OMG, I just checked Sprirt for airfare from Atlantic City to Orlando in Oct., are you ready for this, $459.00 rd trp. Are they kidding, I can fly to Europe cheaper than that. I've been checking them for the past few months, and have yet to see any fare that even remotely resembles that of a discount airline.

Spirit's prices have been on a roller-coaster ride lately, soaring to all time highs and then a few days later dropping down -- but hardly to a reasonable area. I'm glad I locked our tickets in several months ago before their "ride" began.

They still offer "cyber-specials" through their newsletter (sign up on their web site). I agree... their advance purchase tickets right now are pretty high for a discount airline. But then fuel prices are driving fares higher across the board.

We can often fly to Europe for less money than to some small city, like Atlantic City. A lot of it seems to do with the amount of traffic between the two cities -- the more traffic, the less money -- with the effect of how far away from each other the two cities are having a lot less impact than one would expect.

For example, from New York to Orlando on Spirit, in October, it is $165 round trip, including all taxes.

For comparision, Atlantic City to Europe in October is over $800! That makes that $459 sound pretty reasonable, eh?

But I've flown on Sprirt out of AC before to other small airports very cheaply, just not the case anymore. As for fuel prices, I can fly AirTran out of Philly for $230. Spirit's finally discovered they're the only game in town in AC, and are just taking full advantage of it, there's tons of competition out of NYC. Delta has one flight to MCO from AC, if you want to fly to Cincinnati first, and a total travel time of about 5 hours.

Yhea, Spirit deafinetly has a monopoly for AC people! There are 8 gates in AC and 7 are Spirit! Im not from NJ, but I often find Flint, MI (Small Airport) to Orlando is cheaper then Detroit, MI (The Mile Long Terminal)

After this weekend, I am done flying SPIRIT, too! They tend to board 45 mintues before departure. While this sounds good, the problem is that they are no longer air conditioning the plane to save fuel costs. I left DTW on Friday when it was in the 90s and we swealtered on that plane. Yesterday the same thing happened on the way home from MCO. We began boarding at 2:25 for a 3:05 flight in 90 degree heat.

Also, they no longer have pillows or blankets. If you want a snack, pull out your credit card because they are now cashless. Even SWA gives out a snack bag of something. Also, SWA have boarding down to an art form.

I will pay extra from now on to fly NWA and SWA over SPIRIT anyday!

My biggest problem with Spirit, and there now begining to fix it, is their MD-80's are EXTREMLY old!! Atleast NWA has remodeled the interior of their DC-9's.

Found out this weekend that roller carry on bags do NOT fit in the old MD-80s! Blech!

And I am also waiting for lower airfares for myself from Detroit to Orlando in October. Usually after the 4th of July holiday the airlines have a fall airfare sale. Unfortunately I need weekend days, which are higher. But I think they will come done in a week or 2. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
