got a baby shower invite. i already know what i'm gifting but i thought i would take a look at the registries to see what mom to be is wanting.

this kid will be VERY safe as a toddler-so long as it does'nt freeze to death in the meantime!

mom has registered for every type of safety item known to man-cabinet/drawer latches, toilet clip, safety gates....great stuff, but realy not necessary until baby gets mobile.

on the other hand, when it comes to clothing :scared1: where we live it gets cold-IT IS COLD NOW (we've been below freezing multiple times in the last week). within a couple of weeks from now we will be in heavy duty cold that hangs on as long as til mid may (we had snow one mother's day).

that said-every item of clothing she's registered for, that the child would conceivably wear during the first 6 months (due in early november) is the lightest weight cotton, short sleeved known to man. the only item that even has leg covering is one lone pair of pj's of the weight that i was hesitant to buy for ds (before he graduated out of kids sizes) because he still got cold wearing them during the summers here. she's not registering for them in sizes that she could conceivably be planning on stashing them away-they are all on the newborn-6 month range, so she must be planning on using them immediatly/throughout the winter.

i sure hope those that go with the registry include the gift receipt, i suspect she will need to do exchanges for warmer items (i can see having a few of these for when the baby is at home in a nice warm house-but the reality is that baby will have to leave the house and there will be lots of nights when some nice warm sleepers will be greatly needed).

when did she register? winter stuf probably wasn't out yet. Just buy her some 3-6 sleepers.

was it at Babies R Us? It's possible that when the mom registered, they didn't have a ton of winter/cold weather clothes to register for. It's hard to register for clothes because the stock is always changing and nothing stays on the racks for very long (excpet basics like onesies etc) I know a lot of moms register very early so maybe that's the case here:confused3

Maybe she plans to become a hermit for the winter, and not really leave the house much at all. If she keeps her house warm enough the baby won't need to bundle up, even at night. And if they cosleep the baby won't need sleepers either.

My ds was born in the middle of a heat wave, and dd was born in October. I had a C with my daughter and so we were home for 3 weeks straight, leaving twice for my doctor's follow ups. She lived in short sleeved onesies. :)

Maybe she's got someone handing her down a bunch of infant/newborn stuff. My family has a rotating box of newborn-gender-neutral stuff that has made the rounds of quite a few babies! :)

She probably just wanted to get the longer lasting, durable items on the registry but included some clothing items for the people who cannot afford to buy the more expensive stuff. And like others have said, the winter clothing probably wasn't out yet.

I know when it came to getting clothing for my kid, people bought so many newborn type items I couldn't use them all before she out grew them. After that It was easier for me to just buy a handful of clothing that fit her right then and were appropriate for the weather.

That being said, there is nothing that says you can't buy a gift that is not on the registry. Buy what you think is appropriate and you can afford.

Honestly, one of the rules of registering for a baby is to NOT include clothes. People always buy clothes, regardless of what's on the registry. Between that and that clothes have such a high turnover, it's considered a waste of time to register for outfits.

I agree that its most likely because of the season when she registered, and because people don't usually register for clothing. That's one of the things it's fun for the gift giver to pick out themselves :)

i understand she only registered in the past couple of weeks, so i don't think availability would be much of an issue.

doubt there's much in the way of hand me downs-first grand/great grand on both sides of the family (and unless someone has stored stuff away, her circle of friends localy does'nt realy include any babies/toddlers at this point).

even if she hermits/co sleeps, i think she will need some warmer stuff. they complain their house is so cold in the winter they pretty much move into the basement to avoid drafts (older, poorly insulated home with leaky windows), but the bathroom is'nt down there nor is the kitchen so for bathing purposes (unless she gonna do a bucket brigade up and down the steps to a portable tub) at minimum there will be temperature issues.

i'm thinking she's just not realizing yet that it's just not practical for her to put layer upon layer of clothing on an infant like she and her dh wear. they are the type that wear a t-shirt, with a henley shirt on top, a pull over sweater on top of that and then a jacket. i think if she tries more than 2 layers with the baby and has a couple of those "special":rotfl: diapering issues where the disposable leaks (or since the newborn will be a boy-the diaper comes off and "the sprinkler starts spraying":rotfl:), and has to take off/launder all that clothing, she will be looking at the heavier weight stuff.

Many mamas swaddle their babies and you don't really want the baby wearing something heavy under a swaddle. Our DD was born in early Feb and spent the first 2 weeks of her life in those little cotton gowns which are not warm by themselves, but she was swaddled or covered by a blanket constantly and she was never cold. Once she decided that she no longer liked being swaddled, we switched to warmer clothes.

ETA - we live in the upper Northeast where it's already gotten into the low 40's some nights and in Feb, it can easily get below 0. DD was still snug & warm as could be in her cotton gowns, swaddles & blankets.

I didn't register for any clothes when DD was born as I had already been pormised by friends that I would get their hand me downs. So I only registered for the big ticket items and still ended up getting over 20 outfits at my baby shower!

I also was a hermit with DD when she was born in November until spring time came. She was in NICU for 2 weeks and was very succeptible to viruses. I rarely left the house and had visitors come to my home rather than take her outside. We maybe left the house 1x a month from Nov - easter. And in that time, she mostly wore a short sleeve onesie everyday as I kept the house at a toasty 76 degrees.

I work at Target and if I see someone pointing a registry gun at the clothing racks I always talk them out if it. That particular item will probably NOT be available when their shower rolls around. It comes in and it goes out and that's it.

Always best to stick with the onesies and blankets and stuff. one thing I've seen in Northern states which my sister was always wanting was a parka type thing you zip over the carrier to keep baby warm. I think those are clever, but we don't have much call for them here. I'm sure when the shower is held she'll wind up with a lot of nice winter clothes for the baby.

She just might not know any better, or maybe that the short sleeve things may have been cuter. Hopefully an experienced mom will stay far away from that, or hopefully buy the kiddo some warmer clothing!

My thoughts exactly. I am due in December and did not register for clothes. People will buy them anyway for the shower as well as gifts when the baby arrives. Plus my mom and I have picked up plenty of outfits on our own too! $$$ Haha.

Hmm. that's exactly what we did. Worked out fine! Boy only ever peed on DH, never on himself (or me), not sure why DH never learned to COVER the area on DS FIRST, but it sure was good for some laughs! Even with a blowout, even with layers, it rarely went beyond the onesie layer. Onesie protected the outer clothes.

But she probably was just going by the "people who bought this also bought this" suggestions that registries give. My friend had the most bizarre registry in the universe, and when I gave her EXACTLY what she had registered for she didn't recognize it (I was the ONLY one at the shower that gave her anything off the registry)...turns out she had just used the registry's suggestions, and didn't really scan much of anything.

She had 3 partial bottle systems, for instance...3. partial.

She had a thousand long-sleeved onesies and very few short-sleeved. She had a TON of patterned stuff, with nothing matching (she's a VERY matchy person, very coordinated), and nothing plain.

She didn't *choose* much of anything, just went with the suggestions! She also had 3 or more stores that she registered for...multiples of the same things from each site....

I also hate when people buy me clothes for the kids.. if I dont like them (even when they are newborns) I wont put them on them.... its best if I just do the picking out of clothes.. yes I am anal about that...
