I made an autograph book for my 5 year old niece. I added the pages to a Word document (2 to a page), then copied the Word document onto a "thumb" drive and took it to Staples to print on their color copies (b'c I thought it would cheaper than using up my expensive color ink). (Staples charged $0.49/page; I had 16 pages @ 8.5x11... 32 signature pages.) Then Staples bound the book in spiral binding, adding a plastic cover to the front and a black heavier stock to the back (that cost $2).

Here's a couple pix of the results! I didn't do the best job of lining up the cover with the rest of the pages so there's a little more white space than I would have liked but... oh well -

Thanks to Michelle for the cover...

I gave it to my niece this evening (they leave on Tuesday). She immediately put down her lollipop to look at it and looked at each and every page with much interest and pointed out all the characters to me with glee - "look there's Jasmine!" It was worth the 8 bucks or so I spent to make it to see her excitement.

... now if only she wasn't afraid of characters! Fortunately, I put every princess I could find in that book because they might be the only autographs she gets this time down! :rotfl2: And, who knows - this just may be the "aid" to help her get over her deadly fright of masked costumes!

SPECIAL THANKS TO MICHELLE AND LUVMY4BRATS for sharing their creative dis-signs here on this thread. You made a little girl squeal in delight and a big girl smile from ear to ear today! You guys ROCK! :dance3:

Hi,
I love the book. I have already saved the images but what do you mean by you saved it to a thumb drive. I plan on printing it out at Staples as well. Do you print it out yourself or give them a disk? Do they cut it for you?
My daughter is going to love it.
Thanks.

A thumb drive is one of those USB sticks you can plug into a computer and transfer files. They are pretty cheap and you can reuse and reuse them. They are basically a portable hard drive , this one is 15.00 and can store 2GB

I didn't print anything, just told them what files to print (actually all of them on the thumb drive as that was the only thing I had on that drive). Basically, I've always called it a flash or "jump" drive but seems like everyone else must call it a "thumb" drive (I guess b'c it's as big as somebody's thumb). Much easier than burning to a disc. You must have a USB port on your pc to use it. Buy the drive, plug it in and your pc should find "new hardware." Then just copy the files to that drive.

Yep they cut it. Basically I didn't think far enough in advance as I dropped 2 pix on a page but should have left more space between the two pix to give more clearance for cutting and therefore creating a longer/higher book. So the guy at Staples had his work cut out for him to cut and line up these pix. He then put the plastic clear cover on the front and the black card stock cover on the back and put it through the spiral binder. He told me why I should choose that one over the other types of binding (which I don't remember the names of right now). This is the one that won't fall out and you can flip each page totally under. I took his advice on all of it!

Thanks for your responses. I will be purchasing a thumb drive. Sounds like it's something I can use in the future anyway. I can't wait to make it. I have to see if I can request a cover from someone and then I'm good to go. Once again, thanks for the great idea!!
