Ok, so strike another thing off the 'Disney To-Do' list. Specifically, this one:
5. Determine which bag I will be using as a carry-on and if no such bag is located or deemed "worthy" of carry-on status, purchase new carry-on bag.
Now, I'm sure there are some men (and shopping-gene-lacking women) out there who are getting all, "ACHK! She's talking about accessories
again?!"
And to you I say, "Yes. Again."
Actually, getting this one right was kind of important to me. I like feeling organized and I like travel to be easy. Otherwise the little stress-bunny in my head gets all sorts of spastic. And yes, I said stress-bunny. It helps keep the hissy-fitting to a minimum to think that the thing in my head that causes me to get all anxious and panicky and sweaty looks like this:
SO, in order to minimize my interaction with the TSA and other local authorities, I made myself a list (again, dedicated to our LL) of qualities my carry-on bag needed:
1. Ease - mostly referring to being carried while strolling along my suitcase and the ability to be shoved under the seat in front of me because I don't want to store my bag overhead. Which meant it really needed to be a backpack. As much as I like messenger bags, I hate wearing them cross-body (it's an issue where that strap cuts when you're big busted) and detest wearing them on one shoulder and then having them sloooooowwwwlllyyyyysliiiiiidddeeedooooooowwwnmyarrrrrm and promptly to the floor. 'Specially when I have something in my other hand. Backpacks make the world a simpler place. Over both shoulders and you're ready to go, both arms/hands free.
2. Comfort - I won't be packing it heavy or using it a ton but I don't want a cheapy-cheapy backpack either, what with the cheap plastic straps. I'm thinking Jansport or Eastpack or something with fairly reliable straps.
3. Versatility - although this will mainly be a carry-on bag, I need it to be able to hold the following*:
a.) my laptop
b.) my small clutch
c.) a couple of magazines and books
d.) my iPod
e.) any fragile souvenirs (on the way home)
*Unfortunately Jack Sparrow had to be removed from the list. I can't figure out how I'm ever going to get him through the TSA scanner thingy.
It doesn't necessarily have to have a designated laptop sleeve as either I'll purchase one separately or have a sweatshirt in there (I know, tres hi-tech).
In addition, I realized that we may need a bag for our pool day, or if our pool day happens to morph into a water park day or if we just so happen to want to bring a bag to the parks to carry and/or stick in a locker.
4. Style - Really? Do you need to ask? It has to be cute. Shallow? Maybe. Sorry.
5. Affordability - since I won't really be getting a ton of use out of the bag after this trip, I don't want to be spending an up wards of $30-$40. Heck. I'd like to pay less than $20 before shipping.
And so the search began.
::cue Mission Impossible music::
I admited MRYPPNS new
Crocs bag, but it struck out because it was a messenger style and I wasn't really into any of their backpacks.
I also considered some of the clearance Disney luggage on both the Disney site and on ebags, but I'm a tad worried about quality.
This guy was briefly in the running for being Jack-emblazoned and for coming with a lunch box:
Alas he is plastic and too small for my laptop.
And then, as I perused ebags some more, I found this little darlin' of a bag and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the print:
(Sorry - I tried but couldn't find a bigger pic.)
You had me at "citrus print".
Add to the fact that it meets all the criteria.
Including #5 as it's on clearance for $19.99 and I have a 20% code for ebags which brings that puppy to $14.99 (about $22 with shipping).
I know, it's white. How long it stays clean will be directly proportional to the number of chocolate ice cream puddles in my proximity, but I'm not concerned. I can throw it in the washing machine if need be.
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! (in best informercial voice)
As an added bonus, I think it's something I'd actually use after the trip, particularly when traveling with my godson. He has a MONSTROUS diaper bag. And now that he's walking, it's awkward to be holding his hand and have the bag over my one shoulder. So this will improve that whole situation.
There's a tiny little part of my brain that is all irked that absolutely NONE of my luggage matches - suitcase, carry-on or wristlet, but honestly, I was so disgusted with that little piece of my brain that I promptly demonstrated how good of a whine-silencer duct tape can be.
I ordered it today and, according to the website, it should arrive no later than 7/16/08. Yippee skippee!
8 down, 6 to go!
