Sitting in the sun. Who does this?? My DH, that's who. Drives me out of my mind that he INSISTS on leaving frozen meat on the counter to thaw. I'm talking about hamburger , hot dogs and pork. Today he left in in the sun. :faint:
I am really careful with handling food-completely grosses me out that he does this....

When we were little, my Mom used to give us mouthfuls of raw ground meat to check the seasoning for her. We *loved* it. It's a wonder we survived. I adored my mother, God rest her soul, but sometimes I think she was a bit psycho.

Got a pork roast thawing now on the counter. Been doing it that way all my life and never had a problem. :confused3

Meh, we do it all the time.

I also like rawhack :thumbsup2

Back in the 70's (before microwaves) my parents would leave raw meat on the counter all day...all night...whenever and cook it whenever they got around to it. Sometimes it would be sitting there for a good day or two and our ground beef burgers were always pink inside and our steak was always cooked medium (didn't know there was a well done option until I grew up).

I leave meat in the sink to thaw each day from 8am until I cook about 4 p m. Not in the sun, but so far so good.

I have heard food network chefs suggest letting meat come to room temperature before cooking.

My MIL does this.

I thaw in the fridge and sometimes in the microwave.

I thaw it on the counter or sink just about everyday. My mother used to do it and I've been living on my own for 21 years and have been doing it ever since.

Never been sick from it yet.

I usually thaw it in the fridge...but have thawed it on the counter plenty of times and survived.

Yeah...no big OP. This is how I and everyone I know defrost meat (and have for 30+ years).

We also thaw meat on the counter. Always have. My parents do it too cause theyre use to it... they only got a microwave a few years ago. Theyre not use to thawing it out in a microwave. Neither of us got sick thawing it on the counter.

My mother did this and I do it. I am 31 and have never gotten sick from food I have prepared myself nor has any of my family.

Same here, except I've been on my own for 22 years.:joker:

I've heard you are supposed to thaw it in the refrigerator. Either that or run cold water on it. If in a hurry use the microwave.

If others say it is safe to thaw on the counter, I am sure it is...I just didn't know it.

I've done it this way for over 44 years. That is how it has always been done in my family - on the counter or in the sink, not in the sun. And I always taste my raw ground beef when making meatballs or meat loaf. Never had a problem, but that is a habit I got from my aunt. Love it. And I always say I prefer my steak or hamburgers still mooing. Sixty six years old and still going strong.

I've done it this was for 30 yrs and I remember growing up with my mom doing it this way. Never got sick from home cooked food. Like I previous poster I also ate raw hamburger in small amounts as a kid.

My DH's father used to eat a 1/2 pound of raw ground beef sprinkled with salt and pepper.

I also have been known to eat raw cookie dough and to lick the bowl after making brownies.
