prior to your park pass admission. If you have a vacation package, or a date-based ticket, you may even be able to purchase Genie+ service when you purchased that package or ticket.

Disney wants us up and out. They want us to leave our rooms early for revenue, to be on property for breakfast and pay to play. They want to balance the weight of afternoon/evening guests surging into concentrated areas. I don’t mind paying for extra perks, that’s my choice, but I do mind the set time, and the mindset. And I’m actually an early riser! I do rope drop, I do breakfast. I’m the first on my resort bus to the parks. But I want to enjoy my mornings. I want to do my thing. I don’t want to “think” or compete, or concentrate; I want my coffee. And some people, perhaps it’s you, want to sleep in on vacation!

If you choose to sleep in, you may do so. However, you are at a parks disadvantage. You may not be able to utilize the Genie + service because the system may be at capacity. And remember, sleeping in may not offer you the guaranteed Do Not Disturb bliss. They do, at anytime, enter rooms for security and safety policies implemented in 2017.

When I go to sleep, I do not want to have all this swirling around in my head. Will I have FOMO (fear of missing out) if I don’t participate? Will I be awake in time, meaning BEFORE 7 A.M.? Will I wake everyone else up fumbling around for my phone? Will I actually “win” my Remy boarding group, call back times, paid programs? And if I don’t, how will that affect my mindset for the rest of my day? Shoot, I forgot to charge my phone. Ugh, the alarm will wake my toddler. Which attractions will I choose for the Lightning Lane anyway? Will my kids now start fighting because they can’t agree on the two I’m allotted? So now I have to just fall asleep I guess thinking these random thoughts wondering why I can’t just do this at 10 p.m. or whenever I really want?!!! Stressful indeed.

When I go to Disney, I like my planning to be done. I love the pre-planning process. Then when I step foot off the Magical Express bus…(oops….) I mean my car service (because the free bus is gone soon, too), I am worry-free, planning done, and now I can just enjoy my time with my family. No more planning. But instead, I will be up at 7 a.m. (did I mention the time yet in this article?!) and PLANNING. And if I don’t, and I am a planner? That won’t work.

For all the moms just trying to get their kids up and out, adding this to the morning resort chaos and refillable mug treks for Dad back and forth, good luck to you, you will need a morning break by 9 a.m., and good luck to your teens. That will be fun, especially if you need their help with the technology! Waking up a teen, yay!

Oh Genie from the wishing lamp, how I wish…

1.) you would let me sleep.

2.) you would let me be.

3.) understand I am a human on a vacation.

Well done!

I agree and I, too, am a RD person at Disney.

My kids are adults but I don't like this 7 am be up and ready to use my phone. Last trip in February, I gave myself a mini headache by 6:55 am, waiting to get my RotR VQ (which I did but boy, that stressed me out).

I don't mind the extra pay to play, that is everyone's option but if I want to participate, I need to be up and set by 7 am to stress to hope to get what I want, every flippen day. Why Disney?

Can't we just preplan if we want and get it done and take my money? And, for those that fly by the seat of their pants, they can try too at 7 am, 10 am or 3 pm. Let us have the choice.

Agree with everything said here!! The ads for Genie+ claim that they were listening when people said they wanted more sponaneity. With the old 60 day system if you wanted to plan you could - want to be spontaneous - also OK. This plan is MAKING us all be spontaneous! NO option for planners. With AK opening at 8AM by 7AM I will be at the park with no plan in place. This will make me way more stressed out.
And starting EACH DAY of my vacation stressed over what I will "get" is worse than the one day 60 days out booking F+ which I can then spend the next 60 days modifying .

Counter point - 7am would be sleeping in by a mile for my group. Who are all these people that think that's 'early' ?!?! Teenagers?

But seriously - the no planning sucks. There's no way around it sucking. But it's sucked for a while at Disneyland and we deal with it there so we'll learn to deal with it at WDW too.
Thankfully we've been multiple times so there's only ever a few new things to 'miss out' on if can't get them- and we know we'll be back. I feel awful for any 'one and done' families that don't have that luxury and need to fit all the 'must dos' in one giant stress ball of a week but I guess if you want a low stress vacation go lay on a beach somewhere and don't try the theme park route?

I mean, why wouldnt you want to get up early while at Disney? Getting a late start is always a bad start and then you wont want to do anything.
Speaking for myself, (a) my body often needs time to recover from the previous day. I have a form of muscular dystrophy and some bad hips - so, allowing time to sleep is helpful (my second day of my last trip - last week - I planned to RD DHS ... until my body kept itself on the bed). And (b) days/times can be unpredictable (for anyone, obviously - but especially so for parents of younger kids). Do I want to be up and doing things? Yes. Is that always an option? No. Some people are naturally night owls; some aren't. The idea that 7am works for everyone - on vacation, every day (not just once like the 60day ADR thing) is sort of nuts.

The lack of planning is more of an issue than the wakeup call. What if you get up for 7am but then aren't able to get any of the rides you want, etc? Your whole day is now messed up and maybe you can change park reservations if you are able.

I don't understand why they are making you plan with the park reservation but then forcing you to be spontaneous on the day of. Or you made your ADR 60 days out and now maybe you will have LL at the same time since you don't get to choose the time slot.

Disney needs to decide. It either wants everyone to plan or be spontaneous. I don't see how both works out well regardless of which one you prefer.

I'm obviously missing something here, as quite a few people have reacted to the initial post with the "love" emoticon.

I'm on vacation. It's up to me to decide when I want to wake up. I don't need "Mother Disney" giving me elementary school flashbacks with wake up alerts. If I want to get up at 7:00, I'll set my alarm. If I want to sleep in a little because I'm tired from the day before or....BECAUSE I'M ON VACATION....that's my decision. What's next, a bugle version of Reveille being blasted through loudspeakers? It's not up to Disney to decide what time I get up on my vacation.

I'm confused about all the Genie hate... you don't HAVE to do it. :confused3 You can still ride rides, watch shows, etc. without it. Don't like it? Don't do it. Disney cares about their bottom line - for better or for worse. They're a business and you can't fault them for making financially beneficial decisions. They owe you NOTHING.

But it's still up to you. You just have a choice to make with certain consequences of that choice, but no one is actually forcing you to wake up early.

That doesn't seem very customer friendly or magical...

I actually don't think that Disney wants to come across that way. It makes people not want to go there.
They're a business. I don't get this. Disney has some of the best customer service I think most people encounter in their lifetime but it's foolish to assume that they're going to ONLY do what is absolutely best for their guests 1000% of the time when financial elements are in play. They DON'T want to come across that way - and they don't. I think most people who don't like Genie+ just choose to not get it. And we all know plenty of people WILL purchase it (myself included), visit Disney, etc.

I just think the whole "I don't like what Disney is doing!" argument is kinda silly. :confused3

If I read about crazy lines due to genie+ being too popular, I plan on booking 2 evening rides that are paid and my first genie+ pass at 11 am, cancel my dining reservation to make up for the price and then go back to sleep.

WHAT?! Next thing you're going to tell me is I don't HAVE to stay up late to use the evening hours just because I'm a deluxe resort guest. I was told Disney was absolutely forcing me to stay up past my bedtime to get on the rides with lower waits!! (Somebody please let me know when this starts to sound silly when you flip it - I can do this all night)

I just think the whole "I don't like what Disney is doing!" argument is kinda silly. :confused3

A fair point in this instance considering that most of what people are saying they don't like - nobody has actually used yet. Gotta filter through the noise. Nobody wants to pay for something that used to be free so filter that out to start, right? While I personally hate that the pre-schedule type FP+ was removed for Genie, there have been many others who wanted it MaxPass style (or worse - no FP at all) on these same threads. This could easily be a vocal minority complaining and Genie actually sells incredibly well and feedback from guests who've actually used it loved it.

Now we have a whole article on not wanting to wake up in the morning and you're right. This particular complaint is ridiculous. And for anyone that just read the post copied here and not the article, it has a picture of a coffee mug with the phrase "I can't even" on it to demonstrate just how much the author can not possibly be expected to select lighting lane options in the morning hours. Feedback need not be constructive I suppose.
