The 2010 Baltic Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

I am on the first Baltic cruise and a gold member. :goodvibes I was able to book excursions this last Saturday. If an excursion had a morning and an afternoon time, I was never able to get the morning slots.:confused3:confused3:confused3 I called DCL when they opened and finally they told me the platinum people had gotten all the morning excursions. :scared1: I am looking to see if Disney will be adding more morning excursions or we will just DIY on most of the ports.

Where in Ga. are you from? We're on the June 12th cruise too. Come join us on the meets thread - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2169793

Andrew-

Had a quick question. We are staying at the Renaissance Chancery, and I have an opportunity via Marriott points to get one day tickets for HOHO River Red Rover on Thames River. Do you know if it's good?

Thanks

I know that we don't have to buy travel insurance from Disney--we can buy it from other companies. But here's my question. If I don't buy Disney's insurance by the paid-in-full date, can I add it a month or so later if I decide I prefer Disney's travel insurance?
I don't know about Disney but I've bought trip insurance the day before we set sail before. I didn't think of asking Disney. The only problem with Disney insurance is that they don't cover airfare (unless you booked through Disney) or any other things outside of the cruise ship like tours that you book and pay for on your own.

Two questions in the same vein:

1. Will Palo brunch fill before Palo dinner?
2. Any sense about how popular spa treatments are and whether those will fill, especially on the days at sea?

Yes because they only have Palo brunch on at sea days but they have dinner every night of the cruise. If you don't get a reservation for it online, stop at Palo desk the first day on boat and they probably will have times they set aside. I had to do this on the last Med. cruise in 2007. I'm not sure about the spa treatments but I have read some people have tried to book a massage online already for 6/12 cruise and could not. I'm sure it is similar where they have saved some time slots. Some things are out of our control so I found go with the flow and it will work out. Good luck.

Okay, a couple of questions.

1. Do you folks think the dcl excursions will fill up right away? Should I be looking at having a second choice? Can you go on a waitlist if your 1st choice is full?

2. Is anybody here going to be booking the Leeds debarkation excursion? I really want to do this, but if its cancelled for lack of interest, I won't have a ride back to London organized. Or if it sells out right away. Anyone hazard a guess as to why you can only book this onboard? I think that'll make people like me worry that it might not happen and therefore make alternate arrangements.

I would love you experienced folks input.

Thanks.

When we went on DCL Med cruise 2007 and some excursions did fill up immediately - usually the best ones - so I would have second choices ready. I had the same experience where I kept checking back every few days and I did get the one excursion I really wanted that had been full. I also could not get the Palo brunch for my size group and had to wait until we got on the boat but we did get one there. March 14 is my booking day for excursions so I'm crossing my fingers this time. Good luck for yours.

Re booking for these Baltic trips I expected and it does seem to be evidenced now that its following the Med 2007 trips with a very high take up for shore excursions.

Now I always expected:-

St Petersburg will sell out very very quickly; Yes some including me have booked private tours, but you cant get off the ship without a DCL tour or a private tour. Private tours are limited and expensive. So DCL shore trips will go fast. STP is the highlight of this cruise with two days there.

Berlin /Warnemunde. This will go fast as well, its expensive, but for many a must do. If you only go to Europe once, or rarely you will want to do it, and unlike other ports, you cant really do it yourself.

So these will book fast.

The other ports as said can go because people want to keep their options open, Bar Signature trips you can cancel up to 72 hours pre cruise, and people know these will sell out, so they will book asap, but may cancel, that gives them options.

MED 2007; Shore trips sold out, a lot went at 105 days, some were added, I know at 90 days many had gone and to support this as you arrivaed in port there were soo many buses lined up for tours, they were popular.

Brunch Dinner Tea etc, is the same as normal, now not, if you get to port early you will get these!!! You do not have a fall back on shore trips bar DIY.

In summary, these Baltic cruises are expensive, of course people are booking them for the sights, if they were booking them for Palo, its a rather expensive way to do it, far cheaper without cruise and air fare, so Shore trips are the priority!!!

HOHO RED ROVER

Never been on one, but see them often as i walk across the Thames river bridges, they are popular all year around i see them reasonably full. You see a lot from the river, and its a nice alternative to walking. All the best sights from Westminster, London Eye, bridges, railways stations, St Paul's, Tower of London, Festival hall, Tate, Globe, are all visible from this as well as going down to Greenwich and docklands for the new 'city' towers.

I, for one, after spending all this money on this cruise, will be very disappointed if when it comes time for us to book our excursions find out that Disney is unable to handle the number of guests wanting to take the excursions.

I'll second that!

I booked on the first day, first thing...I'm spending a fortune ...I'm paying the fuel surcharge and those that booked a month after me aren't...this is my fourth dcl with the 5th one already booked...if I don't get my excursions because the platinum and gold snatched them up, I will be furious! Furious! Not with the the lucky ducks who got them, but with dcl who hasn't anticipated the demand!

I expect that most folks on this cruise are repeat cruisers so that there will be lots and lots of platinum and gold. Silver cc are from the first cruise so I'm worried there will be a system crash with the demand for the bookings that day. I can't devote my entire day to booking as I work!

I hope that I'll get what I want...I'll check back every few days. But honestly, for a loyal cruiser, I would hope that the process isn't going to be a huge disappointment!

Let's not all get ourselves worked up before we know for sure that ALL the excursions are booked solid. "Traveling Tinkerbell" just said (a few posts ago) that all the morning slots were already taken, not that the excursions were completely unavailable. To me, that says Disney anticipated those excursions being popular enough to offer two sessions to accommodate everyone who wanted them. :thumbsup2 I'm pretty confident that Disney will add additional excursions if the demand for them is high enough. We know that DCL is in business to make money, and they surely get a cut from the excursions, so there would be no reason for them to not meet the demand. And, if worse comes to worst and I don't get the excursions we want, then I'll either book private tours or just keep checking with DCL for cancellations. :)

If it makes any of you feel better..I'm not doing any excursions with DCL... so one less family competing for a spot:confused3

I would not panic...I think Deb T is right and DCL will add some more if needed. I would also check back after the date to see what opens up later as well as at the port when you embark.

:grouphug:

The only excursion we will be doing with DCL is 'Berlin on your own', so we won't be hogging your excursions.

That being said, my wife and I made our reservations for the 2007 Med cruise something like two weeks before it sailed. We only missed out on one excursion that we wanted and that was because it was cancelled, not because it was too full.

Finally, I think that it's important to remember that this, while costly, is still supposed to be a vacation. It is best to roll with the little inconveniences. If your favorite excurion is booked, pick a different one or look into outside tour operators. A little googling will show you that pretty much every one of the excursions that Disney is offering is also being offered by private operators. In fact, it's not too difficult to suss out which tour operators are providing the DCL tours if one absolutely 'needed' to get a specific tour.

I would agree to the calls, not to Panic, but have a plan.

The Med in 2007, the shore trips had a high take up and some sold out,

All cruisers booking these four cruises are doing it at high cost for sightseeing, not a 'relaxing' cruise, otherwise would book the Bahamas or Caribbean.

I was told that DCL monitor the 'saved activities' so put what you want into your favorites on each shore trip, this shows them demand and they might be able to add capacity. (At the very least this makes booking shore trips faster as you can toggle to my favorties).

I also think people will book shore trips on spec to give them options but may cancel before the 72 hours cut off.

:thumbsup2

Note

For all care on booking flights home.

Due to tidal issues, debarkation in Dover on July 6th (for the June 24th voyage) will not begin until 10:30am. It is recommended that your flight departure time should be no earlier than 4:00pm.

Guest ashore times and onboard times are subject to change without notice.

Yikes-Where did this come from - what if your flight is before 4pm?

Baltic Sea ice traps passenger and cargo ships

A number of ships, including ferries with thousands of passengers on board, have become stuck in ice in the Baltic Sea, officials say.

The vessels are grounded in the waters between Stockholm and the Aland Islands, Radio Sweden reports.

Many of the vessels are not likely to be freed for hours, Swedish maritime authorities were quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

It is reportedly the worst Baltic freeze for 15 years.

Both Sweden and Finland have deployed ice breakers in the area to help the stranded vessels.

"The ice wouldn't usually be a problem for the merchant ships, the problem now is that it's very windy, about 20 metres per second," Jonas Lindvall, controller of the ice breaking unit at the Swedish maritime authorities, told Radio Sweden.

"That means that the ice is moving rapidly, there are lots of ridges with ice that's making it problematic for the ships, so they need help from the ice breakers," the controller said.

Four Viking Line ferries - which regularly shuttle thousands of passengers between Finland and Sweden - are among the vessels stuck.

Unconfirmed reports say the ferries collided with each other when they tried to manoeuvre in packs of ice.

Doggonit! You beat me to it. I was gonna say the same thing.

I but its a nice 'ice breaker' for a good conversation.

Argh! :-)

OK, on a serious note....from what I can tell, the high temps for the northern capitol cities are gonna be in the upper 60s (in June....might be a little higher in July). So I'm thinking the temps on the water will be 10 degress cooler....meaning there is not going to be a lot of lounging by the pool soaking up the sun on this cruise. The pools will be too cold....the hot tubs will be packed. We might have to read the navigator and find indoor stuff to do on the 4 sea days.

Thoughts on temps while at sea?
